Neighborhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

The Schmetterlinghaus is quite pricey for its small scale and lack of diverse species. Most of the butterflies in the house are monarchs and it was difficult to spot anything else. It is a good experience and a welcome break from the many art galleries in the area.

There are many butterflies but usually no Monarchs.Perhaps you saw some of the other 38 species generally on show ? It is indeed a very welcome experience in the centre of Vienna.

This lovely butterfly house is small, but well designed. It's like walking into a sauna... tropical plants and butterflies! The butterflies like eating apples and bananas! Located in Burggarten Park.

Schmetterlinghaus is lovely to visit on the cold Viennese days. At €7 I think it’s kind of pricey. But inside is very beautiful and there are good photo opportunities with many butterflies. I would recommend doing this early in the afternoon. Their hours are restrictive, they’re open between 10-14:45 generally. You can hang up your coats and bags outside because it’s very hot and humid inside. I would recommend going for something to eat in the Palmenhaus afterwards.

I visited with my family and was quite shocked about the amount of dead butterflies, almost half of them dead.

In their shop I bought seeds for a meat eating plant for my nephews, which I then later realized were overdue when I checked the date, I went back there and spoke to the manager who didn't want to give me the money back, he told me to come back if the seeds don't grow, which they didn't do. Since I was a tourist it also was not a possibility for me, so I found this extremely arrogant and rude and I would really not recommend this place.

Hello Elias, you seem to be a bit upset but anything bought in the shop would immediately be exchanged especially if anything was out of date.??We are not quite sure about your review ???

The outside makes it look huge but you quickly realise that this is probably 80% trees etc for the butterflies with only one path around for visitors. We paid €7 per adult and were out within about 5 mins. Saw about 6 butterflies which scared the crap out of us by flying around our heads. It's also not as hell in there so leave your coat on the rack near the shop. Poor.

If you love schmetterlings you'll love this attraction, otherwise...why are you are you going to a schmetterlinghaus? I'll do the negatives first: very hot, very humid, not all that big, expect to see dead butterflies sometimes (hint: they look alive in photographs and hold still better. "Look ma! It landed right on my nose!"). On the plus side it is very well designed with two levels of observation, fish ponds, and lots of flowers. It is packed with butteflies, you will see lots of types. How much time you spend is up to you, I'd guess 15 minutes for people without much interest, 2 hours for those who really like them. Bathrooms and gift shop on site.

As we were strolling in the city center we literally bumped into this - butterfly house in Vienna.
There is a 7 euro entrance fee - not the cheapest and you have discount with the Vienna card - still I would say worth it.
I don't recall the names of the butterflies that we saw but there were a lot of them - several different- bright and less bright colored - hanging on flowers or flying around - so very interesting for me.
Once inside - it is fairly small - but for me it was enough - we spent like 30 minutes there just watching butterflies - sort of relaxing.
Remember the rules says don't touch anything- so just try to respect that- but on the other hand don't get surprised if some butterfly will use you as a support - so they just land on you.
Inside is very humid - so if you have issues I don't recommend getting in it can be difficult to breath.
There is a small gift shop outside - so it you want a memory you can get it there.
Overall a nice experience - I would say you try it if you are in the area.

This was a really pleasant building with lovely plants and not too busy. Not many butterflies, and most were brown with an occasional brightly coloured butterfly. It is only a short experience but nice and calm.

The ambient is very small with few butterflies. The visit won't last more than 10 minutes. The price is exagerated.
