Tromso is promoted as a good place to see the Northern Lights. The second night we were there we did a very expensive Northern Lights tour. Saw nothing. Drove around all night but was too cloudy. Fair enough we understand you can be unlucky. The problem was the company knew the cloud was too thick to see anything and still they took our money and made a show of driving around pretending to look for the lights.
If you want to see the Northern Lights dont go to Tromso. Its not tourist friendly, signage/parking impossible to understand and the city fines you even when there are no signs saying dont park. We had a Hertz rental car and they did not explain any of the traffic regulations, avoid this rental company. The footpaths across the city are covered in ice and we saw many fall and hurt themselves badly.
Avoid Tromso, go to Iceland. We saw the Northern Lights on the first night and the people are much more friendly.

We used the Tourist Information office on 3 occasions. You need to take a ticket and on the odd occasion you may have to wait a while but that is because they provide such a good informative service. We used them for advice on bus routes and available excursions and they were wonderful. No query was too much trouble and as much depth as required was provided, all in typical Norwegian friendliness, politeness and good humour. Great service.

I deserve this fine! However, the hotel failed to fulfill its responsibility to inform passengers who were new to an unfamiliar environment. I couldn’t calm down my anger! On 20.10.23, I parked my car in front of the Scandic Grand Tromso Hotel and prepared to check in. The receptionist clearly saw my car parked in front of the hotel (5 meters away). The receptionist only informed the nearby public parking lot of the location and did not warn the hotel guests - "No parking in front of the hotel." Within 5 to 10 minutes, I got a ticket of 900 Norwegian dollars. When I turned around to complain to the teller, he insisted that they were only responsible for what happened inside the hotel and not outside the hotel. In the cold wind of about 0°C, I agreed that the ticket was not unjust, but I could only get angry like a dog barking at a train.

Make sure you visit this Tourist information centre, so very friendly and helpful. Plenty of free leaflets and guides around, staff on hand to help. Bookings can be made here for lots of different winter experiences, or just for advice. Remember to take a number as you go in, to be seen. Toilets available in the complex.

Good clothing section although you’ll be trying the clothes in their storage cupboard. There were plenty of Norwegian hats, mittens (as you’re supposed to wear gloves with fingerless mittens over the top) down jackets and trekking trousers.
Very limited tours; for the Northern lights there was a choice of the Big bus tour or the smaller version, both of which I’d reviewed and discounted. I was hoping to book all ten of my tours with them but went away with none booked so I’m going to book those direct.
They have bag storage if you have to check out of your hotel but your flight is later.

Thank you for the review! We have many providers, but the availability might vary, depending on the number of visitors as well as the weather and the season. If you have questions on how to prepare for your next trip to Tromsø, send us an email at info@visittromso.no. You can check out the tours of all our partners at our website visittromso.no, and it's also possible to book through our website. Sometimes it's better to book on beforehand, although it's not possible to know the weather forecast a long time in advance. If you stop by our reception, we can book tours for you, taking your needs and wants in consideration, but of course sometimes tours might be booked out. You can cancel your tours up until 48 hours in advance, so it is possible to book and plan on beforehand, yet make changes some days before if there is enough availability.

The centre has some good information on trips, however it may be a little biased as on the computers they have there are only a select few. Unfortunately we waited for over 30 minutes and the queue to speak with someone hadn't moved at all so in the end we gave up. I think there needs to be a few more staff or at least a counter to answer quick questions for people not looking to book anything. They do have a nice selection of art/gifts.

Luckily Tromso is not the only place to view the northern lights. And let's face it, without the northern lights, Tromso would be another loser city full of losers. Nothing else to recommend for visiting. Everyone here has their hand out for every service. Our airbnb host was incredibly cheap and chinzy with the apartment we rented. It was horrible. The upstairs neighbor was so loud 24/7. The airline lost my friend's luggage and we had to wait more than 48 hours for a delivery after countless hours on the phone and internet. I know Tromso is not at the center of great cuisine so I was prepared for not eating well. There's so much more to tell but my fingers are getting cramped. Plus the upstairs neighbor is continuing to vacuum over the same spot for the last 25 min. I would never visit Tromso again. If you want to see the northern lights go elsewhere.

When I found myself trying to make a last minute booking to chase the northern lights, the staff here were amazingly friendly and informative. They not only checked the weather to see if the odds would be good that night but they helped me arrange an amazing trip with the Discover Tromso aurora base camp adventure. If you need advice I would highly recommend a stop here to plan your stay in Tromso. They also had information on all the other excursions such as reindeer feeding and snowmobiling and could book on site.

We couldn’t find it at first, it’s not very well signposted and even google maps didn’t have a clue. It’s upstairs by the cruise terminal I think. There’s a ticket system in place but only 3 staff on and everyone booking tours. We only wanted to buy a polar certificate but had to wait about 30 mins.

We are going to Tromso at the end of March 2019. We are staying about 20 mins (bus ride) from the centre. We are hoping to see the Northern Lights from where we are staying but if not can you recommend a tour to see the lights. I'm trying to fulfil the bucket wish list for mum and mother in law. Also, are there lots of steps at the cable car as we will be taking to older ladies. Thanks in advance .

Hello Mandy.
the Visit Tromso website is really great for booking trips in advance or you can wait until you go to the tourist infirmation centre in Tromso harbour. Be prepared to spend time waiting your turn there. The cable car trip is wonderful. Very snowy and some icy patches up there. All accessible though and well worth it.
So many companies do Northern Lights chases. We went with Greenlander ( see reviews ) and really felt safe as Markus was a superb driver and knows the best spots to head for. Companies like Pukka Travels get good reviews for minibus tours. Someone answered your question and mentioned Mansoor. We went out with him in the day...Amazing Arctic Landscape tour listed on Visit Tromso site. Spectacular views of fjords, authentic settlements and wildlife including sea eagles and wild reindeer. Have fun.

me n my wife booked flight n hotel at tromso city centre
...do we have to go somewhere else to see "midnight sun"?
Written January 18, 2019
There are amazing tours from Tromso that take you out into the countryside to experience the midnight sun in nature, but if you take the cable car to the top of the city you should have great views, too!

Hi. We are planning to travel to Norway around 25th May 2019 for 10 days. Can we expect to see whales and Northern lights around Tromso?
Written November 25, 2018
Hi, best time to see the Northern lights in Norway is October - March so I think you may miss them as for the Whales October - January so again you may miss them. Norway is an amazing place & Tromso is beautiful so even if you don't see both there is plenty more to do and see just go enjoy.

I tried calling the tourist information centre but the phone disconndects after presing option 1 for English. Would like to know if there is any bus/ coach going go to the north cape or nearby from Tromso in the month of Jan/Feb 2019. Are ghe roads open on that route
Written August 16, 2018
Hi, it would be difficult to advise on your question as there is likely to be heavy snow at the time you are going. The bus services from Tromso are good and regular but it would be best to check with the tourist information centre when you get to Tromso, or at the hotel you stay at. Almost everyone in Tromso speaks very good English.

Hi, I’m going to arrive Tromsø by cruise in this coming July, then fly to Oslo directly. I’m wondering should I get there by bus? If yes what bus route should I take, and how far from the port to to the bus stop? Thanks.
Written March 22, 2018
There is a regular bus from the port in Tromso to the airport. Great service and very easy. Takes about 10/15 minutes.
We used the bus to travel to/from Tromso and the airport.

May I know what should pack and wear during trips in March? What’s the temperature? Thank you.
Written January 23, 2018
We just returned from Tromso. Recommend to prepare the following essentials:
1. Mittens NOT gloves (mittens keep your fingers together and warmer)
2. Heat packs at 4 pkt per day, use 2 in gloves, 2 in boots(Daiso or Decathlon)
3. Inner thermal wear (Uniqlo extra warm heat tec also ok)
4. Waterproof ski pants and ski jacket (Re-wearable everyday, fuss free way of keeping yourself warm and dry)
5. Waterproof hiking boots and crampons (which are shoes spikes)
6. Beanie (best if it covers your ears)
