The area
Address
Neighborhood: Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theater, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighborhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicenter. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighborhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
How to get there

I waited a long time before giving an honest review about our experience with Escapology Vienna. At the heart of it, I wanted to be fair and not let either the frustration we felt in the room affect the review.

We booked the room during a short getaway to Vienna. Having played another ER in the city, we found ourselves longing for a new game. So we ended up booking the Free Lili game with Escapology as nothing else seemed to be available elsewhere.

First of all, the website indicates clearly that the game can be played in English, which was important as, while I have lived and worked in Germany, my German is a little rusty. Besides my partner doesn't speak a word of German! So admittedly, it was a little odd to be greeted in German by the game master, who confirmed he knew we were coming.

He then disappeared to prepare the room, leaving us in the reception hall for 10 to 15 minutes. In his defence, he was on his own so nobody could have stayed in the reception area to keep us company. But, as a player who's booked ahead, you expect the game master to have prepared the room.

I'll give a factual review of the room to try to help future players to understand what it's like without discouraging those who might like it.

Decor: The first area you access seems pretty basic at first, which is probably the result of having a huge first room that has only a small number of puzzles. The aim is to get into the lab, which is the 4th area of the ER. However, you'll find that the elements are realistic enough for a lab theme – special bonus for the inclusion of lab coats and further protective items! As for the lab itself, the owner has put a lot of attention to scientific equipment and details (that includes a real lab machine, but shhhh I can't tell you more about it).

Puzzles: I'm divided about the logical flow of the puzzles. Some specific elements are exactly what you can expect in a science lab, especially around lab-related procedures and regulations. But other puzzles lack a natural flow. Indeed, while the narrative insists on genetic experiment (you have to save Lili from a genetic experiment), you'll find that no puzzle can be solved using biology or genetics. (there are relevant props in the lab, not that you need to be an expert in those fields to finish the room but it would sure help). In fact, the main puzzles use a variation of physic and chemistry clues (which wouldn't be an issue if the game itself wasn't so much set on a genetic theme; but from the point of view of someone who's chosen the game based on the genetic description, I felt some puzzles a little irrelevant). Besides, you find yourself unlocking devices in room 1 as part of early puzzles that should only be used in room 4 (and believe me, it's completely unclear that they should not be used at the time you unlock them)
Most puzzles are code-based but you've got also some fun interactive puzzles too.

Red herrings: Yes, plenty, but some of them are the result of a lack of beta-testing from the owner's side. An example is the 'do not touch' sign on a machine that you are supposed to use to save Lili. The sign seems to relate only to a tiny element on the machine, but for players, do not touch genuinely means stay away from the whole thing. In short, be prepared to be confused and waste a lot of time over it.

Clue system: Most clues appear on a screen, which is helpful. However, when the game master is unsure how to guide you further or doesn't have any automated hint to help, he can also come into the room.

What happens if you don't save Lili? You can buy additional time. We didn't because there was no credit card facility and I was running out of banknotes.

Language: Technically, the game is designed for both English and German speakers. However, while some clues within the room are bilingual, the game master wasn't... which means that you get your pre-room story in German or you get a summarised version of it in English.

Game master: Ultimately, the game master is friendly and he tries to help you as much as he can.

Overall it wasn't our favourite room. However, I think it only needed a few tweaks to make it on our top list.

Wow that was perfect! it was our first time to play Escape Game, and we chose the tomb of Tutankhamon. We had so much fun. The room is very beautiful, we were like in a movie. Everythink is well thinked and well done. It is not needed to speak German, a little english is enought
Thank you very much, we had a perfect evening!

We visited Escapology Vienna again to try their new escape room, Free Lili. It proved to be a good choice again. Full of high-tech solutions, tricky puzzles and the venue is just like a real life laboratory.

Shortly - worst escape room which my team and I have been playing (we played app 30 escape rooms till now in several countries).
From the beginning it started strange, since although we booked the term in advance, when we get there, hosts seamed very surprised to see us and we had to wait for them to prepare the room.
Although it was nowhere stated that speaking and understanding of German language is mandatory to play the game (and we also booked room in English) it turned out that without knowing German it is not possible to play the game, since puzzles were in German.
There were only 2 logical puzzles in whole game and all other was just pixel haunting in sand. Moreover, during introduction, game master specifically gave instructions that we do not need to crawl on the floor to not get dirty, which turned out not to be true, since all items were dig in the sand.
So basically game with great potential and very interesting and grateful theme turned out to be complete failure, so would never recommend it.

After reading the reviews and praises by some players I wonder if I've been to the same place as others?! So much potential, so little delivery! Way too little riddles and brain teasers! Then of course, there's no accounting for taste, this room wasn't my cup of tea.

In a field where many compagnies provide similar experiences, here is one on top of the pile. We had the pleasure of investigating the hidden pyramid of the 8th district, a real immersive hour of fun. In a total dark egyptian site, with a lantern as a companion, a path full of observations will guide you to the choco....to the treasure. Great place and staff.

We played one room escape game at Escapology. It was the Tomb of Tutanchamun. The room is simply awesome and amazing. As we were in a movie. The game is very exciting and and there was a surprise at the end. :)
The staff were very friendly here too. The place is very nice, clean and tidy.

I hope we can try the other game soon.

This was or third escape room but we can already tell that it's not like the others, because it is not just a room. Also the whole premise was very clean and there were lockable wardrobes and mobile charger stations.
Inside the rooms it was a bit hard to see some important parts, since the lamps we got were really atmospheric, but not very bright. Also we didn't really know if the game is over now or if there would be more to explore. Maybe the staff could elaborate more on that in the beginning (not that we finished early, but still). However, we really enjoyed the experience and it was an awesome afternoon! Would definitely come back.
