The area
Neighborhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Situated on the Michaelaplatz, designed by Adolf Loos and opposite the Hofburg Palace, it caused an uproar due to its modernity, when it was built 100 years ago. Because the building now houses a bank, one can only ‘tour’ the ground floor exhibition of the history of the building, and gaze wistfully at the magnificent wooden staircase. Very worthwhile visiting if you have an interest in Jugendstil/Secessionist design. The lady at the desk in the entrance was full of information when we asked a few questions.

If you are in the Michaelerplatz you can't help noticing this building - it is a modern building (designed in 1910) and a bit out of place in a Classic Vienna setting. Apparently the Emperor did not like it and did not use the entrance to his palace from this platz! Apart from this "fame" it is rally nothing special and not worth coming to the Platz just to see this - which you wouldn;t

Seeing the simplicity, clean lines and no "frilly details" as opposed to the Hoffburg palace is rather striking. If possible do go inside to admire the beginning of architectural change. The staff inside are sympathetic to but do respect their work environment.

I was looking for the famous and extravagant toilet, as I found the building and did go inside. However, it is taken over by a bank now. Beautiful wooden interior, but that is all. Don't even try to see the loo house.

I was on a walking tour of Vienna and saw this building. The guide did not mention it so I struck out on my own. Whilst I got inside for a far too brief a look. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take photographs inside the building.

This building is easily one of the most overlooked structures in the city. Our guide stopped us in front of it and asked what was so different. We all said it was green. That's only the beginning.

Adolf Loos was inspired by the buildings in the US and built a no nonsense business structure in the heart of the city. He was halted but then allowed to continue when he promised to put flower boxes above the entrance.

Apparently Emperor Franz-Joseph hated this building so much that he kept the windows that faced it permanently covered with curtains.

I really liked this building, but was not impressed by the location of it, since its architecural style is much more modern than of its surrounding. Still, it's not too modern, like for example that monstrosity at Stephanplatz. Also, colours seems to match the area around, so it's not too big of a contrast.

As soon as you step onto the Michael Platz you feel that something is out of place. The Looshaus stands out as it is the only modern stark building in the historic ornamental Michaelplatz. It is historically significant because it was the first step towards modern Vienna architecture which gave a complete break from the Secession style . It rejects Historicism and ornamentation. Because of the lack of window roofing it was labeled as the 'house without eyebrows' by the locals. Even though the architect added some touches like the Tuscan Columns at the base and the flower boxes in the windows to relate it the classic square and the Hofburg Palace, it still irked Emperor Franz Joseph. He was so irritated by this building that he avoided the exit to Michael square for the rest of his life and kept the curtains drawn over the windows of his staterooms.
The building might not seem so out of place now as you can see many modern shops and buildings now but just imagine it being the only structure of it's kind a 100 years ago.

The very first really modern work of architecture.
It was really exciting to see it in person, after so many pictures and references to it.
The space that forms in square in front of it makes it even better, since it allows for contemplation from a perfect distance.
