Modern and well equipped in the centre of Tromsø, the tourist information office is located on the first floor of the city centre port terminal. The staff are excellent and extremely helpful. Part of the complex has private excursion operators in addition to the normal facilities. Be advised to obtain a queue ticket (similar to a supermarket deli counter ticket) as there is normally a long queue for an agent, especially when cruise ships are in port. This is also applicable for purchases as well as questions. Furthermore, the staff were very prompt in replying to an email question.

In the Harbour building where you also may book tours on bus or vessels (Hurtigruten). Bus station on the ground floor.
Also several tour operators and shops to found there.
Free city map and other interesting material.

We used the Tourist Information office on 3 occasions. You need to take a ticket and on the odd occasion you may have to wait a while but that is because they provide such a good informative service. We used them for advice on bus routes and available excursions and they were wonderful. No query was too much trouble and as much depth as required was provided, all in typical Norwegian friendliness, politeness and good humour. Great service.

Tromso is promoted as a good place to see the Northern Lights. The second night we were there we did a very expensive Northern Lights tour. Saw nothing. Drove around all night but was too cloudy. Fair enough we understand you can be unlucky. The problem was the company knew the cloud was too thick to see anything and still they took our money and made a show of driving around pretending to look for the lights.
If you want to see the Northern Lights dont go to Tromso. Its not tourist friendly, signage/parking impossible to understand and the city fines you even when there are no signs saying dont park. We had a Hertz rental car and they did not explain any of the traffic regulations, avoid this rental company. The footpaths across the city are covered in ice and we saw many fall and hurt themselves badly.
Avoid Tromso, go to Iceland. We saw the Northern Lights on the first night and the people are much more friendly.

Make sure you visit this Tourist information centre, so very friendly and helpful. Plenty of free leaflets and guides around, staff on hand to help. Bookings can be made here for lots of different winter experiences, or just for advice. Remember to take a number as you go in, to be seen. Toilets available in the complex.

When I found myself trying to make a last minute booking to chase the northern lights, the staff here were amazingly friendly and informative. They not only checked the weather to see if the odds would be good that night but they helped me arrange an amazing trip with the Discover Tromso aurora base camp adventure. If you need advice I would highly recommend a stop here to plan your stay in Tromso. They also had information on all the other excursions such as reindeer feeding and snowmobiling and could book on site.

Don’t visit this city at all. They make all their money off of parking tickets. We had two four hr excursions, two separate days, paid for parking both times, and had a tickets when we returned. One was by 2 minutes and the other 8. Yes I understand that we were late but I also understand that 80 usd is way too much per ticket. I believe they are ruining their tourist attraction and it’s bad for their Economy when the whole towns pay is based on tourist activity. The people at the parking enforcement office are a joke. I never wanted to be mean to someone so bad in my life. I wouldn’t come back here if you paid for my trip. The place is over priced and over rated.

Tromso is a joke. All of it.

Very helpful by email : prompt replies with recommended options on dog sledging and snowshoeing. I took my parents (80+yrs) so appreciated the guidance in advance. Thank you. We loved our first Trip to Tromsø and will absolutely return.
