Kvaloya mountain is located at the north edge of Tromso. We had arranged a guide from the Tromso Outdoor tour company. A tour guide for a hike in such weather is essential. And we also need to arrange our hiking accessories like snowshoes, hiking poles etc. the guide had sent us the starting location. We navigated there on time using Google maps and the drive to this start-point by itself was beautiful. Most of the areas were empty with no houses or shops and no people, just thick layers of snow. We were not able to identify the parking slot at the start point because of the snow. After some time, the guide came with three other people who were going to Hike with us on this trip. Though I had forgotten my jacket, my guide helped me with one. We all found snowshoes that fit us and we were ready to begin. The mountain ahead just seems like layers of snow, with no trees and bushes. Well, it is not so easy to get used to these snowshoes. It's only after about 100m of walk that you get comfortable with them. And besides, climbing ahead was more difficult because of the cold weather and winds. Also considering that we were low on energy,
we requested our guide to break. But our guide would just keep promising that it's only a few more metres every time we asked him and finally after 2hrs, we reached the viewpoint. There was a lake on the other side of this mountain.

The view was so amazing. We felt lucky to have reached there and we sat there in the midst of the cold winds. After taking photos, we began the downward hike. It was easier this way because the wind was blowing in the opposite direction. But I was dying of thirst and we dint have water. So, finally, I decided to eat some ice. I collected some ice from some of the leaves and ate them, it did help me recover. It took almost 4 hours to complete this trek. And it was getting dark already. It was an amazing experience but remember to do some preparations and take enough water.

A visit to Grotfjord is a must when visiting Tromsø! The scenery is unlike anything else. There are beach stops for taking pictures of the cute red boat garages and the breathtaking landscape. What I enjoyed most was the remoteness of it all. It was such a great way to disconnect and get back in touch with nature. Warning though: the drive is treacherous (especially when the road freezes over after a bit of rain) and your car can easily slip on the black ice , I would advise going with a tour company. They know how to navigate through the narrow and windy roads and the tour guides will know the most important places to visit.

Have been here twice last year during the winter nights and it is a good spot to catch the glimpse of the auroras if you’re lucky. Went back this year again during winter and tried to see how it looks like in the morning twilight and I was really in awe of how beautiful the place is in the day. (Really dark at night hence you can’t really make out the details of the buildings / fjords / surroundings of the beach)

Had a fabulous short stop here in the middle of polar winter, thanks to Greenlander tours. We had a picnic on the beach in sub-zero temps with snow blowing all around us - amazing!
Very impressed with the clean and accessible toilet facilities, which we really didn't expect to find in the middle of winter and in the middle of nowhere.
Must come back in summer for a swim!

Overall good except the Tromsø Wilderness Center where the huskies living conditions is so bad and they are crying for help. It looks like a dog tortured center where they are being chained with big fat mental chains and living in a small wooden box. None of the doggies there look happy all of them look so depressed. Is better some animals welfare society go and check the place to make sure the doggies are taken good care. I was told by the lady who welcomed us there that they have 300 over doggies but only have 7 workers taking care of all of them. There is a dog crying nonstop throughout our visit. The cry was in a extreme wrenching manner.

The reindeers feeding was a very good experience where the reindeers are free to move around in a very huge areas. I am very pleased with the way they take care of the reindeers.

This place is just so magical and wonderful on its own, and even more especial when full of whales playing... Amazing during the northern light period.

We were driving there in a snowstorm asking ourselves what are we doing here. Typical tourists we are! Of course, when we arrived there - there was nothing. It was dark, everyone was inside and all there was was snow snow snow and yet, somehow this is what made it so special to us. Our little adveture daytour in snowy dark Norway!

Nice beach and beautiful view to the mountains. Road to Grotfjord is very narrow but very good to drive. Beware of oncoming traffic.
