If you love Norway and love scrambling up waterfalls then this is well worth while! We had loads of fun on this trek, although on arrival at the Hotel Continental soaked through and muddy we didn't really seem to fit in to their usual clientele! :-) Worth it though!

And, here's how...
1 - Head for Drammen Skisenter - address = Kristian Brenners vei 140, 3029 Drammen (and as you pass through Drammen maybe stop off en route at Condelica Bakery and Cafe, Sankt Olavs Gate, 5 Drammen 3017 - great lunch, pastries, coffee, ice creams)
2 - Keep going west on the road past the centre for about 100m, then park in the small carpark on your right.
3 - Walk up the track (it's obvious), then at the wooden bridge turn right ONTO the creek itself. Don't take any of the labelled paths, nor follow other walkers. The locals don't seem to know about this gem, and there aren't many tourists around these parts.
4 - Scramble/walk/climb up the creek and waterfall. Along the way there are 2 ladders and 1 blue rope. The 2nd ladder and rope are near the end.
5 - End the ascent at a wooden hut on your right, with a lovely lake at the top.
6 - Turn right, towards the chair lift, follow the ski slopes down to the skisentre.

It's safe enough if you wear good grip footwear and are relatively fit (no responsibility taken by the author here!). As always, weather conditions affect ease and safety, though we found it relatively straight forward and excellent fun in moderate rain (you'll get wet at the second ladder anyways!). I'd say this is probably suitable for children over 10 if they are sensible, fairly confident and up for adventure. Take water as (unusually for Norway) the creek water looks brown. I suggest allowing 2.5 - 3 hours for this walk, to allow time to pause and enjoy!

Before going to Norway, I had seen some Youtube videos of this canyon and I was totally blown away! Decided there and then it was a must on the Norway itinerary!
This canyon was the first thing we did on our trip and set the bar really high. We arrived at the car park for the canyon late in the afternoon. The car park could fit 10 cars if all parked correctly, dont park past the barrier as it can be closed at any time and you will have no way out. There is no charge for parking which is a huge plus.
So you start off up the path to the canyon which takes about 5/10 minutes to get to.
When we got there you could clearly see the canyon its very rocky and rough looking so we thought that you hike the path at the side of the canyon and eventually it would bring you into the canyon.... WRONG! HAHA. We were 3/4 of the way up the hike when we seen the ladder and rope down in the canyon and we realised that you hike up the canyon and back down the trail! Anyways we did the opposite which ended up being even more amazing!
We seen the ladder and rope at an opening near the top of the hike so we decided to go down the waterfall and hike back down the canyon instead of up! It was truly amazing !!!!!!!!
We went in July and were very surprised at the amount of water that was still flowing. At the bottom of the waterfall we met a local who said that he had never seen so much water at the falls at this time of year. In my opinion it made it so much better.
When we were going down the falls the ladder and rope was barely visible so there was an element of danger there, along with the force of the water and not to mention how cold it was ....freezing ! But its one of the most memorable part of the trip for me!
Some tips for the hike!
You are gonna get wet! Bring good footwear and a change of clothes for after.
We didn't bring any food just water as it wasn't such a long hike compared to others that you would get hungry but if you do decide to there is plenty of places to stop and eat!
Make sure all your electronics are well protected from the water in most places you will only get your feet wet but at the falls I was totally drenched!
Last tip... take it all in, every second of it ... If I could go back in the morning I would!
Truly amazing part of the world!

A really nice walk up the canyon for those who are in for a bit of fun! The trip itself takes everything from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depends on how fast you want to go, and how fast you are able to go ;)

At first it's at nice walk, a bit jumping from stone to stone to get over the rivers, but the further you get up, the harder it gets, it's great for kids down to 5-6, but some areas might be a bit steep and scary for them. Two places in the canoyn you also have to climb up ladders. But I've had my dog with me all the times I've been up there so no problem if you know whatis waiting for you :)

Bring good shoes. Be careful if it has been a lot of rain lately, then it can be too much water in the river. You can park the car at the downhill ski slopes and walk 600 meters west to find the ravine. When you after about an hour has reached the top, then you can walk down the ski slope to your car.

Have good shoes when you walk here, would also recommend a bottle of water. You can either walk in the Kjøsterdjuvet og on the hill beside it, both of them lead you to the top where you will see gamledammen.

If you are looking for something a bit more exiting than the normal forest trails, this is perfect. It is an easy trail, but with some jumping from stone to stone and some light climbing.

Climb the canyon from bottom to top. Dangerous during spring, as the book becomes a waterfall. Children under 7 not safe. Elderly not safe. No place for move restricted.
