Oslo is a quiet city and sometimes you feel more like being in a small town rather than an European capital city. Karl Johans gate is an exception. It is a comercial street full of life, shops and restaurants.

This is actually an avenue. We stayed in the Grand Hotel and had a great view over the Karl Johans gate. Also a great department store, restaurants and museums are nearby.

I would say this is a main street for tourists visiting Oslo. You can walk all the way from Oslo S to The Royal Palace. You can do some shopping, listen to street musicians or you can grab a snack somewhere on a restaurant. Don't forget to stop by the Freia store, it's located near TIGF, buy yourself some delicious... Lots to see that gives you a cultural feel. A few panhandlers were annoying but overall it felt safe. Lots of shops and restaurants.

Not being a shopper myself, Karl Johans Gate was nothing more than a stroll down a long street. There are a few eateries along the way, as well, but mostly overpriced stores, many of which can be found in the US or other large city. There are a few street vendors, mostly selling pictures. It is a pity that it is a wee bit of a building site in places at the minute, or I suspect we would have enjoyed this street even more. Nice selection of things to see - range of shops, historic buildings, open spaces. Looked good on a crisp, winter's day.

If you want to do some shopping in Oslo then this is the street to be. There are multiple indoor shopping centers along the way. At the end you will find the Hard Rock cafe.
