I have done escape rooms in the U.K. but this was my first in Vienna. We played Going Underground and it was FABULOUS!
The games master, Oliver, was obviously very experienced and this showed in the way he reacted with very subtle clues but only when we asked for help. Exceptional member of staff.
No spoilers but there was one particular item that all three of us struggled with, it really taxed the brains.
I would highly recommend this experience and having read many of the excellent reviews I can only conclude that the author of the critical one was herself having a bad day.

Played the second instalment of the English language version of the online game ‘Beneath Vienna’ and had a great time. The premise was engaging, the puzzles were challenging but not inaccessible to anyone who has never done this type of thing before. We have played the first instalment and, although that is a good thing to do, it is not essential to enjoy this game fully.
Well done to the creative team who put this together and we look forward to any other games they will produce in the future.
Next time we are in Vienna we will definitely visit their escape rooms!

We did 4 rooms with Crime Runners - one at the Hernalser Gürtel location and 3 others at the Maria-Theresian Straße.

We took my best friend who had never done any escape rooms prior to this. My daughter and I had done 111 rooms when we did the first one called Going Underground.

Going Underground is an incredible achievement. Tunnels, strange areas, and just a load of fun. If you are in Vienna or visiting and have time, you should definitely do this room. The plot is that there are tremors below Vienna and a WW2 bomb is suspected. You are to go down and investigate. I will say no more because there is a super fun plot twist and I don’t want to spoil it. This was the best room of the 4 but it ranks right up there at the top. This room needs at least 3 people. 2 cannot physically do it.

The other 3 rooms were in a different location closer to the inner city near the Shottentor. These 3 rooms are a trilogy each connected by the same person throughout. They were well thought out and had some incredibly cool elements and unique puzzles. The last room has to be done by at least 3 people. 2 cannot physically do it.

What says the most about these rooms is how much our friend enjoyed them. He was totally immersed (as were we) and he loved finding solutions to problems before us - he felt he would be useless, but he in no way was. He was definitely a heavy-hitter contributor.

And so sorry to leave this for last, because as with any room, it’s the Game Masters who make the room. We had Ulli for Going Underground and Lukas for the trilogy. These were incredibly awesome and friendly and really helped us a lot with good hints, both when asked and volunteered to us when we needed it. Some puzzles did need some help and we were not prideful. If you’re doing rooms and are stuck, remember that clock’s a’tickin’ - every bit helps.

Very dynamic. Good/interesting puzzles. I recommend 4 players. You can easily finish the room in one hour.
But because of the game master, experience wasn't that good. He was lacking energy, no motivation for anything, no enthusiasm, spoke too quietly, gave clues way too early. In the beginning he was reading the story for the room from a piece of paper - I would expect for him to know the story by now and tell it with his own words. Because what he was reading, we can all read it from a prospect or online.
In my experience the game master is as important as a room, so i was quite disappointed in him and consequently with the whole experience.

Hello Ajda, we are glad you liked our game - and sorry for your Game Master experience. We agree a good Game Master is as important as playing a good room. They are normally fully invested in making sure to give our players the best experience possible. We'll make sure this won't happen again and are sorry for your inconvenient experience. Could you write us an email to info@crimerunners.at so we can take a look into that matter? We really want to learn what went wrong so this won't happen again and are sorry for your inconvenient experience.

We were a group of three and did the first chapter of crime runners. We had so much fun and the story was so well thought that we booked immediately for the next day (chapter two). Great effect, great story and great team!!

German and English speaking. Story and the whole game is also in German/English.

I am looking forward for the Chapter 3 (grand final)!!

before I start with the review let me just say: absolutely worth playing here!

Upon entering we were warmly welcomed by the staff, they are really nice! The waiting area is clean, there are some sofas. Toilets were clean as well. The game is on the ground floor (nice touch as most escape games we played before were in the basement)
The game is located almost in the inner city of Vienna near the Ringstraße, easily reachable by public transport (Schottentor), car or bike (a place where you can lock them right next to the building).

To the game itself: Without giving anything away: this has been one of the best escape games we played that far and the biggest reason is: it has a plot.

Don't get me wrong, I love the riddling aspect of the game very much (have been playing some of them so far in different countries) but what I always missed was some sort of story as to why you are escaping or defusing or finding something.
This game has some really nice innovative things concerning riddling and the plot!

You guys really got us hooked and we are excited to play the next game of the series!

tl;dr: if you think about playing a roomescape-game in Vienna, this is your place!

Did the first room as a family of four on our stay in Vienna. We've done lots of escape rooms before including at other vienna venues and although fine this one was a bit underwhelming for us. It felt quite linear so we all followed the one thread which meant at times some of the group felt a bit superfluous. The clues and games were OK and a few nice touches but it didn't feel as exciting or different as other rooms we have enjoyed more. Maybe the other rooms get more complex and interesting.

It is hard to really give a thorough review without giving anything away, but this was the best escape room we have done - and we have done numerous throughout Europe.

It is so unique in the experience and has a great mix of puzzles and challenges and really saw us use teamwork.

We loved this and I would travel to Vienna again if they open another one like this!

Don’t hesitate - if you are thinking about it, DO IT!

If you enjoy escape rooms or just want some fun and excitement, Crime Runners' Going Underground is exactly what you need - and more! 90 minutes of brainteasers and puzzles that will have your heart racing in environments that keep shifting as the storyline demands. The time really flew by as we were fully immersed and enthralled. It really was brilliant fun and I recommend it to you wholeheartedly! Also a great present idea for people who have already been to a few escape rooms, since it is a whole new level! Bring comfortable clothes (nothing you wouldn't crawl on the floor with ;-) )
