About
North on the whale island 40 minutes drive threw amazing coastal scenery you will find the most charming place called Risvika. This is our homeplace, and for generations my family have lived by farming and fishing here on the coast. Threw times things have changed, and now the farm has no animals any more. One day my father sat under the magic of the the northern lights when he descided to share with people the amazing gift of nature.. Since 2004 we have had the pleasure to welcome guests from around the world into our hearts and home. Our speciality is the Small groups, the local guides from our area, and the family that gives the real authentic north Norwegian charm that makes our guests come back. Join us when we go chasing the northern lights, or go on the amazing whale safari. Let yourself be taken away with the fun stories, the wormth from the bonfire, the elements of nature and the memory that last for a lifetime.. Hope to be there and share the gift of natur with you!

Superb tour to see the Northern Lights. Trine was the perfect guide, lots of humour (had the entire minibus laughing out loud when we went round the “northerliest” roundabout in a tunnel, in the world - twice) and so knowledgeable. We were treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, then had a break with tea, coffee and cake by a lovely indoor fire - followed by toasted marshmallows. Trine told us all about her family, who had farmed locally on some of the land we were watching the lights from. As we were heading back, the aurora erupted again, even more spectacularly than before and she immediately stopped the bus and we all piled off again to see the amazing display. I can’t recommend Trine and her company highly enough, it was the perfect end to a 10 day holiday in Norway and I’d go back with them again in a heartbeat. 10/10

What an amazing experience!
We were picked up by Trine and she took us to her farm where we where greeted with a Sami tent and a very nice bonfire. It was my birthday on that night and we couldn't have had a better host for such a memorable evening. Trine went above and beyond to make us feel at home and comfortable, with a variety of many hot drinks, cake, lots of stories that felt very personal and cultural, we learned a lot!
We had to take an hour drive, deep in the mountains to see the lights and it didn't disappoint. When they appeared on the sky, the lights were dancing for more than one hour, its was absolutely magical!! Trine was as sweet as ever, taking pictures of the whole group during the visit, offering us hot drinks and telling us about the phenomenon we were all witnessing.
We absolutely recommend Tromso Friluftsenter if you're looking for an unforgettable evening surrounded by a starry sky and the dancing lights ✨❤️ Wouldn't have it any other way!!

Dear Knut

Thank you for your knowledgable friendly and fun experience. We had an unexpected hut with a beautiful fire, we appreciated the humouous, interesting stories and friendliness filled the evening with as much interest as the Northern lights. The chocolate cake was fabulous we highly recommend it and the hot drinks were appreciated. Even after we saw the amazing light, Knut went out of his way to make our experience so memorable by finding a spontaneous northern lights display on the way home which we very much appreciated. He was so caring, he dropped us off at our hotel and played a lovely video of the northern lights history on the coach which he even replayed for a child who had fallen asleep. We highly recommend you book with Knut.

I cannot rave enough about how amazing this northern lights experience is with Tromso Friluftsenter is! We were met by the very friendly and talkative Knut in front of Scandic Ishavshotel.
Throughout the bus journey Knut was amazing! You can definitely see how passionate he was about the northern lights!
The weather was not so great after driving for an hour that we kept on driving and crossed the border into Finland. Once we crossed the border the clouds disappeared and there it was.... the roaring northern lights above us.
Knut was so patient and took our photos beneath the northern lights. He never rushed us, let us enjoy the lights for as long as we needed. My husband and I requested a few more photos to be taken, and Knut was more than happy to keep snapping away.
We ended up returning back to the hotel two hours later than expected (2am)! Knut was even nice enough to drop us off at our Airbnb accommodation just up the hill. What amazing service!
I recommend Friluftsenter one hundred times over!!

A first class experience from start to finish. Trine looked after us so well throughout the evening. Not only was her knowledge of the Aurora phenomenal, she helped everyone with their camera settings to get the most from the experience but also took some photos of everyone with the Aurora backdrop. We learned so much about Norwegian family life on the journey which was fascinating.

The weather was awful in Tromso, but she trekked north and eventually into Finland where we had clear skies and a great Aurora show, plus hot refreshmentsand cake.

A great and unique small group adventure and would thoroughly recommend.

We did the Northern Lights hunt during our trip to Tromsø and we couldn’t have asked for any better. Our guide Gina was, with no shadow of a doubt, simply the best. The day was cloudy and the aurora apps were not working properly that day so our hopes were frankly pretty low. However, nothing of that mattered to her. She drove us to a spot she knew and we managed to see one of the most amazing shows we have ever experienced.

She took beautiful pictures of us and of the sky which she shared later next day and gave us all types of explanations about the physics of the Northern Lights all trip long. After we had watched for a very long while the Northern Lights, she invited us to a small tent nearby and offered us some beverages. She also did not hesitate to answer any of our questions and was very king during all the excursion.

This was, by far, our best activity in Tromsø (we also did snowmobile driving, daily trip to Sommarøy and a whale watching boat trip) and was exclusively because of Gina. Apart from the experience of watching the Northern Lights, she added an extra by being very kind and close to us, which made those hours ones we will never forget. We will not be able to thank you enough for the experience you brought to us. We wish you all the best to you and your company and we hope to see you again someday!

The Aurora treated us to a fantastic display but the experience was made better by Knut our guide who was welcoming and friendly. The minibus was one of the most comfortable I have ever been on and even had USB ports. Knut took pictures for everyone, lent out tripods and even took us on a detour to see some reindeer on the way home. The hut with fire and hot chocolate and cake were welcome although I spent most of the evening outside watching the lights!

What a fabulous night - everything we could have wished for 😊 Trine was the perfect host and tour guide. We were very lucky and had a really good show of lights, but the whole experience was made so much more enjoyable with Trine’s wonderful energy, her stories and her local information. The hot chocolate and cake was very welcome in a lovely wooden hut with a stove as it was-19 degrees outside and trine took some cool photos of us with her high quality camera.
If you are visiting Tromso to chase the lights, chase down this family run company first.
Highly recommended!!!

Knut of Tromsø Friluftsenter has been a really great guide!
The weather was really bad that weekend in Tromsø area.
He offered us the chance to do a real chase beyond the Finnish border to search a hole in the clouds to try to see the Northern Lights and...He did it! Driving us safely for kilometers despite the bad weather, telling us very interesting things about Norwegian people and curiosities, offering us advice on taking pictures, in additions to cake, coffee and tripods.
Great tour, great time and yes...We saw the Aurora at last! And he took a beautiful pic of us with the Lights!
We had already lost the hope to see it..So really thank you.

Trine was a delightful tour guide with lots of useful local knowledge that she shared as she drove as well as personal insight to the culture and area when in the Lavvu enjoying delicious hot chocolates and cakes by the fire.
Trine was very good to manage our expectations but then we had the best night waiting under clear skies for Aurora to appear. She took so many photos for everyone and was so kind to a couple who were recently married; she really cared for everyone’s experience and this was the best!

Plus she made our dreams of going round the most northern under ground roundabout come true ;p

Thank you Trine!
