An oasis of tranquility and breathtaking beauty

A Neo-Gothic masterpiece. It is an oasis of tranquility and breathtaking beauty in the city. Sunday Masses are held in Czech, German and French.

This church was one of the first in Vienna. It is at the top of two sets of steps that led up from the original banks of the Danube river; now diverted away due to flooding issues during Vienna's early years. Built of sandstone and with Freemason references. Not overly large, but then it didn't need to be in the... More

Nice little church with some parts of the building and the decoration dating back to the Gothic era. I spent an enjoyable half an hour appreciating the architecture. They provide info-pamphlets inside in several languages. Also found an old-school phonomat still working :)

Every church in Vienna is original and different from the others. I warmly recommend to visit Gothic Maria Am Gestade, for it's special elegance and nobility. I don't think there is certain fact about the beginning of construction, although the church was mentioned during XII century, but it was officially finished at the end of 14th century. For those who... More

I grew weary of seeing massive churches along with hundreds of other tourists. But when we heard hourly church bells from our rental we discovered St Mary's. As a small community church you can thoroughly enjoy the peace within. St Mary's is a small, community church with a very old history. There are references to this church back to 600AD.... More

The first day we were in Vienna was a Sunday, and while we walked by Maria am Gestade that morning, there was a church service in progress, so we couldn't see much. I made a point of coming back there on a weekday afternoon, to take some pictures and spend some time there. It is utterly splendid, from its unusual... More

this is yet another attractive church in a city that is full of attractive churches. Yes, it looks nice, but is nothing outstanding. Worth looking at if passing but not really worth seeking out

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
