Routes are fairly intuitive, network map makes it pretty easy to understand how to use the U-Bahn network. It is a good system, one that is easy to use if you are at least vaguely familiar with large city metro systems. Tickets can be purchased at self-service machines or through the WienMobil app that you can add to your iPhone prior to visits to the city. Rides cost (€2.40 per adult) and are good for one hour from the point of purchase. There are 24, 48 and 72 hour tickets available as well. You can use tickets for combined U-bahn, local buses and tram rides as well.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023
- FLnurseERBoca Raton, Florida5,621 contributionsSenior rate ticketsGreat system, efficient, clean and fast, on time. Wonderful service at the wiener Linien office at the Wien Hbf, helpful staff that communicates in English well. Senior rate for tickets were very reasonable €1.50 single / €3 return ride. We planned to just make 2 rides per day, all day tickets would have been more expensive. As is, I was able to return unused tickets for a refund minus 10%, since our hotel gave us all day tickets gratis. Yes you have to validate you ticket prior to boarding, the first time we boarded the tram without prior validation, but we found a small validating machine at the very back of the tram.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 7, 2023
- Ben FBloomington, Indiana1,821 contributionsHow You Gotta Get Around ViennaIt’s not my favorite metro system out there, but I appreciated how extensive and helpful the metro was for me in Vienna. It got me everywhere I needed to go as a wheelchair user, and 95% of stations are fully accessible. Only one station I tried to go to was closed for maintenance, and it was no problem. I didn’t find it too confusing. I always felt safe and comfortable while riding. It’s a must for time-conscious and budget-conscious travelers!Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten May 19, 2024

The Vienna U-Bahn is very comprehensible. Tickets are 2.40 Euros for any length of journey on the network, and tickets can be purchased from machines at any station. It is best to have some change or a 5 Euro not maximum, as larger denominations will not be accepted by the machines.

Extremely well organized and efficient. The maps and the signs are very easy to follow, we particularly liked the way the stations that can be reached from the two platforms are signposted. You can buy your tickets ate every U-Bahn station, do it before you pass the little machines in which you must validate your ticket before starting your journey. U-Bahn can take you practically anywhere in central Vienna, the stations are not too distant from one another and the trains come in every 3-4 minutes.

The U-bahn system around Vienna is very easy to use and connects easily at different stations to other public transportation options such as the tram, bus and S-bahn. There are a few connection station to the main railway network too. It is also very affordable especially if you get the different day card options. Best is that they have a night service which is very convenient as you will never be left stranded at night.

The Ubahn is exceptionally efficient, it runs on time is easy to understand and is generally very good. Sadly I was knocked over by a local person on my way back to the airport. I was on a descending escalator observing the correct ettiquet. Ie I was standing on the right and my suitcase was behind me. This lady bumped into a person 3 behind me, then my cousin with whom I'd travelled and then knocked me right over. Not once did she apologise or even stop to help. Several other commuters did help which was lovely, it is a good thing something like this won't put me off but I do think people should always be aware of who and what is around them. I was quite scared at the bottom as I thought the maching might injure me, fortunately it didn't and I travelled on to the airport. The following day I was bruised and had pain but I managed that with medication. Sad but I can't give it the full 5 as a resident let it down.

We bought a 3 day travel card, at a cost of just over €17. It can be used on all the different public transport systems. Just validate it in the machine before first use then that’s it. So much easier than our London Underground system, where you have to keep putting your ticket in the machine. It’s an easy and straightforward system. The trains are always on time and they are very clean, as are the stations. We got around the entire city using this form of travel. No hassle.

We booked a 3 day pass via Get your Guide and this enabled us to use the trams and tubes free of charge during that period. Well worth the money and ease of access jumping on and off the trams and tube. We stayed on the outskirts of Vienna with a short tram ride into the centre but used the tube to visit attractions all over the city.

Vienna's public transport system is wonderful, simple, efficient, and unusual. I think it's the best one I have used anywhere in Europe. Within the city, there are subways, trams and busses, and we used them all. It's unusual because you don't need to go through any barriers either getting on or off, even on the subway. If you have a paper ticket, you do have to validate it when you get on whatever you have gotten on to, but if you have a pass of some sort, there may be no validation at all, depending on the type of pass.
You are still expected to buy a ticket, and there are conductors who may check if you have a valid ticket. We rode the system many times, and didn't see any checks. There are a variety of passes you can buy. We bought two 7 day passes online, which had our names on them, and their dates of validity. We rode many times, and never had to show them to anybody. We bought them on bought them online before arrival, and the price for each was about the price for a 10 minute taxi ride within the city.

We purchased a 24 hour ticket which entitled us to unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for the day. These all operate frequently and efficiently across the entire city. Purchasing and activating our tickets from the self service machines was straight forward. There were boards clearly showing departure times, platforms and destinations, however, locating the actual platforms on the U-Bahn was sometimes confusing. Locals were helpful if they understood English! Public transport in Vienna is cheap and definitely a good way to get around especially to attractions outside the city centre.

I've taken subways all over the world, and this one is exceptionally clean and easy to maneuver. There's really no reason to pay for an Uber or taxi if there is a U stop nearby. You can buy single ride tickets or by time, such as 24 or 48 hour tickets. THey are good for subway, bus, and tram. Highly recommend!

The Vienna U-Bahn is very clean, goes just about everywhere and runs like clockwork. We bought a week-ticket online at Wien Linien for 17 euros, which was an exceptional deal and includes buses, too. I can't recommend taking the U-Bahn highly enough!

I'd like to purchase the Wein mobile digital 72 hour ticket. How does that work for validation? Can I set a time for the ticket to start? I'd love to be able to prepurchase this and have one less thing to think about.
Thank you!
Written January 31, 2023
Hi Mercerbleecker,
When you purchase the digital travel travel ticket you can choose the time and it will be valid until the time, it’s very easy as you can purchase from the station or via mobile app. Hope this helps your preparation and enjoy your time out there.

Want to get the train from Vienna Airport into Central Vienna and then use our 3day pass. Understand we have to buy another euro1.80 ticket to the city limits - anyone know what this station is called please or how it can be found out?
Written February 16, 2020
'This station' - which station?
You can go to Wien Mitte / Landstraße and then change to metro, or any other transport.
But if your hotel / apartment is closer to the airport, you needn't go that far.
I asked Google maps when I was there last month, makes life much easier

Ι had chosen the daily 24 hour ticket which starts the moment you validate it for 24 hours.. there is also the choice for 3 days or a week. In any case , whatever you choose is very cheap and very convenient...
Written December 14, 2019
Hi, I would like to know how to validate tickets to make sure we are travelling using the correct documentation. Are the blue boxes found everywhere for ticket validation? Also, if purchasing the 72hrs ticket, do we have to validate it only once, or for every trip? 3 year olds get on free?
Written August 1, 2019
sorry for the late reply. Hope it is still relevant to you. You only need to validate it once at the start of the first journey. The ticket is than valid for subsequent journeys within the period you purchased it for.
Written August 26, 2019
The weekly ticket u have to validate once only when u buy or every single day of use u have to validate?
Written July 12, 2019
You have to validate the week ticket only the first time you use it (in blue machines at the stations) and than it is valid till Sunday.

The trams are close to the the undergrounds?are they easy to use?
Written July 12, 2019
Yes, wherever there is a U-Bahn station below there is a team or bus station close by above. Vienna"s public transit easy very easy to use. But it might make you feel more at ease to get a transit map at major U-Bahn stations, like Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz, etc. You can buy tickets at those same places or at almost every Tabak-Trafik. These are the places where you can buy cigarettes, newspapers etc. Depending on how many days you plan on being on Vienna you would buy the tickets accordingly. They are valid for tram, U-Bahn, and Buses. You only need to invalidate them once at the start of your travels. Enjoy your trip to Vienna.

We are going from tue till sun would someone tell me if the week ticket is ok?
Written July 11, 2019
Yes, the week ticket is OK, it's the cheapest for such a duration. For your info: the wek ticket is valid from Monday 00:00hrs till SUnday 23:59hrs for metro, tram and busses in the Vienna city area (Kern Zone), not the metropolitan area.
Written July 12, 2019
Hi can any one explain to me how to use the weekly ticket pls ?
Written July 10, 2019
At the first station were you are going use the ticket validate it first (at the blue machines in the metro station) and then it is valid and you may ride whatever public transport means.
