About
At the Palais Lobkowitz, just a few steps from the Hofburg Palace, the Theatermuseum conveys a sense of the history of theatre from the late 15th century through to contemporary experimental theatre as well as the vast diversity of theatre genres, showcased here in temporary exhibitions. Take an intimate look behind the doors of a historic Viennese palace, immerse yourself in the world of the Lobkowitz family and discover masterpieces by major Viennese artists. The opulence of the baroque architecture provides a stunning visual experience from the moment you step into the building. A special highlight of the tour is the Jugendstil painting Nuda Veritas, one of the best-known works by Gustav Klimt. Admire this masterpiece and learn more about its meaning and symbolism. Another highlight is the Eroica Hall, named after Beethoven’s celebrated Eroica Symphony, which was performed here for the very first time.

In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

The title of this venue is currently misleading as there is nothing about the history of theatre at all here except a model of the old theatre before it was pulled down, exhibited on the top floor. In addition, no-one told us when we went in that the exhibition was currently closed........not very impressed by that lack of information.
However, this is an interesting exhibition on the top contributors to the world of dance on the ground floor - in German though. There are notes in the entrance in English so all is not lost! It was interesting to see how contemporary dance was and how the art developed throughout the world before, during and after the wars.....
The gallery on the next floor houses a range of interesting paintings including the Last Judgement by Hieronymus Bosch and a small exhibtion on art and nature by Petra Lutnyk.
The palace itself is nice to see - must have been rather splendid in the days when they had balls there...

When I found this museum I immediately added it to my list. While I’m glad I went, I was extremely disappointed on a number of levels.
I’m in Austria and I do not speak German. This is MY FAULT. But most museums are exceptionally accommodating with English signage or audio guides. This museum offered nothing in English. But still I soldiered on.
The entire first floor is dedicated to dance. Not a favored art form of mine and with no German knowledge I was able to garner little information. But even if I had spoken German, there were few signs r explanations of what was on display. The second floor sits between an art exhibition shared with another museum. Their signage WAS bilingual (just sayin’). And a ballet exhibition which again seemed only a series of photos with little explanatory text (not that I would have understood it anyway). There was a marionette theatre area which had potential but that exhibition was closing.
The third floor was the only saving grace to this museum. The models of theatre types. But without German knowledge you’ll struggle to understand what you are seeing (I was traveling with a non native German speaker and even she had to look up terms). But the models are well done and have very detailed insight to styles of theatres.
I really don’t want a three star review to seem like it’s because there wasn’t enough English. But this site is used primarily by English speakers and it is a significant impact on the museum’s enjoyability.

The museum content is interesting and the architecture is nice but everything is only in German. Very disappointing to see this in 2019

There was one interesting exhibition linked to the museum’s purpose, on more than a century of dance in Vienna, chiefly in the Staatsoper. That would not have drawn us to the Palais Lobkowitz, attractive as it is. Currently it houses several rooms full of art from another museum, closed for renovation. The chief attraction is a triptych on the Last Judgment and the Seven Deadly Sins by Hieronymus Bosch. It exhibits Bosch’ twisted imagination in full force. There are a number of excellent pieces of 16th and 17th century Dutch and German art, including several fine Cranachs, an arresting Vermeyen, and a beautiful floral piece by Rachel Ruys. The exhibition runs for a couple of months more; try to see it if you can.

I attended a concert of Viennese classical museum in the theater upstairs in the museum. The hall only has temporary seats. On the other hand the paintings on the walls and on the ceiling are impressive. Beethoven's 3rd symphony premiered here with Beethoven himself conducting which makes this venue very special

Vienna is justifiably famous for its amazing architecture and walking around the magnificent Historic Centre of Vienna is a great way to see the awesome and beautiful architecture that is to be found in this most beautiful of city's.
We had just been to Albertinaplatz and cut onto Lobkowitzplatz and the first building that caught my eye was Osterreichisches Theatermuseum .
Although I never ventured in to check out the exhibitions on show I was suitably impressed with this amazing looking building, took a few photo's before we moved on.
Easy to locate on Lobkowiczplatz and most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

We went here primarily to see the Bosch painting which is here on a temporary basis. There were some other very good paintings. Without these I don’t think the rest of the museum would be worth the €12 entrance fee, especially as some of it was closed for renovation.

While the Academy of Fine Arts is being renovated, a few masterpieces are on display and worth the effort. You can enjoy Hieronymus Bosch's Last Judgement as well as a Rembrandt and Rubens. Also some of the modern works are interesting. We were rewarded with music as we sat mesmerized next to the theater door listening to a rehearsal of Mozart's Piano Concerto 20 and transported to old Vienna.

Interesting if you are familiar with German theatrical literature. Or middle ages paintings.
The theater aspect was pretty sparse though. And currently, large sections are closed, so for example, you cannot see the puppets.

In the Museum O saw a wonderful exhibition from the collection of Count Lamberg-Sprinzenstein.
The exhibition included paintings by Hironimus Bosch, Lucas Cranach , Rembrandt , and others. It is a small show but excellent quality. It is a must for art lovers. Yona. S.
