What a fantastic room, Beautiful architecture and incredible lighting and an absolutely fantastic concert. It is just a room with seating so don’t expect a cinema or theater experience with raised chairs. Would suggest pay the extra to get the front rows because of this.
Pre order drinks for the interval will save you a lot of time

We took a package of the Palace tour + Palace (Orangerie) Concert from our Hotel Renaissance Wien. From the beginning it started on the wrong note - the directions as you approach the Palace about where the heck is Orangerie office is extremely pathetic (non existent). It was a 90 degree (Fahrenheit) day as the hotel said it is a walking distance - yes it is but once you approach the palace you just don't know which way to go. Then you have take a the voucher from Orangerie and go to the ticket office to get tickets. The Palace tour (about 40 rooms) was fine but simply unbearable weather wise. It is simply contempt that Palace does not have any means for air circulation, ventilation and even cool it to human levels. We got done with the Palace tour around 5:30PM. The concert is at 8:00PM in a small room (not a typical concert hall) - they don't tell you that when you book it. Oh, it was just terrible. Firstly, the concert started at 830PM (June 16th) and it was hot and I mean really hot. Secondly, you had to pay 5 Euros to get the program - well, how are we supposed to understand/know what the sequence is? Never been to a concert where a program is not given. Then in 30 minutes there was intermission which was for 25 minutes. The concert ended at 10:15PM (8:30 to 10:15PM w/ 25 minute break - you do the math - they advertise as 2 hours minimum). During the break the refreshments are priced ridiculously - a water bottle is 3 Euros. The audience around us (we were in Category A - first row) was simply upset and just waiting for it to get over. Some had even been to the concert the day before at the City center and could not stop raving about how good it was. This concert is a tourist trap with no courtesy to audience, the price being paid and the distance from where people have come expecting to "experience Vienna". This is a sad event. Avoid if you can. And I doubt this is one off situation as I read the other similar reviews (unfortunately after the fact). The concert also had huge amount of high school students filling up Category C - again goes to show that if you are a serious concert enthusiast, this is not meant for you.

Dear Mr. S. - Thank you for your comments. My name is Peter Hosek, I am the co owner of the company Image, which produces the Schoenbrunn Palace Concerts. Let me please revert to your critics as following:
1. Direction - in all our printed materials as well as on our website there are all directions very clearly marked. The person who sold you this programme must have given you our leaflat - otherwise you would have had no idea of what you are buying and i assume you would not have bought it. We do not understand what was unclear with the directions and the map of the Palace Area.
2. Heat - this is something we can not control. Air condition in the Palace, which is 300 years old and a World Cultural Heritage, can not just be build in ! This is a very sensitive area. Protection of historic buildings is a very important issue - not only in Austria.
3. Concert Hall - there is plenty of information about our concert hall inside all our printed material. We assume again that you must have seen this when you bought the tickets.
4. Program - I am a former professional musician, performing all over the world. I have NEVER seen a concert venue that gives away a similar programme for free - our programme is a book of 48 pages and certainly worth the money. We always display the programme performed for people that do not want to buy the programme at the entrance to the seating area. Nobody has to buy a programme.
5. Duration of the concert - we NEVER advertise a 2 hour concert ! This is simply wrong and you wont find any evidence either in our printed leaflats nor on our website. The intermission takes a little longer when there a many people and when there is a hot day.
6. Costs of drinks - we are on the same price level as at any similar place in Vienna. 3 EUR for a bottle of water is compareable and certainly not overpriced. Just look at costs at restaurants and/or the airport or in your hotel.
7. ALL venues in Vienna do have the same problem when there in heat wave in town as none have a proper air conditon due to the fact that all these buildings are rather old and protected by the government.
8. Tourist Trap - we host around 80.000 people every year since 1997 and are proud of the fact that we finance our whole production solely through tickets sales. We don´t get any subsities or other governmental support.
9. We support young people visiting classical events and will not stop doing this. Your comment that this not meant to be for " ... a serious concert ethusiast ..." is quite ignorant towards all the young people that love this music as much as people with more money. If you really want to lock these wonderful younster out of our concert, we must say that we are rather speachless!
You can contact me anytime to revert on my comments - All the best from rainy and today very cool Vienna

Like many other reviewers I was tricked into buying the most expensive ticket. When I arrived I was forced to join a long very slow queue just to leave my coat in the cloakroom. It was mandatory and charged. I then queued again to get into the room and find a seat. The place appeared to be run by students. The music was third rate and the ballet attempts embarrassing. I am no expert and so expected to hear at least some well known music pieces (the ticket seller mentioned The Magic Flute). I knew not one single piece they played - apart from the Radetzky clap-along as a finale. At the interval they sold overpriced drinks. When the whole sorry affair was over I had again to join a longer and slower queue to retrieve my coat. This was without doubt the worst experience by far of my stay in Vienna. It should be closed down.

Thank you for your feedback. I would like to inform you that in Austria it is a legal provision to leave your coats at the coat check during events like this. We apologize for the long queue - our ladies at the coat check do their very best.

It all started with the reservation
price that was about 30% higher
than the actual vanue price.
I went there with my wife early
January.
They take you in and out from
the concert place to dinner and back
by foot and outside the schloss
through the freezing night.
Dinner was worse than average
Menu Touristico, very dull and in
the visitors coffee shop.
This was the highlight of the evening since the small orchestra
was untuned and unbalanced with
10 loudspeekers to compensate
which made the voice even worse.
The singer sounded like 2 yolks were stuck in his throat ,the other
one had no voice so I cannot judge.
The dancers looked out of a circus.
All in all a dull cold disappointing
experience.

Dear Mr. Habas,
Thank you for you posting.
I am Peter Hosek and one of the owners of the company Image that produces the Schoenbrunn Palace Concerts at the Orangery Schönbrunn.
First of all we are sorry that you obviously did not have a good time. Please allow me to respond to some of your comments:
1. The price: Unfortunately I don´t know where you booked the tickets - but our prices are internationally published, on our website, on our flyers (which are layed out in every single hotel), at the information of the Vienna Touris Office and at most ticket offices in town. Some of our tickets are sold by internet ticket offices, travel agencies and other companies - they (as in most cities in the world) sell tickets with a supplement which is their handling fee. If you paid 30% more I would highly appriciate if you tell me who the seller was.
2. The restaurant "Residenz" is a fine restaurant and our partner since 1998 - the menues are touristic as we have visitors from all the world at the palace and therefore we need to cover the general taste of the visitors which they try. Again we are very sorry, that you did not like the food. Tastes are quite different.
3. The small orchestra - which we call "ensemble" performs without amplification - the speakers you saw are not in use. They are there for events in case we need to applify a speaker. I have not been there on that day so I can not judge if the musicians where out of tune and unbalanced - But as a musician (I studyed at the Music University in Vienna) I can guarantee that the musicans are well trained and tour with our Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra throughout the whole world.
In winter - as published in our flyers and on our website - due to low tourism season we perform with the chamber ensemble of the orchestra - again I ensure you that there was NO amplification !
4. Singer: Can you remember the names ? Please let me know - we work with many singers and I can proof that they are all hired in several opera houses in Vienna or abroad. Please give the change to find out what happend this evening ...
All in all I hope you accept my apologicies and find my explenation helpful.
All the best from Vienna, Peter Hosek

Absolute tourist trap. The dinner was terrible: pseudo-luxury. The 'concert hall' had no ambience. The welcome was embarrassing with some poor guy who had to try and make merry small talk. The concert felt amatuer. Don't do it.

Thank you for your feedback. We feel sorry that you obviously did not enjoy anything about the evening. The meal is a typical Austrian Dish, the concert hall has a long tradition (even Mozart himself performed here) and the music is outstanding. We hope you will give the Schoenbrunn Palace Concert a second try whenever you come back to Vienna.

I bought a ticket for the Schloss Schonbrunn Mozart & Strauss from an official vendor outside the Orangerie. Here is my honest opinion.
1. The pictures in the brochure handed out by the ticket vendor in no way reflect the reality of the experience. It is NOT a concert hall. It reminded me more of a fancy school hall.
2. The ticket vendor showed many rows per category of seating when selling me the ticket. The reality was that the C category seating was only the last 5 rows in a long narrow hall. So one could hardly see anything. Also be aware that there is no pre-booking of your actual seat, only the category which means a first come first serve basis for seating. And even though I arrived at 19:50 for the 20:30 concert, I got a seat 1 row from the back. Filing in for the seating was also really slow.
3. The soprano on the night - 16 Sept 2014 - was excellent. The orchestra was OK. The ballet and tenor/male singer was really below average. A lot of the time the audience appeared somewhat disengaged. What really rankled is that, in an effort to make us all leave on an "up" note, the conductor and orchestra came back as people were starting to leave for an encore and tried an Andre Rieu on the crowd. In bad taste. I just left at this point.
All in all I would rate this as a low point in a visit to the beautiful, elegant, creativity filled city of Vienna. It is my definition of a tourist trap.

I wanted to choose something really special on our last evening in Vienna and on paper this sounded the works! There were 6 of us and we paid 39 Euro's for the "cheapest" seats but were absolutely reassured by the sales girl that these seats were, in fact, often complemented on their superb position and accoustics - what a con!
We ended up at the back of an elongagted room some 50 meters from the stage sitting on canteen-style unfixed chairs. it was truly awful and we could hardly hear a thing other than the rustling of other chairs being pushed around the floor due to the dicomfort of everyone.
Employees of the venue were constantly walking up and down the outer eisles and their shoe heels were distracting and louder than the concert.
I wondered if the sound was any better towards the front so took my moment to wander forward down the eisle. I was quickly approached and directed back to my seat but I did manage to get to around the centre of the mid-priced (54 Euro's) block - the sound was just as rubbish.
I firmly believe that the ONLY seats worth having from an accoustic and aesthetic point of view would be the 79 Euro or the VIP (95 Euro) block - but for that price, the actual quality of the concert just isn't worth it! They don't play the "classics" (apart from the Blue Danube at the end and a 5-minute hand-clapping session in the encore) so take my advice and spend your money on a proper concert in a proper venue.
To rub salt in the wound, we had parked our car in the official car park outside only to find there was an additional 20 Euro's to pay on exit.

Just got back from this horrible event and saw all negative reviews matching my experience. I have bought 2 tickets from a guy standing and selling tickets close the Orangerie. The guy wanted to sell the most expensive tickets with the excuse that the cheapest were sold out ( that's was not true, there were many seats available during the concert). The concert was poor , audience left before the concert was over. Was a sad experience. Please do not make my same mistake.

Tourist trap!
Not a classical concert at all, paid 55 euros for a mid class seat, and they have the courage to charge 5 euros for the program (wich i didn't pay) and it was a 16 man orchestra with poor dancers in the best andre rieu style, even with a bizarre atempt to make an encore. Plus the accoustic was pretty bad and the hall very hot.
i came to vienna to enjoy good classical music and with this poor concert my desire was not fullfilled. Avoid it at any cost!
For sure the worst concert i attempt in my entire life

It is not a concert hall, it is a big hallway with some uncomfortable chairs, that they "transfer" to a music place. Bad acoustics, poor visibility. No decoration. They charge 5 euro for the programme. Sitting at the rare seats we could listen to the bar noise! The artists were good and the chosen music pieces nice, as well. Finally, it is place for tourists that they do not know where to go for good music, too expensive, avoid it and try something more authentic!

Is the dining at least air conditioned? Now I’m quite worried since it is very hot right now and I know the concert itself will not be comfortable, but I do want to at least dine comfortably. Thank you for your response and feedback.
Yes, I understand the limitations in providing a/c to the Orangerie

Is there a dress code for the concert? TIA
Written December 6, 2016
Dear OxfordRie,
at our Schoenbrunn Palace Concerts at Orangery Schoenbrunn the dresscode is smart casual as our main target group are tourists, which most of the time don't take ties etc. with them on their journeys.
Best greetings from Vienna!

Is it possible to visit Schoenbrunn and have dinner and the concert all in the same visit? I've looked and looked, but none of the sites I've found give much information.
Many thanks for any help provided.
