In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- Peggy RPalm Bay, Florida40 contributionsDefinitely a must see! This is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen, and I'm an interior designer and have taken many art classes that show pictures of great churches. This was amazing. And we had the delight of having a musical presentation the night we went. Worth every penny!Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten November 5, 2023
- BradHong Kong, China174,793 contributionsOne of the Baroque gems scattered around Innere StadtThere are a handful of charming Baroque churches scattered around Innere Stadt including Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church) just off Grabenstraße. The church history dates back to the Middle Ages but the building you see today is from the early 18th-century and is fashioned after the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica but at a significantly smaller scale. The curved facade with towers is impressive, as is its bronze dome. Within you find a round nave, again similar to Baroque era churches you might have seen in Rome. The interior features delightful altars, ornate marble walls and inner cupola fresco that is worth spending some time to view and enjoy. Take a seat and just enjoy the beauty within Peterskirche before continuing onward with other intended sightseeing in this area of Vienna.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2023
- westy54Sydney, Australia12,772 contributionsBaroque exterior design said to be inspired by its namesake in the Vatican. Interior quite spectacular. It is believed that a church has existed on this site since the early middle ages though the current Baroque church building was begun around 1701 and consecrated to the Holy Trinity in 1733. At that time it was the fist domed structure in Vienna. The exterior of the church, which is two storeys high, is coloured white with pale yellow pilasters, entablatures and architraves, the latter which we see around the niches and the windows. There is a portico over the church's main entrance that is topped with a very ornate grey marble monument with three lead statues holding gilded ornaments and implements. These statues represent faith, hope and love. Either side of the main facade are two towers that are three storeys high and have, on each of the first and second storeys, semi-circular niches that hold stone statues (four in total). There is a window on the third storey of each of the towers as well as on the second storey of the main facade of the building. This latter window has a clock above it. The dome is approximately 5 metres high and is topped with a lantern that allows light into the interior of the cupola. The interior single nave has a spectacular array of marble, richly decorated golden stucco, gilded woodwork (particularly the ornate pulpit), beautiful frescoes, particularly inside the cupola and the side chapels, as well as lovely paintings. The fresco of the Coronation of Our Lady inside the cupola is the work of Johann Michael Rottmayr. The high altar is quite lovely and, on the ceiling above it, is a fresco that gives the illusion that there is a second smaller cupola. The altarpiece displays the Healing of the Lame by St. Peter and St. Jon in Jerusalem. There are several beautifully ornate side chapels. On a balcony above the main entrance is a large Baroque organ that was built in 1751. Well worth a visit particularly as it is free to enter - take note Karlskirche.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 10, 2024

Walking through the Graben, we noticed this green-domed church sitting down a side street. This current church building in the Baroque style was constructed in the early 1700s. Both Austrian and Italian artists were commissioned to adorn the church's interior. Beautiful ceiling frescos. Stunning altarpieces and sculptures gilded in gold and silver.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 19, 2024

The building may look familiar as it is modeled on St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The original records about the church date back to 1137. It has a magnificent Baroque interior and is free to visit.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 30, 2024

A nice church very close to Stephanplatz. We went there for a concert and considering prices for similar concerts I think there was value for money. As the concert was at 8 pm and the lights were dimmed we did not have a very good look inside. Still, enjoyed the evening. For more demanding music lovers it may be worth to check the repertoire before going, especially if one expects typical Strauss and Mozart music.

Attended an evening concert in one of a lifetime venue that cannot be replicated. A must see. Careful not to get a neck strain by trying to see all the marvels of this Baroque Roman 1700 hundred century church

This is by far the most beautiful Cathedral in Vienna which has free entry. Photography is allowed. To make the visit to the Cathedral even more special there is an Organ Recital each afternoon at 15h00 for which a cash donation is appreciated by the Cathedral. The recitals are wonderful and portray the talent of the organists as well as enhancing the piousness of this place of Worship. The ornate ceiling in the dome is amazing as is the entire building, inside. It is a must see when in Vienna. I ensure I visit this Cathedral on numerous occasions, each time I visit Vienna.

We went to an evening string quartet performance here with a combination of different music from Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, Strauss, Bach and Dvorak. Absolutely recommended. We were kindly upgraded from section III to section II (maybe as we had a kid with us?) which made it even more enjoyable. The church is absolutely beautiful and not very big so you can probably also hear well at the back I expect. Shame not all the audience knew when to clap.... :) Absolutely worth a visit.

Interior design consisting paintings and sculptures is something completely artistic and professional. It is not a very big church, but a must see one.
Impressive decoration combined with candle light lets you feel holiness of the ambient.

Vienna has so many churches but it is amazing how unique each can be which is what makes them great. You have several Baroque churches in Vienna so how do you make your's stand out. build it in an oval shape and have a dome that rivals the Hofburg. In fact when finished in the early 18th Century, this church was the first dome in Vienna. In addition to incredible marble and gold leaf detail, the church has a gold and silver shrine opposite the pulpit to the martyrdom of St. John of Nepomuk. When I walked in there was a Saturday night Mass happening, but I was still able to see the interior and dome.

he Church of St. Peter (St. Peterskirche) was built in the 18th century in a round shape and is to some extent based on St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
The interior of the church has a richly decorated with stucco and frescoes.
Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.

The Classical Ensemble Vienna play an hour’s selection in this small church. As a lifelong concertgoer, this was one of the most memorable experiences I have had. The playing was superb, the program was delightful, the setting was intimate and the quartet clearly enjoy playing together. I would recommend this to anyone - of the three concerts I attended in Vienna, this was by far the best. Five stars!

We were visiting the antique Christmas Market surrounding the church then went inside. The church is magnificent. Constructed in the over-the-top Baroque style. There are two enormous reflective balls suspended from the church ceiling. You can ride an elevator to the top of the church for some incredible views. We did not hear a concert, but with that venue it must be lovely.

This is a much more intimate interior; I quite like that, in comparison to Schottentor that is right nearby. The outside is nice, but outclassed by buildings around it. I would absolutely recommend coming in quickly, as it is very beautiful and one can admire of the interior more intimately.

How long is the organ concert that is held at St. Peter's each day at 3 pm? I can't find any info. on the website.

What are 5 to 8 attractions I can tour around this place (mostly from outside only). Also how far is Danube canal boats from here ?
Written February 27, 2020
St. Peter’s church is pretty much in the centre of the town, so there is plenty to view. Not far there is famous St. Stephen church, just follow Graben St and you get there. There is plaque column and plenty of outdoor eateries and shops along the street which itself is quite nice. Kohlmarkt St is interesting too. Going this way one can get to Hofburg and its park and a bit further a few museums and towards East the famous Opera House. Stadt Park with its Strauss monument is a good walk East. The park is small (not much to it) but the monument is nice. Donaukanal is not too far North, however the river is a bit further. They have a good underground system and easy to use, that can help to explore places further from the centre.

is this St peters church in vienna and if so what time is mass tomorrow?
Written December 29, 2018
Yes, it is in Vienna and all you need to do is ask your consignor. They will find out for you. If not, just ask someone at the church, the people there are very helpful.
Written December 30, 2018
Sorry, can’t help you as we were there during the week and didn’t attend mass or observe a mass schedule
Enjoy your trip

Hi, Wendy. What would you like to know about this attraction?
There was a recent party to Vienna by a well known Welsh choir - my husband's - and because of flight cancellations we did not go. I would like to have more description/ information of the choir balcony, high up and in front of the organ pipes. The choristers who went performed up there and I was fascinated by their descriptions of the narrow, winding staircase to reach the choir stall. Have you been up there? I'd be very interested if you have and could describe what you experienced? Many thanks if you can, Andy.

We visit outside of mass time, so sorry cannot answer.

Is there an entrance fee for St. Peter's? It seems like most attractions in Vienna charge for entrance, but I can't find any information for this church.
Written December 6, 2017
There is no entrance fee, but there is a donation box, and the extra traffic from tourists does raise costs (like cleaning), so you can "vote your conscience" with what you contribute towards maintenance of the infrastructure or supporting their mission.
