About
The Raimund Theater was opened in 1893 as a public theater. Since 1987 it belongs to the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien and is the venue for breathtaking musical productions. Currently, the house has to undergo an urgent refurbishment and modernization and is therefore closed for the next months. In January 2021, the theater will be reopened in new splendor.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Mariahilf
Vienna’s sixth district hosts high street shopping heaven and pedestrian area Mariahilfer Strasse. The weirdest local building is probably the city aquarium Haus des Meeres, housed in one of Vienna’s six remaining World War II defense towers, and topped with a rooftop bar that offers stunning views over Vienna and the center. One of the most historic sites in the area is the passageway of 18th century Raimundhof with its small shops and cafés. It leads from Mariahilfer Strasse to Windmühlgasse. For a glimpse into the world of early 19th century theater, visit Semperdepot, the former depository for theater decoration, which now hosts art exhibitions and fairs.
How to get there
  • Gumpendorfer Straße • 3 min walk
  • Margaretengürtel • 6 min walk

I am from Austria
Jun 2018 • Family
Yes I am- but living in the US.. so seeing this musical was a little of traveling back in time... listening to songs, by R. Fendrich I grew up with... including Austria’s second national Anthem... loved the English sub titles for my not German speaking family! Great addition... the show has been selling out for a reason and the standing ovation at the end was no surprise!
Very well arranged, great enthusiastic performers, in all areas - you could feel their joy and energy!!
Just a great evening spend in a lovely setting!!
Congratulations to all at the Raimund Theater

Schikaneder
Apr 2017
A great musical! Superbe music and an amazing mise-en-scène! The story itself is quite interesting and yet unknown by most people. A real musical treat!

Amplified voices!
Dec 2016 • Couples
What little there was to enjoy about Schikaneder, an energetic, relentlessly upbeat and musically uninteresting production, was completely undone by the metallically amplified and extremely loud voices in this small theater. Beware all lovers of song!

lovely little theatre
Jun 2016 • Couples
We went there to see an Austrian musical (I have never been to New York) and I was pleasantly surprised to see English subtitles posted next to the stage. Great actors, lovely setting.

Have dinner at 'The Mill' restaurant before, only a few hundred metres away.

A Night With Mozart
Mar 2016 • Solo
I booked a ticket not knowing what to expect , I saw Mozart The Musical , I speak no German but that did not stop my enjoyment of the production , on either side of the stage there were English subtitles. I found the production , set design & performances excellent. I didn't know when I booked but this was the last night of Mozart. An absolutely great night . The theatre is easy to get to by public transport : Get the U Bahn Line 6 to GumpendoferStrasse leave the station cross over by the traffic lights walk a little then turn left & the theatre is in front of you ; there a couple of restaurants / cafes near by.

Mozart!
Dec 2015 • Couples
We really enjoyed this rock musical about the life of Mozart. At times deeply touching, at times with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, the story comes together really well. The choreography is simply amazing: while the leads are very good, it's the wonderful backing troupe that turns the musical into a truly great performance. The show is in German, but there are several screens with subtitles in English easily readable from any place in the audience.
For the break, there is an option of pre-ordering the drinks to skip the line to the buffet; unfortunately, there is no way to avoid the long line to the ladies' room which is definitely too small for such a large theater, and the narrow foyers get very crowded during the break and after the show.
The theater itself is quite far from the center, so a car or a taxi may be an option, but there are also two metro stations within walking distance (U6 and U4).

Went to watch Mamma Mia
Mar 2015 • Solo
I came here to watch Mamma Mia and I don't speak German. The ushers speaks English. However, I was disappointed that they don't know the theater by heart since I have to move from the original seating they gave me to a different one. The theater in general has a good ambiance. The show did not started on time and you cannot actually drink inside the theater. Also, if you have your jacket on, you cannot take it off during the show if you chose to wear it inside the theater.

The show in general was good.
