In wintertime when we reach first advent the Rathausplatz is just looking great. Colored lights in the surrounding trees. A Christmas market in front of the building and inside there is usually a choir singing. You can drink your Gluehwein and have a snack at the many stands. As it is a market there are many things you can buy.... More

Absolutely stunning at Christmas and nice in summer, the Rathausplatz is its council house in which you have Xmas markets and activities in winter and opera in summer what else?

There always seems to be something going on here - And this Rathaus in one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture anywhere.

I was here in 2015 at Christmas (obvious from the title) but is beautiful with the trees fully covered in green and unfortunately I missed the circus that was there. But then leading on to the Volks Garden with the roses out it is just as magical as at christmas.

While walking around the famous Ringstrasse (well worth the walk), I reached the Rathaus plaza. Not only was the building gorgeous, but the whole plaza is filled with seemingly dozens of international food stalls. One night, they showed an opera on a huge outdoor screen...with the Rathaus as backdrop. Amazing.

The plaza in front of the Rathaus was a nice place to hold different functions for the people there. Activities including circus and christmas market etc. Participants could stroll around the plaza as well as the garden areas in the vicinity apart from entering the Rathaus if there were activities held for visitors. Really a nice gathering place for the... More

This was by far the best mart that we experienced while in Austria. My wife and 7 year old daughter loved Rathausplatz and all of the activities going on. I would recommend this Mart to anyone that is lucky enough to get to experience Vienna during Advent.

The Rathaus itself looks gorgeous, but it was blocked by the complex of cheap (or maybe not so cheap?) attractions and stands of fair. I think it is just stupid.

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
