- ManchesterDaneManchester, United Kingdom80 contributionsPolar lifeWasn’t quite sure what to expect but it is a very comprehensive museum of polar life with lots and lots of artefacts and stuffed animals. Spread across 3 floors it can get a little tight especially when tours come through. Enjoyed reading about polar life. I would recommend wearing sensible footwear especially as some surfaces have not been gritted and in fact a gent slipped outside as we were leavingVisited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 1, 2023
- AMJ139 contributionsUnusual and EducationalThis is a house museum focused mainly on period polar hunting methods, past arctic explorers of the region, and a contemporary exhibit depicting a queer narrative of the same. The hunting section can be a bit of a shock considering most people don't think about that kind of thing, much less look at it all that often. Overall, I enjoyed the museum, it's a straightforward presentation of the realities of historical exploration, subsistence living, and the commercial business of living in the arctic.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 20, 2023
- PWStaffordshireStaffordshire, United Kingdom109 contributionsThis museum is a MUST for visitors to TromsoReally excellent museum of polar expeditions and life. The museum was full of items from polar expeditions, stuffed animals, the story of Roald Amundsen. It was a great exhibition for all ages. One not to be missed.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 21, 2023
- Britta L15 contributionsvery interesting, a must-visit!We loved the little museum, full of original exhibits and information. It's very entertaining with all the scenarios. You have to take your time for all the little hidden treasures in the scenes, the original diaries and don't forget to step into the hut and have a look, how they lived, if you are brave enough to face the grumpy Husky or was it a wolf? Dive into history with the original audio here and there. We really recommend a visit. Thanks to the wonderful staff, cheers from the Lutz-familyVisited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 1, 2024
- KarenNewmachar, United Kingdom69 contributionsInteresting if you want to learn about polar explorationInteresting to learn about polar expeditions and wildlife hunting. Not great if you have small kids as mostly reading and looking at exhibits. Lots of stuffed wildlife - seals, polar bears, musk ox etcVisited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2024
- Ben TLeicester, United Kingdom12 contributionsInteresting to understand more about Tromso heritageVisited during a trip with friends to Tromso for a few days. Greeted well and given the guide in English which made following the trail a little easier (given 2 for 4 of us). Although a few signed are in English it would be difficult to follow without the guide. Some of the tour was interesting and clearly passionate about the heritage of the area. Nice way to pass an hour or so in the beautiful city.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 14, 2024
- BecBirmingham, United Kingdom543 contributionsa must-visitI was so surprised by this museum. We went in mostly to escape some awful weather, but I am so glad that we did. It's definitely worth the visit and so reasonably priced. We ended up spending hours in there, the information sheets given to us were so detailed and everything was so interesting. They have some fascinating displays including a walrus skeleton which blew my mind!Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 22, 2024
- honeyI’mhome61Greater Manchester, United Kingdom738 contributionsInteresting and informativeSo much to look at, so much to see. Very interesting collection of old artefacts from a bygone era of Scandinavian hunting. Great value for money and I’d highly recommend, suitable for all ages.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 14, 2024
- Culture605092358927 contributionsGreat little museumReally interesting museum covering the history of polar exploration and hunting and currently a small room on overlooked LGBT history in polar exploration. A guide book was provided in many languages with lots of interesting information for each exhibit room, I happily spent a couple of hours here looking around everything and admiring the resilience and perseverance of the explorers and inhabitants of the arctic. Perfect place to spend a few hours between other activities or when the weather is poorVisited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 15, 2024
- danielle gPenfield, New York19 contributionsIt was fineIt was a bit expensive for what it was. I didn’t realize there would be such a focus on trapping and hunting instead of things I found more interesting such as details of the Sami culture and how expeditions interacted with the local environment. Also because we spoke English it was hard to access the informationVisited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 26, 2024

The museum is located in a former customs warehouse (1833). It traces the history of the expeditions of trappers and explorers in the Arctic regions: whaling in the 17th century, fur-bearing animals in the 18th century, seals from 1700 to the present day ... You can see the reconstruction of a trapper's hut. Traps, skis, objects necessary for survival and models of ships bring this epic to life. An entire room is devoted to Roald Amundsen and his polar expeditions...Very nice museum

Take your time to read the story at the end of the guide book before looking at the exhibits in the final room. This is an incredible account of endurance by early explorers and I felt the best part of the museum. Worth a visit while in Tromsø

Visited for Twilight at the Museum and was very impressed with how well laid out the museum displays were. Staff were very friendly and helpful. There were a number of actors dressed as historic figures engaging with visitors. The sensory tunnel for the evening was a nice addition in the dim light too.

Amazing! I grew up hearing storied of Shackleton and Mawson, and when I moved to England and started teaching I discovered Scott. Really informative and easy to follow. Incredible paintings on the roof as you enter, you could lie down and stare at them for hours. The shop at the end is really good and reasonably priced. Being free to enter was also a massive bonus.

Very pleased to be able to see all the great artifacts on display here, detailing not only the polar expeditions that took off from this area but also the life and times of the seal and whale hunters who made their lives and their living here. Several areas where you can see a small exhibit set up, detailing examples of their hard lives. Descriptive text of displayed items were mainly in Norwegian, small amounts in translated English. However, a guide available from the front desk in many languages. Sami day when we visited, so free entrance!

Although this musuem is relatively small, there is a wealth of information about life in days gone by in the Arctic region. There are a lot of stuffed animals (mostly marine) and you can get an idea of how life used to be in the cold north and how people lived by hunting. There is also a lot to see about the Arctic explorers and expeditions. Most of the displays are in Norwegian, but you are lent a booklet with translations into English, French or other languages.

An extremely informative museum (obviously what you would expect...) that offered the finer detail of the norwegian polar expeditions. Everything you needed and kept my family and I interested for hours. Being placed directly where most of the expeditions sailed from added to the wonder of the museum. A must visit in Tromso.

Great museum about Roald Amundsen , Fritjof Nansen and others of the great Norwegian explorers with a lot of artefacts and pictures showing the rough life they had then on their expeditions. They were throughly heroes and Daredevils like our times astronauts. It’s a good idea to see the Norwegian film ”Admundsen” before you see the museum.

Sorry but I can’t remember how much it was to go in but it must have been cheap 😂. It’s definitely worth a visit, lots to see over a few floors, lots about hunting but it’s a culture thing. Go and enjoy it !
