I must admit, in coming to Vienna I had high hopes for the cuisine. Unfortunately these were dashed by hotel food that was mediocre at best and tourist spots close to all the sites we visited. I was about to leave Vienna not comprehending what all the fuss was about with the food...
That is until we met Brigitte and Roland. They are not tour guides. They are locals with a passion - they want everyone to enjoy the food they love in the places they love to eat. Meeting them in the center of town (with Roland holding a sign with a couple of forks on it) we proceeded to enjoy a wonderful culinary and social experience. It's not the over-the-top haute cuisine gastro-trip some may desire - it is instead a down to earth, delicious taste of what Vienna's culture offers at restaurants that are off the tourist track and which cater to locals. This is as close to having friends in Vienna who take you out to dinner, except you are enjoying a number (5) different locations, each with their own ambiance and specialties.
Brigitte and Roland are a pleasure to spend time with and they give the experience that authenticity that a tourist cannot achieve on her/his own. Their explanations and descriptions and their passion make the courses not only come alive but add the personal dimension that is so much an integral part of a meal. The fact that between courses there are short walks between venues not only helps the digestion but it also enables one to see some of the parts of Vienna that we would never have realized were there.
In any event, this was our favorite affair in Vienna and although we had wonderful guides and were impressed with the city and its history, The Vienna Food Walk is our #1 suggestion for anyone going to Vienna.
Don't miss it!

My wife and I participated in a food tour last Thursday night. We met Roland, our guide, just a few steps from our hotel in the inner city area of Vienna. There were 8 people total plus Roland. This is just the right size for a food tour. Everyone was able to get to know each other over the course of the evening. We had 2 couples from England and another couple from Israel. My wife and I are from the U.S.

Roland is a very warm and friendly person. He likes to talk and loves food. He took us to 5 different places and they were all great finds—places we never would have found on our own. We were able to sample all of the traditional Viennese foods, and there was always plenty of food and drink. Trust me, you will not leave hungry or thirsty. As we were walking from place to place, Roland told us important facts about Vienna’s history, as well as interesting facts about some of the places that we were walking by.

Roland did a great job of managing the group, and we never felt pressure to move from place to place. The tour lasted about 3 hours. I highly recommend taking a tour with Roland. You won’t be disappointed.

This tour was fantastic and I highly recommend it, not only for the food but for the feeling that you're living like a local who is justifiably passionately in love with this city. Roland took us to five places to eat for a nice variety of food, drinks, and atmosphere. All of it was delicious and interesting--well paired with wine or beer although non alcoholic is also available--especially with his stories about its history and significance and the region where that item came from. We went from hole in the wall to foodie-chic to traditional and hearty (in the oldest building in Vienna) to street food (sausage stand) to a 'first wave' coffee shop with amazing deserts, then a post-feast walk to some historical gems hidden in plain sight. He's a hilarious and fascinating guy and honestly goes all out to make you fall in love with Vienna in a whole new way. Make sure you come hungry.

Our family of four unanimously thought this was the best experience we had in Austria! Roland was exceptional; he was prompt, personable, knowledgeable, entertaining, humorous, and overall, a great host and ambassador for Vienna. The tour includes five food stops starting with beer and starters, wine and starters, dinner with beer and wine, street food and beer and dessert and coffee. The walk was short and enjoyable interspersed with historical information about Vienna. Highly recommend and definitely worth the money.

We are late in writing this review, as our tour experience occurred last year (just now getting caught up on writing!), but.....

If you are traveling to Vienna, take this tour. Seriously. Roland is quirky and awesome, we learned so much from him in a fun way, and the food stops were so perfect. So perfect in fact, that two days later we retraced most of the steps on our own. To us, aftertaste (literally and figuratively) is what makes us value a tour the most. To this day, we remember this particular tour as a highlight of all of our travels and accompanying food tours.

My wife and I joined another couple, and a family, on the Vienna Food Walk that was hosted by Roland. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The food ranged from traditional dishes, ham, cheese, and wine, sausages, and finished with coffee and strudel. All the places we visited were off the beaten track and we were the only tourists there. Roland was a great host and made us all feel very welcome. Highly recommended.

My wife and I have gone on food walks both in the US and abroad, but the Vienna Food Walk was the most enjoyable ever. There was, of course, more eating than walking, but the sightseeing did give us a valuable orientation to the central part of Vienna.

But the food! Wow. A well thought out progression of dishes that illustrated the best of the Vienna cuisine and filled us to the brim. As advertised, there was no schnitzel on the tour, but we were told where to get the best and most authentic schnitzel in town and it more than lived up to its billing.

I highly recommend this tour and will look back upon it with great satisfaction for a long time to come.

We took the Vienna Classic Food Walk. Our hosts were a charming couple who Introduced us to a wide variety of foods as we walked around central Vienna. We sampled delicious little sandwiches as a starter, on to a wonderful bowl of the best goulash soup. Our main course introduced us to two classic dishes and the best pretzels I've ever had. On to sample a couple of types of sausage, wonderful gelato, and finishing at a coffee house for coffee and two classic desserts. It was a great introduction and we wound up going back to one of the restaurants for an evening meal. Lovely quiet little courtyard setting.
