The area

Address
Neighborhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

I had read about this little church, and eventually went to pay a visit during my short break in wonderful Vienna. Most of its settings is a constant reminder of the Knights of Malta, with the prominent eight-pointed red cross prevailing on some of its objects. it was really worth the visit; highly recommended if one is visiting St Stefan area.

Along Kärntner Strasse is The Maltese Church in Innere Stadt, it is an attractive church and is immediately recognisable as it is adorned with Maltese flags. There originally was a church on the site but the present building was built in 15th Century, it was rebuilt in a more contemporary style and more parts added including stained glass windows in 19th Century. The church was restored in stages with a general restoration in 1998. The church was attracting a lot of passing visitors on the day that we visited, it is ornately decorated and is a must see whilst in the vicinity.

You can easily pass this by in the Kärtnerstrasse, although there are banners outside. It's a place for quiet reflection and devotion which is the real spiritual home of the Knights of Malta in Vienna. Good to pop in and contemplate (for those of all faiths and none).

With all the shops on Kärtnerstrasse you might easily miss this delightful little church. We were lucky to attend a concert during the Christmas season: trumpet and organ. It was absolutely exquisite!

This is also called the church of St. John the Babtist. We walked from the opera building towards this busy area where there are many restaurants and happened to see this. This church was originally built around the year 1500. It has been modified many times. It is very beautiful and tranquil inside. One does not have to go out of the way and it does not take that much time to see this. The Maltese knights Hospitallers were Catholic military order founded around year 1000 A.D. and were in Malta for many years.

Anachronistically situated in the busy shopping street of Kaerntnerstrasse, this church actually has a long historical association with the Order of Knights Hospitaller and has been located here since the 13th century.

The church which is dedicated to St John the Baptist, although on a central and popular walking street is easy to miss. Although small and not overly decorated it is most colourful inside and there is beauty in its simple architectural style.

Near the center and off one of the pedestrian street is this very small church,on a simple gothic-romanesque style which is related to the Knights of Malta.
