A Great Museum.During a recent trip to Austria, stopped by this museum in Vienna and it turned out to be favorite stop on the entire trip. A great museum with wall-to-wall memorabilia, props, bios, and collectibles from the movie. Could easily spend hours here looking at everything and reading everything on display. Includes some really fun exhibits for fans of the movie - including a couple of photo opps that put you in the movie. Along with this entire collection of movie memorabilia, you'll find a whole section of the museum on the real history of the time, which is reflected in throughout the movie. The historical aspect of this museum is fascinating and could be a complete museum on its own. If you are a fan of WWII history or a movie buff, this is an attraction in Vienna to not be missed.Visited December 2022Written February 10, 2023

We knew that it is a personal hobby/obsession of the owners, only open on Saturday afternoons, so only expected it to be small. But it was huge! And keeps growing (six weeks ago they bought a gravestone that appears in the film). It was so interesting and wonderful to listen to the passion of the two owners. We went to watch The Third Man, the evening before at the nearby Burg Kino. This was great fun too and a good reminder about the film.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 15, 2023

Interesting information about post war Vienna is also there as well as newspaper cuttings and photographs along with videos really gives an idea of what it was like during that period in the city's history. Gerhard the museum's owner is very warm and friendly and we chatted for quite a time especially about Graham Greene, the writer of the book and screenplay of The Third Man, as I had been in a film that was based on a short story he wrote when he was alive which he found interesting. Gerhard told me and my husband about his visit with his wife Karin, (she is lovely), to the famous man's grave in Switzerland and also how they got to know his daughter. I can thoroughly recommend this museum, it is a real gem. Also thank you Gerhard and Karin for the recommendation to Cafe Savoy we had a really good coffee and delicious cake there.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2023
- John R2 contributionsPrivate Tour of the Third Man MuseumI took the private tour, which I would really recommend for hardcore film fans. The curator is friendly, funny, and knows everything there is to know about the film and the people who were involved in making it. He also situates the film in the context of post WW2 Vienna. The museum itself is full of genuine memorabilia - posters from around the world, annotated scripts, handwritten correspondence, props, personal photos and items from cast and crew, even equipment that was used to make the film - plus stuff from 1940s Vienna that helps to contextualise the film. You could stay here all day looking at it if you're a person who loves detail. I can wholeheartedly recommend this museum for those who appreciate a labour of love, and for those who like deep dives into classic films. Thanks for having me!Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 14, 2023

It was so interesting and you get to see and hear about important areas of Vienna. Gerhard who takes the tour & has created the Third Man Museum was excellent. It was so easy to arrange before we arrived in Vienna. I would highly recommend this tour. It’s learning about recent history of Vienna and then the Third Man Film. I visited while solo travelling, and loved getting lost in the extensive and enchanting collection. I was blown away by the treasure trove of rare film memorabilia - from Trevor Howard’s original Third Man script with his hand written notes, to letters between producers and writers. This lent a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes world and workings of the 1950s film industry. The museum exudes a passion for cinema which is palpable and moving. - Kevin H1 contributionExcellent tour and museum collectionI highly recommend the museum and the small group tour. Our group of 3 took the Cold War Vienna walking tour. Gerhard has extensive knowledge of the times before, during, and after the war, and he shares his knowledge and his passion for the subject, along with sights that tie into The Third Man. The tour ends with a visit to the museum and its collection of many interesting items from the film. The museum also includes an enlightening collection of items that reveal many aspects of post-war life and struggles in Vienna. We were extremely glad to spend time with Gerhard and that we made the tour and museum part of our visit to Vienna.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 3, 2023
- Susan S1 contributionA must see museumThe museum was amazing! I love the film and it was great to see so many stills, posters and memorabilia. The owners have spent years collecting items and they are lovingly displayed. A highlight for me was seeing 2 minutes of the film shown on a 1936 projector. I could have watched more! Also very interesting was the exhibition on post war Vienna. A must see museum when visiting Vienna. There is no shortage of things to see & do in Vienna, but if you have time after The Hofburg, Schonbrunn, etc you should visit the Third Man Museum. Whether you’re a classic movie lover, an Orson Welles fan or a WW II historian this museum is a must. The artifacts and memorabilia are stunning, and the area dedicated to post war Vienna especially interesting.

An absolute must if you enjoyed the third man film. The very dedicated couple who set up this comprehensive collection of artefacts and information about all aspects of the film have done a superb job. All the staff were informative and friendly. The section which explored Vienna during and post war was especially interesting and the best historical record that we found in Vienna. There is also a good value book which can guide you to the various film locations in the city - well worth doing. Thanks for a great experience, we can’t wait to watch the film again.

If you love the film, then you must visit this museum when you're in Vienna.
Amidst all of Vienna's sights during a conference visit in 2015, this little museum stands out as one of the highlights. It captures the movie and it captures the times.
I was also fortunate to be visiting when they offered a live zither performance at the museum. What a treat to listen to music so evocative of the film!

Vienna offers some of the best museums in the world, but none of them are so utterly surprising, enjoyable, or memorable as this little gem in a lovely neighborhood just around the corner from the Naschmarket.
I had seen The Third Man a couple of times over the years and thought it was a great film. But never in my wildest imagining would I have thought it would make for such an engaging museum experience.
The collection of items and artifacts here is mind-blowing, and so thoughtfully presented that even the most casual visitor is going to be impressed! There is also a full section of the museum that’s completely devoted to documenting Vienna in the years leading up to - and following - World War 2, helping to shed light on the setting of the film.
Beyond all of this, what makes The Third Man Museum so winning is that it’s truly a labor of love for Gerhard and Karin, the couple who created, own, and operate it, all with no governmental or institutional support.
If you happen to find yourself in Vienna with a couple hours to spare, you have to check this place out. As for me, it will be among the nicest memories of my time visiting Vienna. Thank you, Karin and Gerhard!

We had a great experience here with Gerhard at his wonderful museum dedicated to The Third Man movie but also inclusive of all of Vienna post WWII. We enjoyed learning about the efforts of Americans (citizens and military) as well as other allied nations to help rebuild Vienna. So well done. Lots to see, do, hear, experience including a 1934 film projector where you can watch 2 minutes of the movie. Wonderful experience! Definitely worth a visit!

We will be in Vienna on June 24th and would like to book a private tour. Is this possible? My parents experienced much of this history and I would like my son to see it. We are coming from London that morning. Thank you!

You can email the museum owners (it's a private museum) about opening outside of their usual hours. It was my mum's favourite film for all kinds of reasons so I felt the same. There is a Third Man tour of Vienna too but we didn't do that one. You will find a lot of denial in Austria (not just Vienna by any means) and talk of "occupation" instead of enthusiastic collaboration. The owners of this museum seem to want to address that as well as being passionate fans of this, possibly the greatest British film ever made.

Hi Gerhard!
I am planning a trip to Vienna in November and your museum is top of my must do list. Are there any Saturdays in November that you won't be open? Any other days that you may be open? My flight scheduling depends on this!
Don't get me wrong I am not obsessed with The Third Man or am familiar with its trivia, I just think it is one of the most brilliant films ever made, is of historical and cultural importance and I frequently have the tune going through my head! I just can't come to Vienna without having the movie in mind and would really like to see your collection!
