Tromso is promoted as a good place to see the Northern Lights. The second night we were there we did a very expensive Northern Lights tour. Saw nothing. Drove around all night but was too cloudy. Fair enough we understand you can be unlucky. The problem was the company knew the cloud was too thick to see anything and still they took our money and made a show of driving around pretending to look for the lights.
If you want to see the Northern Lights dont go to Tromso. Its not tourist friendly, signage/parking impossible to understand and the city fines you even when there are no signs saying dont park. We had a Hertz rental car and they did not explain any of the traffic regulations, avoid this rental company. The footpaths across the city are covered in ice and we saw many fall and hurt themselves badly.
Avoid Tromso, go to Iceland. We saw the Northern Lights on the first night and the people are much more friendly.

We used the Tourist Information office on 3 occasions. You need to take a ticket and on the odd occasion you may have to wait a while but that is because they provide such a good informative service. We used them for advice on bus routes and available excursions and they were wonderful. No query was too much trouble and as much depth as required was provided, all in typical Norwegian friendliness, politeness and good humour. Great service.

I deserve this fine! However, the hotel failed to fulfill its responsibility to inform passengers who were new to an unfamiliar environment. I couldn’t calm down my anger! On 20.10.23, I parked my car in front of the Scandic Grand Tromso Hotel and prepared to check in. The receptionist clearly saw my car parked in front of the hotel (5 meters away). The receptionist only informed the nearby public parking lot of the location and did not warn the hotel guests - "No parking in front of the hotel." Within 5 to 10 minutes, I got a ticket of 900 Norwegian dollars. When I turned around to complain to the teller, he insisted that they were only responsible for what happened inside the hotel and not outside the hotel. In the cold wind of about 0°C, I agreed that the ticket was not unjust, but I could only get angry like a dog barking at a train.

Make sure you visit this Tourist information centre, so very friendly and helpful. Plenty of free leaflets and guides around, staff on hand to help. Bookings can be made here for lots of different winter experiences, or just for advice. Remember to take a number as you go in, to be seen. Toilets available in the complex.

Good clothing section although you’ll be trying the clothes in their storage cupboard. There were plenty of Norwegian hats, mittens (as you’re supposed to wear gloves with fingerless mittens over the top) down jackets and trekking trousers.

Very limited tours; for the Northern lights there was a choice of the Big bus tour or the smaller version, both of which I’d reviewed and discounted. I was hoping to book all ten of my tours with them but went away with none booked so I’m going to book those direct.

They have bag storage if you have to check out of your hotel but your flight is later.

Thank you for the review! We have many providers, but the availability might vary, depending on the number of visitors as well as the weather and the season. If you have questions on how to prepare for your next trip to Tromsø, send us an email at info@visittromso.no. You can check out the tours of all our partners at our website visittromso.no, and it's also possible to book through our website. Sometimes it's better to book on beforehand, although it's not possible to know the weather forecast a long time in advance. If you stop by our reception, we can book tours for you, taking your needs and wants in consideration, but of course sometimes tours might be booked out. You can cancel your tours up until 48 hours in advance, so it is possible to book and plan on beforehand, yet make changes some days before if there is enough availability.

The centre has some good information on trips, however it may be a little biased as on the computers they have there are only a select few. Unfortunately we waited for over 30 minutes and the queue to speak with someone hadn't moved at all so in the end we gave up. I think there needs to be a few more staff or at least a counter to answer quick questions for people not looking to book anything. They do have a nice selection of art/gifts.

Luckily Tromso is not the only place to view the northern lights. And let's face it, without the northern lights, Tromso would be another loser city full of losers. Nothing else to recommend for visiting. Everyone here has their hand out for every service. Our airbnb host was incredibly cheap and chinzy with the apartment we rented. It was horrible. The upstairs neighbor was so loud 24/7. The airline lost my friend's luggage and we had to wait more than 48 hours for a delivery after countless hours on the phone and internet. I know Tromso is not at the center of great cuisine so I was prepared for not eating well. There's so much more to tell but my fingers are getting cramped. Plus the upstairs neighbor is continuing to vacuum over the same spot for the last 25 min. I would never visit Tromso again. If you want to see the northern lights go elsewhere.

When I found myself trying to make a last minute booking to chase the northern lights, the staff here were amazingly friendly and informative. They not only checked the weather to see if the odds would be good that night but they helped me arrange an amazing trip with the Discover Tromso aurora base camp adventure. If you need advice I would highly recommend a stop here to plan your stay in Tromso. They also had information on all the other excursions such as reindeer feeding and snowmobiling and could book on site.

We couldn’t find it at first, it’s not very well signposted and even google maps didn’t have a clue. It’s upstairs by the cruise terminal I think. There’s a ticket system in place but only 3 staff on and everyone booking tours. We only wanted to buy a polar certificate but had to wait about 30 mins.
