Nice place. There is a piano where everyone can try out their "talent", maybe the piano's volume could be tuned down by two dB.
Staff are very friendly. I liked the letter writing corner and small little "did you know notes", but maybe something different in every note rather than one repeated message all over the places

Thank you for visiting and leaving a review! We'd just like to note that the exhibition you're describing, «Like Betzy» closed in February 2020. We have now made room for a café and a maker space, and new exhibitions keep coming.

It was a surprise! Like Betzy contemporary exhibition is way beyond my expectations. The works are selected carefully, you can follow her life and art till the end. I did not hear of her before this visit, made me to feel her like Frida Kahlo of the North. The temporary exhibition is also amazing - lots of different perspectives, classics and contemporary art made just a perfect match. Sculptures and paintings, even the video of the outdoor setting at the ocean accompanied with music are fascinating. Recommended even after an outdoor activity!

Was very disappointed in this museum. Last time we visited , it had a great range of paintings with some superb historical pieces.
This time, apart from a few landscapes on the top floor the entire museum was taken up by a few tedious installations.
All the wall space was bare ! On enquiring we were told that the paintings were in the vaults.
I strongly suggest that they are brought out , especially as the other museums were closed .
There was room enough for the modern stuff as well as the art which we know to be hidden from sight.

This Northern Norway Art Museum (Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum) is a small museum, and needs only about one hour.

The collection focusses on late 19th century and early 20th century works depicting life in the cold north of Norway. While the paintings are more than competent, none are really outstanding. The small thrill, since you're already in Northern Norway, is recognising the scenes in the paintings.

The more modern works are also interesting, but not particularly captivating or memorable.

I had a sense that explanations of the artistic trends were lacking, without which it was hard to make much sense of what one was seeing. On the other hand, I realise how hard it is when the collection is so small, to draw any connections between isolated works, to come up with any story.

Entry = 80 krone. The museum is located very close to the main church in downtown Tromso.

North Norwegian Art Museum is right opposite the Tourist Info center. We had quality time there. On the 3rd floor, visitors can paint, draw, or just play around with the paint brushes. This was something new to us! My daughter and my wife had a gala time showing off their skills.
They have a very decent collection spread across 3 floors.

This museum is good if you want to see some landscapes of Northern Norway and there was a good exhibition regarding 'Betsy'. There is also a reasonable exhibition on Sami life. However, the layout of the museum is confusing and mismatched. Dates on the works would be useful. The exhibition on Betsy was hypocritical, stating that female artists are always known by their first name and not their second (e.g. Warhol, Munch). However, the exhibition constantly only used her first name. If this had better organisation, and more explanation (especially on the Sami exhibition) this gallery would be excellent.

Thank you for visiting and writing a review. We agree that the layout isn't optimal, and we constantly try to make it better. We refer to Betzy Akersloot-Berg as Betzy to underline our point, just as we refer to the male artists as Peder and Otto. We've noted your other points and will try to address them in the future.

This museum is small but carries a great range of art works. It's permanent collection of art on the first floor ranges from late 1700(I think) to 2012 is really great. I particularly enjoyed seeing the Munch paintings. Amonst the many artists new to me I saw Normann and Sinding works for the first time. Their ability to capture light is lovely. There was also a painting of a night scene with the Aurora Borealis which I could quite happily have taken home with me just beautiful. One of the most modern paintings is by David Hockney - Midnight Sun - to be honest I think it a rather naive childish style of painting. The top floor houses textiles, photographs and sculpture. A fab red velvet sculpture called "Lump" was lovely - very different, and I enjoyed the series of photos by Robert A Robinson of Northern Norwegian life. Super. The ground floor has a temporary exhibit of textile works. Considering how small this museum is, it was perfect not so many things that it overloads the senses or your memory and best of all entrance is FREE!!!! Friendly welcoming staff and fresh pink roses around the building added to the pleasure of the visit 10/10.

We were greeted warmly and the woman on reception explained everything for us without needing to ask. There is a free-to-use cloakroom with lockable lockers to store coats and bags, and we were provided with English guidebooks explaining the art work.

This place has a really great collection of historical and modern artwork, with an emphasis on natural materials and Norwegian historical influences. I'm not as much of an art person as my partner, but this was really enjoyable!

A nice chance to duck into Norwegian and northern art. A curious collection of varied works of art, all for free. Right size to not get too tired and surely everyone will find something to relate to as the three floors display exhibits of plenty of genres.
