About
The Sala Terrena (from Italian: hall of the ground floor) in Mozarthaus Vienna is located in Vienna’s historical city center, nearby both St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Hofburg. It was built as part of the monastery of the German Teutonic Order in the second half of the 12th century. In 1781 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in the monastery of the German Teutonic Order. He played several concerts in Vienna’s oldest concert hall on behalf of Archbishop Colloredo, an important patron of the Mozart family. Come and experience Mozart’s spirit at the performances in the Mozarthaus! Visible Baroque influences can be viewed in the well-preserved Venetian late Renaissance style of the interior. The beautiful and expressive frescoes of the Sala Terrena illustrate rich ornamentation and reveal mythical scenes. The selected location provides the perfect setting for an evening of highest quality.

It was fun finding this hidden gem of a concert hall. It is really not a concert hall, rather a magnificently appointed room where Mozart actually performed for the Archbishop. There were only 15 people in attendance. We were seated in the first row; literally 2-feet away from the performers. We felt like we were experiencing a private performance.

The Mozart and Vivaldi performance was unforgettable. All four musicians were amazing . The lead violinist, we found out, had studied in Russia. Her finger-work was so quick and accurate. Oh, the talent and work to be able to perform at this level.

My wife and I are classical music lovers. This experience we will always remember for the music, the ambiance and the overall historical significance

The oldest concert hall in Vienna, placed in the Monastery of the German Teutonic Order. The concert was outstanding. It was a string quartet that played for about 1 hour and 45 minutes, dressed in period costume and they were really wonderful.

We were pleasantly surprised by the smallness of the room with only 6 rows of seats. It made the concert so much more of a special experience. The music was great and it was nice to have a break with a drink. Really recommend.

The other reviews describe the space and location accurately.

I guess there must be different concerts because the one I attended was 1 hr on the nose, 45 mins shorter than what another reviewer noted, although, contradictory to the website, there was no intermission.

I purchase the premium seat group because I used to play the violin and like to watch the musicians. What is not clear on the site is that your seat is arbitrarily assigned anywhere within the first 3 rows.

I arrived for the 6pm concert shortly after 5:30 and was given a 3rd row seat, where I had assumed it was a first come situation within the seating group. I told the person who hand wrote my ticket that I had wanted to sit up front to watch the violinists, and he rewrote my ticket. I then headed to the bathroom and walked around the courtyard for a while, and when I sat down, realized I had been given a seat 1 in from the end so I only had a view of the 1st violinist's shoulder for the whole performance, during which, only the cellist seemed to be paying attention and making and effort.

I would not have spent the money to watch stare at a shoulder for an hour, whatever the acoustics and venue. It was a 10 euro experience for me, max.

If it is not important for you to see the musicians, get the cheap seats.

If it IS important, you may want to try calling before booking.

If your imagination is strong you can feel as if Mozart is present in this tiny beautifully restored salon where he did play in the late 1700's. The acoustics are amazing in what is called the oldest concert venue in Vienna. The four members of the string quartet were very talented and played with passion and love for the music. Each was attired in Viennese attire of the period. It was a very special experience for us very near St. Stephansplatz. IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) monastery housing Sala Terrena can be hard to find. While Mozarthaus manages the concert and tickets -- and it is nearby -- the concert is in a different location at 7 Singerstrasse before St. Stephan's by several streets if you are heading up Karntner Str. pedestrian walkway from the area of the Opera house. Street name is on building and you make a right on Singerstrausse. Sala Terrena on left,mid-block. 2) think twice about bringing younger children (unless very well-behaved) in order to preserve the experience for yourself and others and to avoid distractions to the musicians. It is a very small room and sound carries.

I was sceptical before attending, but I was proven wrong. The venue is small, intimate and atmospheric. The Mozart Ensemble played with verve and enthusiasm. The program choice was a delight starting with Mozart, concluding with a Beethoven quartet. They played with motivation, including the Lento from Dvorak's American quartet. Get there early to position yourself with a good seat according to your preferences. Watching the first violinist coordinate things was marvelous. The room is a little chilly, but that's OK; just take a scarf. Enjoy.

The „Sala Terrena“ at the Deutschordens House – a painted garden pavilion – hosts this music event like in the old days. A quartet does a mix of lighthearted classics for an audience of just 50 or so.
Some two-hundred-thirty years ago Mozart may have played his music her to pay his rent to the Teutonic.
Nicely different from all the other “touristy” concerts in town.
We did it in combination with a nice dinner and later a drink at the Sky Bar. – Beautiful evening with my Viennese husband!

The concert we attended here was completely satisfying, a visual and auditory treat. It is a beautiful venue. Not overwhelmingly impressive like a basilica or state opera, but small and precious (the room seats only about 50 or so). The walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes, and the acoustics so good that every rustle is heard. Fortunately, it was a quiet and well-behaved audience at the concert when we attended. The string quartet, Mozart Ensemble - Wien, played some well-known classical pieces in period costumes (wigs and all). Bonus, it is right around the corner from the cafe, Haas and Haas, perfect for a pre-concert coffee and pie. Yep, completely satisfying.

The 18th century oval frescoed room with a domed ceiling and lively acoustics is a magnificent venue for a talented quartet. The program of 18th century quartets is perfect - heavy emphasis on Mozart. You are practically sitting on their laps. It makes a magical evening. The only problem is finding it. Their website lists the address as Singerstrasse 7. This turns out to be an entrance to a garage. No sign for a concert. The real entrance is on the other end of the building in the direction of Stephenplatz. I have attached a picture of the only sign on the building. Enjoy.

We tried this out, as it was recommended by Rick Steves. The venue was beautiful. I thought the music was wonderful, although I have to admit I am not the most expert. Regardless I was impressed. It is very close to Stephanplatz. But take note of the address ahead of time - Sala Terrena, Singerstraße 7.

We paid 59€ for adult, 39€ for teenager
