About Arctic Experience Tromso
I go further, to bring you closer! I keep it small, friendly and personal; My name is Dan, and I`m a native Norwegian, born and raised in Arctic Norway. I grew up under the Northern lights, so I know the nature up here, the folklore, the culture and the best places to find the lights. I am also a professional photographer, and if your camera is up to the challenge of taking pictures of the Aurora, I will show you how to set it up for doing just that. I will also take pictures and e-mail you after the tour, free of charge of course. My dedication creates your memories, so I will go as long as it takes and do whatever it takes to give you the best possibility to see the lights :) All the best, Dan the Aurora Man :)

Unfortunately had to cancel the tour due to the restrictions in Norway. Dan was so helpful in letting us reschedule for 2021 but it seems that is unlikely for us to - he has given us a full refund within 24 hours of emailing him and I can’t commend him enough considering tourism like many other organisations has been hit hard. We intend to hopefully rebook with Dan one day - We might even have to bring some of our own snacks to compete against the popular reviews of Dan’s carrot cake and soups!

I did different tours in Tromsø chasing the northern lights. Big group tours and tours like Dan’s, so I think I can compare. All my tours in Tromsø were great but what I love about Dan is the small group which makes the quality much better. Instead of 50+ people, you’re with under 10 in a van. N lights is hit or miss — you won’t have a better chance seeing it with a different tour agency, or from a different viewpoint (i think most Tromsø guided all talk to each other and end up chasing lights around same location, but they may park at different spots). You’re at the mercy of fate if you see N Lights — your guide probably can’t control the outcome . What you probably CAN control is the kind of experience you have chasing it. I loved dan’s tour because there were so much less people. He took you to spots that were less crowded so you can enjoy the experience in peace and quiet. He had fold out chairs. He was super patient and knowledgeable and helped people set up their fancy cameras settings. He offered SO many photos (this is also a big difference from the big group tours which limits your photos) and kept offering to take more photos of me because he knew I didn’t carry a camera. The food snack quality is amazing!!!! Actual cake, tasty soup, and really great coffee and tea. The big tour bus group’s snacks felt watered down due to the number of people. Dan is also just such a delightful human being. Great humor, super energy, and just a positive energy about him. Really thoughtful. And he was able to turn around the photos within hours!!! If I’d do it again and if I were to recommend to people how to do the N lights in Tromso via tours, if budget is not an issue, I’d say do at least one small group expensive one like Dan’s and then one with the big group for cheese. You probably need to do multiple tours anyway to be able to see the lights unless you’re just fabulously lucky your first try. I was really able to relax and enjoy appreciating the N lights in the small group experience Dan provided, more so than the big group’s.

We went on Dan's northern light hunt in early March and had a wonderful time. He had done his homework well and took us to an area where there was a break in the clouds to see the aurora. He made sure we were warm enough and lent us tripods and his expertise on camera setting to take pictures. As the aurora wasn't very strong that evening we would have missed it altogether thinking it was a cloud, but through the camera we got some good pictures of the classic green glow. Having checked there was no better viewing site he preceded to make a fire for us to sit round whilst he told us about the science and myths of the aurora and other tales of Norwegian and Sami life, whilst we enjoyed homemade soup and cake he had brought along for us. Afterwards he sent us copies of his photos too. An altogether magical evening.with a lovely enthusiastic guide.

Our family booked a tour with several other tour companies so we know what we are talking about. Where the others didnt bother driving more than a half an hour, Dan went beyond what he promises. The other companies stayed just near the City and we were just waiting utill the sky would clear up. We had more than 6 big coaches next to us so it wasnt that special. Loud people all around us and no distance between the groups at all. They kept saying it was nonsence to drive around if you could see the lights so close to town. I do not agree because we saw the difference between a very clear bright sky and a light poluted area. Dan drove untill Finland and would have gone even further, he tries to find the best spot with no one else around. We had the clearest sky and a fantastic aurora show. He really thought of everything. So generous with all the food he had brought and he really does everything to make you feel comfortable and make it an once in a life time experience. Our children also enjoyed it a lot, they loved the bonfire, cookies, cake, soup etc etc. He made a lot of photos of us and didnt make us feel uncomfortable asking him. We arrived very late at the hotel but he sent us the photos before morning! He is just really good in what he does and wants to deliver the best. We can honestly say that he is the guy to book a northern lights tour in Tromsø. A fantastic experience!!!! And Dan made our dream come true.

Dan found us a big clearing in the sky, while we afterwards heard that other people on chases couldn't find aurora that same night! Our chase was very well-organized (there were even water bottles next to each seat), with a small, cozy group of 8. We loved the authenticity and local knowledge of a Norwegian, in contrast to most other tours. (e.g. Dan took some time to search for a place that served the Norwegian dish "lutefisk", which other (foreign) guides hadn't even heard of). Dan was also the most warm and friendly Norwegian we met during our week-long trip (the other Norwegians in the north were a bit less customer-oriented). He made us a large fire which was actually useful for getting warmed up (the other companies make a tiny firebowl which is more ornamental than useful). We took 3 aurora chases with different companies that week, and Dan's was by far the nicest and most comfortable experience.
