I had a lovely bracing walk up to the lake and when I arrived, it was covered in snow. The only way you could tell it was a lake because there were lifesavers in places around. I also found the Tromso Geophysical Observatory which had a screen showing auroral activity.

We took the bus here at 7pm as the hotel receptionsit said you could see the northern lights there....and we did! Spectacular views and experience of the lights dancing over the frozen and snowy lake. Didn't even have to pay to take a tour there, just a local bus!

If you are staying in Tromsø and the sky is looking clear this is one of the darker places you can go to see the lights without leaving the island. It was a half hour walk (uphill) from the centre of Tromsø. The roads are really well lit but shoe spikes might be advisable.

I was really lucky as got to experience an hour of ever changing lights the night that I went.

When you walk to here, have a compass or GPS with you. With this much snow, easily you can get lost.

If you walk out to the centre of the frozen lake, then you have a great field of vision - pretty much 360 degrees. There is a little light from the path around the perimeter of the lake, but it really doesn't impact the viewing, and I even got some good photos just using my iPhone & a very small tripod.

One of my favorite place in Tromsø. This is also a great spot to see the aurora borealis at night. Prestvannet is also very nice during summer time. The place is so picturesque.

Lovely location, great for jogging or walking. Panoramic views of the surrounding area very popular with skaters and families on the frozen lake. On the occasions the aurora is visible in Tromso itself then this is an ideal spot to get up high and away from the city lights.

I only discovered this after years of living here, embarrassingly. It's a beautiful little lake with a great path all around it - it is 2-3 km to walk the entire path. I sometimes bike it. On a sunny day, I highly recommend this. Lots of local birds. You can see distant mountains, and it's a wonderful, fresh experience. There are several places you can sit on benches or rocks and look at the water, and enjoy some food. Cute little bridges and treelined paths. Highly recommended - not fantastic views as in Fløya (up the mountain lift on the mainland), but super super nice, and sheltered a bit from the wind.

This is a perfect hour-or-so walk from Tromso. Absolutely beautiful (frozen when we were there) lake with great views of the mountains too.
