An unusual walk combining ugly places with interesting information and lots of fun. A great way to explore unknown spots in a city. Recommended for visitors as well as for people living in Vienna or nearby. Eugene, the tour guide and master mind of the walk is a role model for infotainment.

This walking tour takes place about once a month in central Vienna (Innere Stadt and Leopoldstadt) and defenitely challenges your classic picture of the city. In 2,5 hours, host Eugene guided us to some of Vienna's worst architectural errors, failed refurbishment and amazingly ugly 80's and 90's design. While doing so, the tour takes an almost philosophical approach to the concepts of beauty and ugliness and the participants are invited to discuss on these, also after the walk with a drink. As a local of Vienna, I truely enjoyed this different view on my city. I joined a midnight (!) edition of the tour, which gave the whole tour a special adventurous atmosphere (but also limits the view on the buildings a bit - you might miss out on the best colour combinations...). Tours are in English, dates for the next tours can be found on their website.
Do not join this tour if you want to see Vienna's classic sights and want more Sissi, Schnitzel and Schönbrunn. Do join it if you want to differentiate and complete your picture of Vienna.

I took part in this Vienna Coffeehouse Conversation on the first day of my visit to Vienna. What an incredible start to my trip!

Before the event began, I chatted with a couple locals (I traveled from the States) and we briefly discussed our reasons for being there, and I actually met one of the ladies I spoke to later in the week for breakfast. Once the program started, I was matched with a gentleman and we enjoyed a lovely meal and a few glasses of wine while we delved into a few of the very interesting questions from the "menu."

I highly recommend taking part in this event. I was able to share a meal with someone I would not normally meet, and the experience of meeting some of the most lovely people of Vienna within the first few hours of landing is not something I'll soon forget.

The tour of & with Eugene (tour guide) started well and interestingly. A “small doll” of about 70 people soon started moving after everyone had paid their 10,- €. Unfortunately, the tour was clearly arranged both in content and length. After 2.5 hours we hadn't hiked 3km, had seen six (!) ugly architectural pieces - one of which wasn't even ugly after renovation - and listened to Eugene's personal life stories for over an hour. Very likeable the guy, but the subject FULLY missed, unfortunately. Overall a waste of time. The seen could also have been seen in 60min, incl. Explanations. Maybe he just had a bad day with narrative compulsion? The way it went with us, it was definitely NOT recommended...unfortunately.

The idea is excellent, the event is fun. You get to experience a Vienna institution, a coffeehouse, learn something worth knowing from Eugene, can have a nice local meal or coffee and meet a new person from a different country. The questions are philosophical and intriguing.

This was my first Coffeehouse Conversation experience as a Viennese local and it was truly enjoyable. After a short introduction Eugene, the organizer of these events, put the people together into pairs and small groups, trying to match locals and visititors being in a similar age group. He then provided everyone with a "menu" of interesting as well as funny questions to choose from. I had the pleasure to share the table with two American ladies and it turned out to be a vivid exchange of both personal and travel related information. I could very well imagine to repeat this experience in the not too far future!

My husband and I attended one of these events and enjoyed it very much. My husband really hit it off with his conversation partner and they still correspond by email. I didn't think to exchange emails with my partner because I didn't think we had very much in common, but later I regretted it. It was a stimulating and interesting evening learning about what life is like for people we'd never have met otherwise. Everyone was friendly and the food was good too. I wish I could go to one of these in every city I visit.

My wife and I joined the Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations as "locals" and each (at different tables) of us had a very enjoyable evening - discussions about life as such, life in Vienna, etc. We enjoyed dinner and had nice conversations on the topics on the "discussions menu" and other issues. Interesting evening and something I would definitely recommend for travellers who want to get another insight into Vienna and its people.
