Address
Neighborhood: Wieden
The fourth district combines elegant tradition with contemporary style and relaxed living. More than a dozen town palaces and churches such as St. Charles Borromeo have added glamour to a neighborhood known for its traditional retail and crafts shops, taverns, cafés. Wieden is also home to Naschmarkt, Vienna’s largest street market. Many bohemian types have found their way to Wieden: meet them in trendy cafés and bars, shop alongside them for vintage items, enjoy Wien Museum’s and Kunsthalle’s modern temporary exhibitions, and hang out with the bees at Vienna’s most beautiful urban garden, Karlsgarten.

There is no shortage of things to see & do in Vienna, but if you have time after The Hofburg, Schonbrunn, etc you should visit the Third Man Museum. Whether you’re a classic movie lover, an Orson Welles fan or a WW II historian this museum is a must. The artifacts and memorabilia are stunning, and the area dedicated to post war Vienna especially interesting.

If you love the film, then you must visit this museum when you're in Vienna.
Amidst all of Vienna's sights during a conference visit in 2015, this little museum stands out as one of the highlights. It captures the movie and it captures the times.
I was also fortunate to be visiting when they offered a live zither performance at the museum. What a treat to listen to music so evocative of the film!

I had always wanted to visit The Third Man Museum and was very pleased that a visit to Vienna coincided with its limited opening times; these are limited because it is run by a couple as a labour of love not as full time jobs. If you have ever seen or wanted to see the film go to this museum. Even if this does not apply to you-go. It has a wealth of material to do with both inter-war and post-war Vienna. See the Hofburg, the Karlskirche and the Mozart museum as well but make sure you take in the Third Man Museum. You will not regret it.

Admirable collections of things that are connected to the film, actors and much more. You can feel that the museum was created by heart :) We appreciated also the third part where you can discover more about the context of post-war Vienna. We enjoyed it so much and spent there about 2,5 hours.

This quirky museum is a must-see if you visit Vienna. It has a great collection of Third Man and war-time Vienna memorabilia. We went twice, and also attended a zither recital. An excellent experience. (We actually went in September 2019, but it wasn't possible to enter the correct date.)

Located 5 minutes by walk from the U4 Kettenbrückengasse metro station. It is a private collection of all items related to the masterpiece film. There are 3 sections: 2 relative to the film, one describing the context of Vienna after the 2nd world war. Friendly staff who accompany visitors to the entrance of each section and are willing to a small talk at the end. The ticket costs 9.50 €.

We loved getting to know the owner, who is a dedicated and knowledgeable historian of WWII events related to the making of The Third Man movie. Gerhard has assembled a trove of memorabilia and articles related to the film, and you will also enjoy some footage of the movie. It's a must-see stop for anyone going to Vienna, and well worth a couple of hours (at your own pace). We were there in July of 2018, but the time choices did not allow me to list that time.

I have not watched the 3rd Man. It is a movie that was made in the 50’s and was a well-known, interesting, and successful movie set and filmed in Vienna. However, I had literally never heard of this movie before. We visited the museum as part of a group. I expected it to be solely focused on memorabilia about the movie. However, I was so pleasantly surprised and pleased to find out that it wasn’t just about the movie, but was full of information about pre- and post-war Austria, including the impact to Austria, the other nations involved, and touching and true human stories. I was very moved and intrigued by this wonderful and well- presented collection of material. This is a great capture of important history for both Austria and Vienna. I highly recommend a visit.

I accidentally discovered this museum accidentally on this site, when critiquing another venue. This museum does not seem to come up on the official tourist promotion sites.
There were 20 or so film fans who turned up for this holiday (30 th Dec) special opening and I'm so glad I found out.
The husband and wife team were extremely welcoming and charming. The reception area and gift shop was filled to the roof with posters, pictures and memorabilia and there was a great buzz of anticipation. We were divided into 2 groups.
The museum is broadly divided into 3 parts; the story of the film itself, with several sub sections, a room for Orson Wells and an enlightening display showing the pre and post war politics of Austria. The film is not well known in Austria which may account for the lack of "official" support!
We were then treated to a 2 minute clip of the film and free time to explore.
The exhibits are many and varied, including original movie cameras & projectors, posters & photos and memorabilia & scripts from the actors.
This museum is a superb tribute to a remarkable film. I cannot praise it highly enough.

THANK YOU, for taking the time to write this splendid review to promote us.
You are right, we have most of our visitors through TripAdvisor, that is the reason the museum goes on...
Please have a look again and again at our facebook page, so you can find out about our progress. We are still trying to reach new horizons with the Third Man Museum project. :)

I decided to visit this museum during a 48-hour stay in Vienna, mainly because of its high ranking on TripAdvisor and also because it is relevant to my degree course.
I have to start by saying this is probably one of, if not the best museum I have visited in my life. You can really see the passion the owners have for the film by the sheer amount of memorabilia. The owner has a 1936 35mm film projector which he uses to show you a 2 minute clip from the film - he has made a loop of the film rather than have to rewind the reels each time.
There is also a great section on pre- and post-WW2 Vienna which was the bit I found most interesting as it is related to my studies and is an area of great personal interest.
To sum up, this is a museum in Vienna that should not be missed, you won't regret the 8.50 euro entry (6.50 for students and OAPs) because you'll feel you are supporting a good cause, and the museum is certainly worth this money!

We will be in Vienna on June 24th and would like to book a private tour. Is this possible? My parents experienced much of this history and I would like my son to see it. We are coming from London that morning. Thank you!

You can email the museum owners (it's a private museum) about opening outside of their usual hours. It was my mum's favourite film for all kinds of reasons so I felt the same. There is a Third Man tour of Vienna too but we didn't do that one. You will find a lot of denial in Austria (not just Vienna by any means) and talk of "occupation" instead of enthusiastic collaboration. The owners of this museum seem to want to address that as well as being passionate fans of this, possibly the greatest British film ever made.

Hi Gerhard!
I am planning a trip to Vienna in November and your museum is top of my must do list. Are there any Saturdays in November that you won't be open? Any other days that you may be open? My flight scheduling depends on this!
Don't get me wrong I am not obsessed with The Third Man or am familiar with its trivia, I just think it is one of the most brilliant films ever made, is of historical and cultural importance and I frequently have the tune going through my head! I just can't come to Vienna without having the movie in mind and would really like to see your collection!

Hello Marc,
thank your for contacting us!
We booked you for the zither concert on May 02, 6pm.
Maybe you come to the museum already a couple of minutes before 5pm, that gives you time enough to visit the collection, since we start with the concert on time.
Many greetings from Vienna and see you soon,
Gerhard
