- TSWPompano Beach, Florida234 contributionsAmazing viewsWe took the train from Oslo to Bergen and loved every minute of it. We purchased our first class tickets the day they became available, we were going from Oslo to Bergen to get on a cruise ship so we were also traveling with luggage. We were in the first car with assigned seats, there was plenty of space for our luggage and we were advised that there was also a luggage car available if needed. The ride was so enjoyable and the scenery was amazing. We did arrive over an hour late to Bergen due to a technical difficulty the stopped us but was resolved without incident.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 6, 2024
- wombatdavidHobart, Australia2,816 contributionsInteresting snowy tripWe took the train from Bergen to Oslo in the middle of the day and it took about 7 hours. Much cheaper than rail in UK for example and it ran fine through the snowy day. We paid extra for Pluss seats which was worth it for extra space and hot drinks included. The time passed quickly with all the snow to see.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2024
- Mak GSan Francisco, California74 contributionsLong but BeautifulLovely trip but good god is it long. Solid 7.5-8 hour, full day trip. I recommend bringing snacks and things to do. If the weather is decent, there are amazing sites but be prepared for clouds, rain and snow on parts. Lots of tunnels so service is in and out.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 8, 2024
- Denis QIreland28 contributionsOne Way Sufficient.Wonderful scenery & very comfortable in Comfort Class. Worth taking this train but one way sufficient. Only problem is that we travelled on Constitution Day & on our arrival in Bergen ripped off by taxi. They were charging double because of the holiday!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 22, 2024
- scotty426London, United Kingdom23 contributionsBeautiful train journeyWould highly recommend travelling by train if you need to get from Oslo to Bergen or vice versa, it's got to be one of the most stunning routes in Europe. Booking was very easy via the VY app, the seats are released 90 days in advance so set a reminder if you want to have your pick. We went in Plus class which was worth it for the small amount extra it cost, loads of legroom, a pull out table and free tea and coffee. Loads of space for luggage as well, on the overhead racks or at the end of the carriages. Check carefully when you book as some seats have a restricted view due to the partitions between the windows - you can see these on the app seat plan. We sat on the left going to Bergen and the views seemed a bit better but there is room to move around and a small seating area by the tea/coffee station where you could also sit. The views once you get high up around Finse are amazing. The weather was glorious, blue skies and sun, but that meant it did get a bit hot sitting by the window so suncream and sunglasses are a good idea if the forecast is good! We didn't try the cafe, just brought our own food and drinks. It's a long journey - so take something to pass the time if need be - and for that reason I felt it was a once off and doubt I'd do it again.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2024
- Merleloves2travelSingapore181 contributionsMust do!I was not convinced to do a 8 hour train journey with my 4 year old but decided to do it one way because of the reviews. So we flew 1 way and the other we took the train. We booked in advance to get the low fare and choose the family cabin which also has a small play area. The play area has some books and a climbing structure but very smelly. I don’t think it has been wiped clean but kids played there anyway. As we booked in the family cabin , there lots of kids and they kept each other company in the play area. My kid had a blast and she wanted to ride the train again. Because of this the parents could relax and enjoy the views. The toilets are reasonably clean. There is a cafe onboard and they never run out of food so incase you’re hungry you have a good selection of hot and cold food. But it is very very expensive and you cannot take alcohol outside the cafe. The food is not very nice the Asian noodles was to sour and soggy the meatballs were bearable. Highly recommend the train journey the scenery is indeed very dramatically beautiful.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 4, 2024
- Eeva M1 contributionBergen railway good but avoid Rail NinjaI booked train tickets from Oslo to Bergen and back online, but unfortunately didn't know to avoid Rail Ninja booking site, where I was redirected from VY (Norway's railway company) when the booking was being processed. On the way back it turned out that our seats were reserved for someone else and in fact the personnel couldn't find our reservation at all. The train personnel kindly found us other seats. Also, when we looked into things it turned out that we had also been grossly overcharged for the tickets. Needless to say, we won't use Rail Ninja ever again. My advice is: don't use Rail Ninja! Otherwise the journey between Oslo and Bergen is wonderful and well worth it!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 15, 2024
- TomTempe, Arizona1 contributionThe views are worth it!If going from Oslo to Bergen definitely get a forward facing left side seat in the Pluss cars which cost a little extra. Free coffees, hot choc and tea from an automated espresso machine. Pay attention to the window location (designated on the seat plan). Downside is WiFi didn't work and bathrooms partially (and then fully) out of order in the car we were in. Cafe car is a walk! Views are incredible as you gain elevation. Scandinavia has weird alcohol laws (you can only consume alcohol you buy in the cafe car, can't take it back to your seat) so pre package some drinks in clandestine to-go containers if you want.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 19, 2024
- Mansel_11Durham, United Kingdom117 contributionsBucket list travelVery interesting train journey . We had good seats although we had asked our travel agent to book first class they forgot or were too late. The steps up are quite steep and it is a long journey. Very brief stops so no opportunity to stretch legs although my husband did wave at the web cam at Finse. No wifi on that day but rally no need as there was plenty to see and photo opportunities. There were many tunnels towards Bergen. I’m not sure about the sleeping compartments as they were booked mainly by families with children but the toilets were sealed up on that trip and I would not have enjoyed carting a small child through the train to find a working one in the night. I enjoyed seeing the outdoor temperatures on the screen as we passed through each station. They also displayed the height above sea level on the screen which was interesting.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 6, 2024

The train was comfortable, even in economy. At first, the views are of Sweden and generally flat and pastoral with lots of lakes and fields and woods. The closer you get to Norway the more dramatic the mountains become until you finish seeing rivers gushing down mountains sides and snow-capped peaks.
A pleasant 7 hour journey with some café options available and lots of stops to pick up and drop off at smaller stations on the way.
I wish I had bought my ticket directly from Norwegian Railways, rather than from Ninja Rail because it would’ve cost half the price and I would’ve had a seniors discount option. I think we had the most expensive economy tickets on the train.
So, I repeat buy tickets from vy. no. This was strongly recommended to me by the Norwegian railways representative at Oslo station who said that they had a repeated experience of people buying over-priced tickets from agencies (see above).

This fabulous trip was hugely hugely enjoyable.
We unfortunately booked with Rail Ninja. They overcharged and did not inform us of available discounts. At the train station we learned that the cost was much cheaper. Rail Ninja had sold us the ticket as refundable, but when we requested a refund they kept a service charge that was a large portion of the cost. Amazingly, it was still worth cancelling and buying new tickets at the station. We still came out ahead. Rail Ninja is an unethical rip off

There is no exaggerating when people say this railway is among the most beautiful in Europe. We were very excited to see the beautiful landscape and could not take enough photos and make enough videos. During the entire trip we wished we could get off at every station and just go for a hike in that beautiful region and stay for a week admiring the peaceful landscapes.
Our train departed 40 minutes after the scheduled time from Bergen (I read this happens all the time) but afterwards we did not have any more problems on the road.
We booked seats in the family car but I have to say that, our youngest being 6 years old, we kind of outgrew this space and the advantages we got were small compared to having to listen to babies crying all the way. If you travel with kids below 5 who cannot sit for hours, then it is still a good idea to chose the section reserved for families.
The food on the train is quite tasty but it cost more if you want to eat it in the restaurant versus if you take the food with you to your seat. As most people do the latter, there is always a table available at the restaurant. We took advantage of this and had a peaceful hour with our lunch.
This is an amazing ride, I do recommend to try it, even though the plane is many times faster, the view is worth spending your day on a train.

Scenery amazing with snow everywhere. Saw cross country skiers, gliders, horses, even huskies. About halfway through we had to wear sunglasses as so glary with the snow. It's good that they have a screen that tells you the outdoor temperature. Plus seats are possibly worth paying for just for the extra space (definitely not for the coffee/tea!).
But train is a bit of a joke:
1) Had engine failure about halfway through when we were very remote and surrounded by snow. I was wondering how we were going to get out of this. Toilets and water didn't work during this time. After about 1/2 hour we got going again though.
2) Couldn't log into internet and we were told by a train employee it was 'broken for the day'.
3) Cups ran out in the coffee/tea area for "Plus" seats.
4) Man serving in cafe spoke rudely to customers.
The cabin was stuffy and unfortunately we had a lady in our cabin coughing quite violently the whole way (with no mask gosh some people are selfish).
I don't think it's worth the money you pay but it is nice to see the scenery. Which side to sit on? Definitely the left hand (heading to Bergen)!

We went from Oslo to Bergen and I can assure you the views are spectacular! To get the best views I recommend sitting on the left side. We bought the Vacation Package Norway in a Nutshell. Initially we were lost inside the train pq we had no seat marked and every time we had to get up to give place to someone who was in the chair we were sitting on. Luckily the person who was passing to check the tickets put us in a wonderful and quiet place in the family area. I found the other areas very noisy and tighter. The journey itself is wonderful and the scenery stunning. Super recommend with seat marking in a good place

Spectacular views of fjords and mountains as you travel between Bergen and Oslo. Trip takes 6 hrs but seats are comfortable on modern trains. We paid for upgrade to Plus (relatively small cost) - allows swap of seats to get best views plus comfy seats and free coffee / hot drinks.
Book does text with VY.no .. don’t go through booking agents - seats released approx 1 month in advance of travel but can buy on day (for more ££)
Watch as the scenery changes as you travel through Norway ..

I saw this train journey on TV during lock down and put this onto my bucket list.
I am so glad i did it as the scenery was incredible.
The weather was very good in early March i.e. mostly blue skies, which must make a big difference.
I pre-booked my ticket a few weeks before, and i am glad i did as nearer the time the price doubled / tripled.
My journey started in Oslo and after about 20 minutes, the City faded away and the countryside became more dominant.
The train was soon passing rivers, lakes, hills and lovely vistas.
For the first hour / last hour of the journey, the right side was the better side for the views, but the best views are (in my opinion) on the left side.
The cafe car served average coffee, cakes and hotdogs. It was okay.
The seats without exception were great, with plenty of legroom. The configuration was 2 seats to the left and 2 to the right.
After a few hours, the train climbed up to the highest points of the journey. This was the most spectacular part of the journey. There were a few stops in villages where there were lots of skiers getting on and off the train.
The Flam train was waiting at Voss (i think) and i now wished i'd bought a ticket to catch that train. If i was to return to Norway, i would fly to Bergen (skip out Oslo) and get the train to Voss and catch the Flam train.
After Voss, the train descended slowly and began it's approach to Bergen, which was still about 2 hours away.
The scenery was still amazing as it passed the Fjords to the right of the train.
Eventually, the journey ended in Bergen after about 7 hours.
It was the best train journey of my life and i am glad i took so many photos / videos to remember it forever!

We booked Pluss tickets from Oslo to Bergen, which seemed like a good choice until we reached Voss. The train journey itself was comfortable, although there weren’t really many advantages with staying in the Pluss car, apart from the free coffees and teas. I wanted seats on the left side and thought I had reserved them during booking but the diagram on their website proved to be exactly the opposite, which was very frustrating.
Although the train ride was very long (a little over 5 hours), the scenery along the way is spectacular. This is definitely a must when traveling from Oslo to Bergen. Unfortunately, the Bergen station was under renovation so we had to disembark at Voss to take a replacement bus. Now, this was then the NIGHTMARE began.
We traveled on a Sunday so the train, as expected, was packed. When we arrived at Voss, there were no instructions on where to find the replacement buses. We had to navigate our way through a sea of frustrated travelers who were as confused as we were. When we finally found one, we had to battle our way to get our suitcases loaded on to the bus, only to be told by the bus driver that he wasn’t going to Bergen and that we needed to get off and unload our luggage. Turns out that the bus driver was lying and was only being selective of who he wanted on his bus.
And what’s worse: there were not enough buses to accommodate all the train passengers. Nearly half of us had to wait for another hour and a half for ONE bus that everyone had to fight over. Thankfully, one of the VY supervisors, Lorena, was so kind to help us get on it. She also promised to report the bus driver that we previously had issues with.
This is definitely a train journey worth experiencing. However, don’t do it if the Bergen station is closed and if the journey involves getting on a replacement bus!

Having heard such good things about the Bergensbanen I used it today to travel from Oslo to Bergen.
The fare was reasonable, probably a little cheaper than flying when booked in advance.
The journey takes around 7 hours which went fairly quickly.
The views are good but I wouldn't say they're some of the best in the world.
Staff on board were very nice, the cafe sold a good selection of items are reasonable prices. Unfortunately the WiFi wasn't working.
I'm glad I took the train for the experience and to tick it off my bucket list, but I think I'll fly if I need to make the journey in future.

If you have the time to cover this distance by train (about six hours), the train ride between Bergen and Oslo is a must. Spectacular views of varied landscapes, you'll go high up into the mountains and down into lush river valleys and along fjords, and you'll see all kinds of pittoresque towns and villages along the way. I've always known the trains on the Bergen Line to be spotlessly clean and well-maintained, the only drawback is that the rail service has some ageing infrastructure, so minor (or not so minor) delays are unfortunately pretty frequent, so take that into account when planning your trip.

I will be in Bergen for the hurtingruten cruise Nov 13. Not sure what time we 'need' to be at the cruise terminal, but would like to do a day tour from Bergen to Myrdal. We've (my sister, brother in law, and myself) have looked at Viator tours. We would like to see Flam and the surrounding area, and would also like to do the train from Flam to Myrdal but just do a round about if possible, because of time. Would you suggest renting a car and do this trip, or do one of the self guided tours? With time wise, we need to take that into consideration. "IF" we do it on our own, how do we get the cruise at Naeroyjford or is it Aurlandsfjord, and then the train to Myrdal and back. Thank you in advance for any help. I sincerely appreciate it. I am also looking for a cabin mate from Bergen to kirkenes....any female interested would be so appreciated. Thank you

Has anyone travelled in a compartment from Bergen to Oslo?
We are a family of 5 adults and a 6-yr-old. Are the seats in a passenger car more comfortable?

Hi
We travelled in regular passenger seats and were very comfortable. We were three --my old self and my two adult children. I cannot comment on the compartments.

I am going from Bergen to Oslo in March and planning to use rail. Is it possible and advisable to make a detour to the FLAM railroad on the way? Is it as simple as getting a ticket from Bergen to Flam (with a change in Myrdal) and then another from Flan to Oslo? Can it be done reasonably on one day? Is there much to do in Flan or is the rail ride itself the highlight of the trip?
Written November 25, 2023
hi, sorry for tle reply. the trip itself is a highlight, i think you can stop and do the flam railway, however you will need to stay overnight. Well worht the trip. Alternatively you can gop all the way to Bergen and from there go to Myradall Flam.
Enjoy you r trip
