About
Welcome to the home of one of Norway’s great female writers. Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) lived at Bjerkebæk with her three children. Here she wrote the medieval novels for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. Join in a guided tour of the home and get to know more about the authors life. Nice exhibition on Undset’s life through her many journeys. The modern visitor centre has a nice museum shop and view to the home and a beautiful garden.

Sigrid Undset although born in Denmark is a Norwegian literary icon. After some success in Christiana / Oslo she moved with her two children, with a third on the way to Lillehammer, where she wrote her most world famous books - the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy. Apart from a period of exile during the Nazi occupation of Norway she lived in Lillehammer until her death.
This museum has lovingly restored the home to its state in the 1930s. The home became part of the local museum after the death of her daughter-in-law in the late 1990s. It became a museum in 2007.
The museum offers guided tours of the house every thirty minutes. With notice they can do the tour in English and while you wait you can have a good coffee and some lovely Norwegian cafe food. Or if the weather is good you can wander Undset’s garden, which was her pride and joy.
The tour was great. We were lucky enough to be the only ones on our tour and our guide was enthusiastic about Undset’s life and writing. The house moved me - especially to see her ‘room of her own’ where she did her writing and thinking and the phone where she received news of her Nobel prize in 1928.
I loved this museum and will definitely return for a visit when the weather is better to get a good look at the garden.

I am an admirer of Sigrid Undset's work and I like her as a woman/person with strong meanings and comments, so no wonder I wished to visit her museum also. I have been there twice and will definately go back. The guided tour is educational and fun, guides are very professional and time flies when in this museum.

It was a delight to find how well kept and professional the Bjerkebæk residence was run. Of course, we had to be guided through the buildings, but the guide was very knowledgeable and the hour with her went very fast. It was like visiting somebody nearly a hundred years ago. Yet, surprising to find that Ms. Undset had invested in quite a few modern amenities, for her time. A superb history lesson on a lovely summer day. Thank you – hight recommended!

This was a interesting little museum with interesting information about Sigrid Undset. But it is a _little_ museum which you can easily do in 30 minutes if you're impatient. If you're more contemplative maybe 1 hour? Mostly for those interested in the Author Sigrid Undset or possibly if you're interested in her place in Norwegian history.

We finally got to visit Bjerkebaek, after having read several of her books, read about her stays in Rome (especially "Jenny") and her converting to Catholicism, her strong comments on society and moral issues. Visiting the museum in Lillehammer, especially being shown around and inside her home by a very good guide, made us understand more about who Sigrid Undset was.

Another residence to view in Lillehammer was Bjerkebaek, once the home of Sigrid Undset (1882-1949). Undset is Norway’s most famous female author and her novel trilogy “Kristin Lavransdatter” set in Medieval Norway sold world-wide. She also received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 and was the third woman to have achieved this significant acknowledgement. She lived quite well from her earnings as an author and managed to raise three children on her own. Her home was furnished in the sparse Arts & Crafts style and reflected her many travel experiences. Following a visit to the USA, she even had a collection of American quilts! The summer garden was a late-summer delight and quite wild and large. A very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. You will need to book in for a guided tour, especially if requiring an English speaking guide. Our guide was very pleasant and we learnt so much, not only about Undset, but also about life in her time. We were too late to take afternoon tea but the café looked rather nice with its view over the gardens.
