Having waited in line for 30 mins and then another 30 mins inside for the English speaking tour to begin the tour proved to be very disappointing. You cannot visit the State Opera in Vienna unless you join a tour and there was only 2 English speaking tours on the day I went. Your tour group vies for a place among the other tour groups in German or Italian so when one group finishes in one place another is ready to occupy it. So you feel very much like a factory production line. The tour in fact only took in the intermission rooms - the tapestry room and the marble mural room - and then we could finally sit down for a few moments inside the auditorium (having stood in line outside and inside the main entrance hall). The auditorium was impressive especially when you realise the venue is used constantly for 300 productions of opera or ballet every year. My advice - skip the tour and just buy a ticket to the concert or ballet. Or if money is an issue the opera house has a gigantic screen and seats just outside the main entrance!

Cannot recommend this enough - fabulous! So interesting seeing behind the scenes and hearing the history of the Opera House. Actually saw behind the scenes as the stage hands were putting the scenery up for the Barber of Seville performance that night. Great tour guide! So reasonable as well at 9 Euros.

The Vienna Staatsoper is a magnificent and very large building, with an interesting history. Unusually, it puts on a different performance every evening (except the closed season of July and August), which entails vast amounts of work in changing the sets, etc. The tour lets you appreciate how all this is organised, as well as the sumptuous interior.

The tours are very crowded with 40 people in each tour group. Our escort was good except she did not project her voice well enough for that large of a group. The tour was very enlightening and we had expected to go backstage since our adult children had done that the day before. However, they were moving stage settings preparing for that nights performance so we went into the theater seating and watched as they moved whole sets around which was amazing. Either way the tour went would definitely be a highlight.

These tours - conducted in 10 or so languages - are very popular with tourists from around the world. The visitor gets to see this vast building also from behind the scenes, and learns interesting facts about the opera house itself and the many famous conductors and singers that have performed here.
