Late Opening is a GEM. Highly Recommend!
Late opening in this museum is an absolute gem. We went at around 7pm (I think it closed at 9pm?) the place may as well have been deserted. Lots of staff on hand to assist if you needed anything, but felt like we had the place to ourselves. Walked right up to the scream, was about 3 other people in the room. Probably the best museum experience we've had so far, usually in these places the 'spotlight' pieces have a huge crowd of people and you can't actually see them. Can't recommend the late opening enough.

Incredible Museum - Great Artificats - Fine Art - Abundant History of Norway and the World
The National Museum is a HUGE museum with artifacts dating back to BC. Surprisingly detailed with exhibits from every period of history. Extensive exhibits of sculptures, artwork, artifacts, design, technology, and more! The first floor is in chronological order, with some incredible pieces of history. the second- floor features fine art from local artists as well as lots of art from world renowned artists. Here you will find the best copy of the Scream. A bit surprising to find this in the National Museum rather than the Munch Museum (where they house several other versions of the Scream). Room after room after room of fine art is on display. You can easily get lost, so be sure to grab a map to navigate throughout the rooms. The staff is very, very friendly and helpful. Without any prompting, they approached me and offered assistance with finding what I would most enjoy seeing and then personally escorted me to that room. I was really surprised, especially because I was speaking English to another visitor at the museum and an English-speaking staff member offered assistance, again, with no prompting from me. One word of warning, there are yellow "tracks" about 3 feet from the walls in the exhibit rooms and if you accidentally step on or over these tracks, you will set off a silent alarm. While it is rather obvious once you notice the tracks, there are no signs or warnings that you may be setting off the alarms. Of course, I managed to set them off a few times until I was clearly told to stay behind the lines. I actually prefer these tracks on the floor over the usual metal stanchions and ropes, but you just have to remember they are there, or you'll be greeted by security. If you are in Norway and have an opportunity to visit this museum, you must visit to get a feel for local Norway and the influence it has had on the entire world. If you really want to dig into the exhibits, allow more than 3 hours visiting time. Time will fly by, and you'll be glad you took the time to see it all.

    Showcasing Norwegian Artists and More
This museum which only opened recently is quite large so unless you plan to spend the entire day there, it is best to study the brochure you are given and come up with a plan. We had several hours so that was enough to see the entire first floor (which showcases the oldest exhibits) and the highlights of the second floor. The rooms are numbered well so it is easy to keep track of where you are at. Keep in mind that this is the National Museum of Norway so you will find numerous rooms featuring Norwegian artists. Photos are allowed without a flash so that is nice. Free wifi is available, and there is an app that can be downloaded with audio tours, but you will need to bring you own earbuds or headphones if you want to experience them.

Consolidated Museum Encompassing a Broad Landscape of Norwegian Culture
Finally, the Norse gods must've smiled upon my husband and me because we were in Oslo just in time to visit Norway's new national museum. Just opened in June after a decade of construction, it's a mammoth, windowless gray slate building next to Aker Brygge near the harbor. it merged four existing institutions into one building: the National Gallery, the Museum of Architecture, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. No wonder there was a lot of furniture on display. The result was pretty overwhelming with over 6,500 objects in 87 separate galleries. It's divided into two floors covering over 140,000 square feet. The first floor was organized into themes grouped by discrete periods in Norwegian history. I suppose that was why there were so many costumes and decorative items on display. The second floor was focused on paintings spanning six centuries. There were not just Norwegian artists represented but the likes of Rodin, Picasso, and Monet. There was also an intriguing section of contemporary art with a particular emphasis on multimedia. The museum amounts to the Norwegian equivalent of the Smithsonian. Admission is 180 NOK ($18.35).

Not enough toilets but a good, diverse selection of art periods and genres.
I agree with other reviews - the quality of Munch artwork here was far better than at the museum dedicated to Munch. It’s probably better I went here after the Munch museum, otherwise I think I’d have ended up even more disappointed with wall to wall inferior artwork (but that’s for another review). This is another museum I wanted to give 5 stars, because it had an excellent selection of artwork on display, even if it wasn’t all to my taste. However, why so few toilets? Even the men were queueing. There weren’t enough toilets (I could only find two ladies’ toilets on each floor) and they weren’t spread out enough, located only very centrally in the building, which is disappointing and odd for such a modern museum. (Let’s not forget the size of the cafes - all that coffee and cake needs to be digested and then…… well, you get my point). On the plus side, I did get to practice my Norwegian with a nearly seven year old girl in the queue. So it wasn’t a TOTAL waste of my time queueing…… I particularly enjoyed all the classical heads on displays. It had a few Greek pots as well, and some nice dresses re the Royal Family. I also had to stop myself from boogeying when A-ha’s Take on Me blasted out from one of the exhibits towards the end. So basically, something for everyone. It really does cover a lot of different eras and genres and I could have spent far longer than I did here (sore feet let me down). Definitely one to go back to if I’m ever back in Oslo.

  • Awful experience
Rude and extremely impolite security personnel. Of course you weren’t allowed to cross the line in front of the paintings, but your head couldn’t also cross it in order to read the painting label!!! ! The guard told me to take a picture of it to read it afterwards!! Also, our kid was told off twice for making too much noise playing with the wooden blocks THEY provide in the exhibition museum. Awful experience.

    Stunning new museum
The new Nasjonalmuseet was still being built last time I visited, now open it was worth the wait and a truly stunning museum. Staff are excellent and welcoming and the visitor journey through the exhibits is well planned. Exhibitions are light and well spaced, signage and interpretation unobtrusive yet informative. The roof terrace gives great views over Oslofjord and the cafe well worth a visit.

    Large + Very Good
You can easily spend a full day here. The second floor is devoted to art while the first floor covers a wide variety of things including fashion, modern design, furniture, porcelain, etc. We spent most of our time on the 2nd floor where they have 3 rooms devoted to Munch, including The Scream. We were very impressed with the museum and enjoyed our visit. Hope to return so we can more time on the 1st floor.

Excellent Norwegian Art Collection--A Must See
Impressive collection of art, for the most part Norwegian art, housed in a stunning museum. There is a collection of dresses or other outfits worn by "celebrities," ranging prior queens of Norway to Kim Kardashian. Then there are exhibits depicting a Norwegian home in various periods of time. Most impressive is the collection of paintings, mostly Norwegian artists, on the second floor. The works on display are familiar to those who are familiar with Norwegian art, and will be an eye-opener to those who are not familiar with Norwegian artists. The second floor is well laid-out. On the third level are exhibitions by contemporary artists. All in all an impressive and memorable experience.

Fantastic exhibitions: huge selection to see!
We went here primarily to see Edvard Munch’s The Scream, but were delightfully pleased by a frankly huge lot of exhibitions on Floor 1 and 2. (Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to access Floor 3.) There are family and child-friendly activities, such as drawing/colouring sheets set out on some tables, and wooden puzzles on others. I truly believe there is something here for everyone to enjoy. To note: security requires you to place any bag larger than a small handbag or bum bag/fanny pack in a locker alongside your coat or jacket. These lockers are free and require you to set a code of your choosing. We took a picture of our pair of lockers to remember their numbers - as there are many of them - which was recommended by the security guards present.

If you have a couple of hours to kill, I would check this museum out. Beyond the Scream painting, they have some very nice Norwegian artists and impressionists. I found that I quickly breezed through the museum, as some of the art was pretty typical of work I've seen in many other places. The costume and modern scan design section was interesting. The other "modern art" though was really weird. Not my cup of tea. Minus one star for very expensive entry (around $18 USD)!

Amazingly curated and designed. I spent hours here. I actually had to come back a second time because I spent so much time the first time I ran out of time. The museum has great opening hours making it more flexible for people who get off work late. They are still moving artwork from the old museum so it will only get better.

Museum located on Quayside. Fantastic piece of architecture with galleries spread over a few floors. Entrance fee payable. Excellent restaurant on ground floor linked to Museum as well as a good separate cafe inside the museum. No bags or rucksacks allowed inside but free lockers and cloakroom as well as restrooms in the basement. Museum very well organised for visitors. Galleries are very modern and superbly displayed. This is an enormous/impressive collection of art covering a huge range of themes/artists/forms. Highly recommended for a visit.
