We booked this night dog sledding tour spontanously by sending an Email over the homepage and asking for a tour the next day (missed our original tour with another company). Sandra immediatly answered and as the day tours were fully booked we (me and 2 children, 7 and 16 years) decided the night tour. We were only a very small group of 5 people, guided by Tore the owner. So my nephew had his own sledge, my daughter and I shared one and there was a couple sharing one. It was a fantastic experience, despite or maybe due the to fact I was falling off the sledge twice ;-) I would absolutely recommend the night tour, as it was an even more special, "wild" experience! My daughter and nephew also enjoyed it very much; the dogs were friendly and really wanted to run. You could feel their unhappiness when stopping on the way and the power they have when pulling the sledge. It was really amazing driving the sledge on your own for 2 hours, also as we didn't have to stop too often (only 4 sledges) and would highly recommend it. You need some basic fitness I would say, as you really need to control the sledge with the break, hold your balance etc. but I was absolutely able to do it... Afterwards some hot tea, biscuits and very interestic information about the 92 dogs living there from Birte. If you think about Active Tromso or the other local dog sledding company, I would hightly recommend Active Tromso - you will get more for your money and most likely the adventure you are really looking for!

My boyfriend and I signed up for dog sledding with Active Tromso knowing that it would involve some physical activity on our part and I was a little nervous for what that meant. However, the snow was fresh during our visit (no ice to break through) so it really wasn’t bad at all and was actually my favorite activity during our trip to Norway by far.
We arrived to the base camp and changed into warmer clothes and boots provided by Active Tromso. I definitely recommend doing this as the dogs will jump on you and you’ll be smelling like them by the end of the day. :) Then our guide gave us instructions on how to steer and ride in the dog sled. I was still nervous but we were definitely prepared with the information we needed before we were on our way. We went dog sledding for approximately 2 hours and stopped throughout to trade drivers (optional). The trip would’ve been longer had it not been so warm for the dogs outside.
Once we returned to the base camp we helped kennel the dogs and got to play and take pics with them. Then we all sat in a covered cave-like area around a fire and chatted about the dog sledding industry, how Active Tromso takes care of their dogs and why they choose to do smaller group tours. Our guides Martin and Christine were very enthusiastic about answering questions and it was clear that they love what they do. Tour guides can definitely make or break an experience and we had the best! Also, I wanted to note that the owner of the company was our bus driver and he was working out on the trail while we went on our excursion. We were impressed with his involvement. If you do some research on him you’ll see that he has quite the resume!
Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend using this company!

Lisa, I’m honestly blown away by how lovely this review is. We are definitely going to add it to our wall of fame.
Tore, the owner, is actively involved in every aspect of the business - even tough it sometimes feels like the work is never done. He’s used to doing it all.
We hope to see you again very soon!
Best wishes,

We did the tour today with a small group of 10 people and were picked up by bus. After a 30min ride we were given proper snow suits and boots and a very understandable instruction how to ride the sled. 2 person each sled with 5 dogs. we had many options to change the driver (almost every 10min). It lasted around 2-2.5hours and the dogs were really amazing. Very motivated and in good shape. It was a once in a life-time experience. Our guide also helped us take some photos during the ride. After sledding we helped to unharness the dogs and met them again at their camp. we had a lot of time cuddling and kissing all the dogs at the camp. It was also nice hearing the stories of our guide around a camp fire with tea, coffee and cookies. all in all, most amazing time in Tromsø and you can really see the owners love their dogs and they are well looked after. the dogs are real sled dogs competing in actual races, not just for tourists and you can feel their power. the whole ride is very doable if you bring a normal fitness level. just be sure being able to run up-hill on snow at some point but you can always change the driver.

We arrived at the camp and were given all the nessasary equipment (Snow suits, boots, mittens) to keep us warm. One of the friendly staff, Bee, made sure everyone has well fitting equipment. After that our guide Martin gave us a very comprehensive instruction how to ride the sled.
Two people shared a sled, one driving and one riding it as a passenger. Its pulled by five very motivated dogs. You could see the dogs are well taken care of and love what they doing. The staff is very experienced and could answer all my questions about dog sleeding. Driving the sled was great, you can change roles whenever you want. Martin helped out if there was a problem and gave trips in what you can improve. The landscape was incredible and the tour lasted around 2-2.5 hours.
The tour ended with a nice cup of coffee/tea in the little hut with a fire place and some interesting stories which Tore continued while he was dropping us off in town.
If you are looking for a company with smaller tour groups, friendly and experienced staff and happy dogs I can highly recommend it to everyone who visits Tromso.
This was one of the best days of my life! I already booked my next tour with this guys!
Thank you so much.

Well fed and breaded dogs
Excellent Guide (Thank you )
Very good equipment and warm clothing
More than 2 hours of pure sledding (big plus)
Doesn't feel commercial at all, actually it is the real deal. So if you really want to experience dog sledding and not just doing a commercial tour. Those are the guys to be with.
You drive yourself and you have plenty of time to switch with your buddy
Very welcoming hosts
Safety is the firs thing, the guide didn't think twice to stop and go help anyone who he thinks might be having trouble.
To sum up, the best in Tromso !

We went with Active Tromso for the Dog Sledding experience on Jan 20th, and this has been one of the best things we did on our holiday so far. The owner Tore, who picked us up from Tromso, is a modest and humble man with a pleasant disposition despite being a Legend in the world of Dog Sledding. The Staff at the venue Martin & Be are simply amazing, genuinely care about the dogs and the customers wanting an experience, and are the most helpful people who genuinely want to make your experience the best you can have. They gave us warm gear to wear, briefed on safety and explained how to drive/stop. We had an hour long ride in a really scenic spot, took turns mushing and sitting in sled, and met the dogs after. The dogs are amazing and friendly and want to play with you and are excited when u go near them. Wish we could have seen some puppies, that would have been amazing. Maybe next time. We had some great coffee/tea/cookies and were regaled with stories and anecdotes from the sledding world.
Thank You Martin & Be (Dont know her full name) for helping us navigate the slippery conditions, and for giving our teenager a chance with mushing. We sincerely appreciate what you did for us and made our holiday very memorable.
We recommend doing a dog sledding experience with Active Tromso if you are planning a visit here.

Sydneysider, thank you for sharing such a positive experience. It means the world to our entire team, especially Martin and B.
We wish we could have shared the experience of having newly born puppies in the kennel but unfortunately the harsh winter weather and our busy schedules are not ideal for raising the next generation of sled dogs. Puppies under 8 weeks of age do not tolerate the deep cold at all, even the double-coated breeds. Most of our puppies are born in early spring or summer to make sure they grow up in an environment that is safe.
The dogs are part of our family, and so of course we want to give them a happy, healthy and balanced home.
Hope to see you again soon!
Best wishes,
The Active Tromsø Team

If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary then I would highly recommend Active Tromso.
I booked a surprise trip for my girlfriend to dog sledding whilst possibly getting the chance to see the Northern lights, and although we didn’t see the lights we had a great experience. Although the trip is advertised as self driving, I didn’t realise how active it would be! If you aren’t very fit then I would recommend doing something less active as we found it quite challenging! That being said once we got the hang of things we really enjoyed ourselves and were glad we did something so different. Tore was a very attentive and knowledgable guide who made us feel safe when we fell off the sled! As the Northern lights are unpredictable, doing an activity with Active Tromso makes more sense as you still have a great experience even if you don’t see the lights.
Thank you Active Tromso for the experience, we won’t forget it!

We couldn't have wished for more!
We had a great day with Sandra, Tore and their great dogs.
We had a husky sled on wheels until nighttime and continued sitting around a campfire listening to Tores stories.
The weather was great so very saw a lot of Northern lights before we went back to the city.
Thank you so much, we will definitely come back for a sledding trip on snow :)
Give cuddles to the dogs from us - yes, to all of them please :)

This company is too much terrible and unacceptable. We of 3 people booked the tour in the beginning of December with husky sledding, and when we came to Tromso in December 2020, there was so snow.
He offered us 2 options, either go with the sledding with wheels or cancel the tour. And he even said that there will be refund.
Yet after we canceled the tour, there was no refund until now. We are trying to contact him and email and call him but he does not answer of reply.
This is very BAD business and please avoid it at all cost!

Fantastic Experience All Round! This is a more intimate dog sledding experience i.e. you will not find big buses full of tourists here which is lovely. On arrival we were given very good warm overalls, gloves and chunky boots which made a huge difference (definitely make use of them). My friends, partner and I were a bit ignorant in that we thought professionals would be driving our sleds. When we first learned that this was not the case we were a little anxious but after being shown how to and experiencing it we wouldn't have wanted anything other than to experience driving the sleds ourselves. How often can you say you drove a dog sled yourself right? My partner and I took turns as strength is needed especially when helping the dogs to get over some hills. We all followed our amazing guide Emilie who was always keeping an eye on us and stopping when necessary. The tour was the perfect duration and afterwards our group enjoyed coffees, teas, biscuits and chats around a fire. We were also offered more time to spend with the dogs if we wanted but I was happy to stay by the fire. It was clear to see that the dogs are happy and well looked after there. They adored our guide Emilie and got so excited when she was near them. It's no wonder they loved her as she is oozing with personality. 100% recommend - definitely the highlight of our trip to Norway!

Hi, do you suggest this experience also to people that are afraid by dogs?

Do you offer a refund on trips if pre-booked but no/not enough snow has fallen to make the trip possible? Also curious if there are any provisions to either change the date or offer a small refunf if no Northern Lights are seen the night of the booked trip? I know this is nature and there are no guarantees but I know some tour operators in Florida offer similar guarantees on fishing trips to help tourist overcome pre-booking reluctance & encourage pre-book vs waiting until we get there. Open to your suggestions. Thanks

Hey, I suggest you ask them directly. We had one of those perfect days when I went kayaking with them and therefore didn't have to ask for anything like this...
Have a great trip!

They were always pretty good at getting back to me when I emailed with enquiries, although it sometimes took a couple of days because they're out so much of the time on the activities and because of the time difference.

Hi, We are 5 persons and are interested in a dog sledding tour (either a day or night tour) during our stay in Tromsö from Jan 12th till 15th. Could you tell me a bit how the program for both tours look like.

Hello,
My dad [74] & I are booked on one of the Dog Sledding Evenings in January, with your company, and are wondering just how physical this activity is please.
What is actually entailed in the activity, and is it aerobic fitness or strength that is required?
We just want to know if we need to do some specific exercises in the next 5 weeks!
Thanks, Toni :)
