About
Blaafarvevaerket, or the Royal Cobalt Works of Modum was established in 1773 for the extraction of cobalt ore from the local mines in the surrounding hills. Today Blaafarvevaerket is one of Norways best known tourist attractions offering historical insight into the extraction and production of cobalt, guided tours of the mines and surrounding area and annual art exhibitions. Other attractions at the museum are the Theodor Kittelsen museum. The artist that created the troll as we know it! Children's Farm, several shops and eateries makes us a complete destination for all travellers. The museum and surrounding area is a popular tourist destination in central Eastern Norway with the Vikersund Ski Flying Arena, the worlds largest, and several other destinations for active tourists near by.

Please keep in mind that there are two parts/areas of this attraction. I am reviewing the Historical Mine Tour that lasted about 90 minutes. We had a guided tour of the Clara Mine - we took the Norwegian Tour, they also had a tour in English as well. Ask about this at the ticket desk. This museum has been awarded the Best Museum in Norway in 2018! Our guide was Excellent and full of information and stories. The mine is cold and they provide warm jackets and hard-hats. There is a section with a glass floor that you can look down to the bottom of the mine on. There is a swinging bridge, long tunnels, some displays, etc. Before entering the mine, there are several buildings one can look around in on your own, a snackbar with good coffee and small Meals, an art museum, a tiny gift shop (go to the other location if you want to buy a variety of gifts) and beautiful views. There is also a children`s tour for kids about 4-10; additionally there is a considerably longer Tour that includes an even deeper mine. (If you have all day make sure you drive to the other part of the museum which is about 8 kilometers away. It has displays of items made of colbalt, a petting zoo, more of the museum, a restaurant, etc.)

We were here once when the children were small, but the mine has really developed since then. There are more mines open and more information about the life and history around the mines. The new hanging bridge inside the mine was really cool. The guide was fantastic albeit the information was in Norwegian as this is pre-tourist season. There are different tours for different levels and lengths. Wish we had received more information when purchasing our tickets but the woman behind the counter didn’t ask which tour we wanted. We did the Clara Stoll tour which lasted over an hour and was really enjoyable. There is a longer tour so now our 18yo and 21yo want to go back this summer and do the longer tour. I call that successful when they find it interesting enough to want to return. We ended the trip at the Colbalt Store in the valley by the river. Get the waffles at the shop at the top of the falls! Worth the wait!!!

A good place to visit for a few hours . You will visit the mines and it is a bit cold about 5 C so everybody uses the jackets provided and the helmets in case you hit your head .
Inside watch out for the glass ceiling ( quite safe ) and you will have a marvellous view of the rock .
After the tour of the mine you will see a demonstration of how blue pearl cobalt is made from the gray to blue .
After that you can walk around the site , see the old railway tracks and admire the stunning views .

I work in the historical mine tour industry, so I have done quite a few different tours over the years, and this tour will take some beating! My guide Lasse was informative, accommodating and engaging, and answered every question I had on my 3+ hour (I believe it's their newest tour available but I'm not sure of the name) tour. The workings of this mine is amazing and extensive, and my tour gave me a excellent look at the history, geology, and methods used throughout the mine's life. We used ladders, climbed over uneven ground, got dirty, had easy walking sections and saw a variety of both wide open stoping (like a cave/void) and smaller more confined spaces. I'm 5'8", and I could stand the whole way, though some areas it was a little more cosy. I will be definitely recommending this tour to everybody I can even if they've done other mine tours before, they will still find it interesting. Thanks Lasse!

This tour is for adults and was held by a very knowledgeable guide. I brought two grandsons, aged 7 and 12. The older boy very much enjoyed all the information and learnt a lot. The younger also enjoyed the tour but found some facts difficult to understand. We all really enjoyed the swing bridge over one of the mine shafts and also standing on the thrilling glass platform!!

I also recommend the children's tour for younger children and will bring the 7 year old on that one later.

The tour for an adult costs NOK 195. The children cost NOK 120 each. Money well spent!

I recommend visiting this to everyone. Such an incredible history. Visiting mines, the ability to see what did with bare hands - stuck in my head.
Tours available in Norvegian and English. Our guide was very pleasant and keen on answering questions of the group.
Mines are surrounded by beautiful nature. There is also museum and cafe with great food. I highly recommend visiting this place.

It was extremely interesting but would have not been as informative if we did not have a Norwegian speaker with us as the guide said we were outnumbered and so he would talk in Norwegian. It would be useful to have a written translation into other languages to help with this.

We decided to spend here our last day in Norway on the way back to the airport. There is a first free area, very easy to reach, with a waterfall and a little manual ferry which you can take to cross the river by yourself. I also visited the Kittelsen museum, with is 8 km far in the wood, but the road signals are clear. It is small, but worthwile if you are interested in nordic folklore

Lovely little place in a beautiful setting where kids can roam free and enjoy the adventure. The little animal farm is great for the kids (and I hope the animals don't mind...) plenty of space and equipment for BBQ and picnics, beautiful environment and history.
The waffles at the top of the walk is well worth it!!
