We checked out this Christmas Market in January after visiting the Schonbrunn palace and it was quite nice, looked even better as it got darker and the Christmas light went on. Definitely worth checking if you are in the area.

Our second year in this spectacular Christmas market, many beautiful things to buy, wonderful food as crepes, specially those filled with salmon, others ham and cheese and for desert crepes with Nutella, also baked potatoes filled with salmon, seafood, cheese, etc.
At night yu also can listen to Christmas carols, really a great experience.

Over the past 3 weeks, we've visited 8 of Vienna's Christmas Markets and we visited the Schonbrunn market twice. Although across most of the markets, with the exception of Spittelberg, you will find many of the same booths - same manufacturers/vendors, commonly several of the same booths in each market and many of the booths are unimaginative - manufactured toys, common wooden ornaments and beeswax items. However, Schonbronn has a super festive atmosphere with some unique booths, from one of the gorgeous Lebkuchen cookie offerings I have seen anywhere - picture frosted lace over heart-shaped and other cookies - a nice twist from the brightly colored confections that say things like "Ich Liebe Dich." At this lebkuchen booth, you will find cookies from a little over one euro to 20 euro from tiny angels and hearts to large lace-looking works of art. There is also a ceramic artist with interesting tea light holders and lamps in shapes of turtles and cats and more. There are paper star lanterns and lots of options for noshing, from bread to bratwurst to soup and potatoes cooked any way you want.
With the palace as the backdrop, this market is very charming. We liked the children's punch here the best, as it was the right temperature for kids, but we liked the potato wedges here the least - and they were the most expensive of any market at 4 euro.
However, the manger display in the center and the lighted tree is charming, and if you tire of the market, you can stop into the Residenz Cafe for some sit-down time with coffee and torte.
Be sure to bring cash, as with any Christmas market, there is no option for visa/mastercard, but you will find plenty of small items for gifts.
Pros: the lebkuchen booth, the manger, the atmosphere - very Vienna
Cons: Saturdays are nuts - too many people - if you want something quieter, go during the week
Another tip - I am convinced after traveling for one month in Vienna, almost extensively using public transportation and visiting so many markets - the Viennese apparently never need to go to the bathroom. Despite the busy markets, much drinking and merriment, there are few places to potty and the occasional ron-jon is nothing you want to sit on or take a child into - so at least the Schonbrunn does have an accessible bathroom via the Residenz Cafe. Obviously, they prefer that you come in for coffee and light fare to use the facilities, but the women's bathroom has an attendant who awaits a tip (typically 1 Euro), so I feel like if you are paying for the bathroom, use it regardless of whether you stop in at the cafe. Otherwise, you'll be holding it until you get home.

Many Christmas markets are a rip-off, where you pay through your nose for pseudo-artistic junk, watery and sugary concoctions trying to be mulled wine, and bad food.
The Schönbrunn Christmas Market is different, so different that also the locals love it come here in large numbers. I live around the corner and attend regularly every winter. The place is romantic even for people who do are not inclined to call for the resurrection of the monarchy. During one of my visits, snowflakes started to drop tenderly into my mug... even though I really don't like winter, I have to admit this was actually very pretty.
I do not care much for the handicraft articles (cribs, candles, jewelry, toys...), but I do like the variations of punch, the delicious mulled wine, and the yummy food. After two mugs of sweet warm alcoholic drinks you simply need something strong, such as an oven-baked potato with toppings or - even better - a raclette bread, steaming with warm cheese and a lavish amount of truffles.
YUMMY!
PS. There is a deposit of 2 EUR per mug, which has led many people to the conclusion that this is an awesome price for a souvenir mug... ;-)

We visited the palace market as part of a trip to Vienna. Of ll of the Christmas Markets we visited (Nuremburg, Passau, Budapest) on the river cruise, this was by far the most upscale in terms of food choice and the products being sold. If you can get there I highly recommend it as a very good example of a Christmas market that stays away from the kitschy products that you see at other markets.

While visiting Vienna for a short weekend Christmas break, myself and family decided to go to the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market on Sunday.
We had made the decision based on being previously advised that apart from the Christmas Markets, the majority of shops are shut on Sunday and so we maximised on the shopping and attractions on the weekdays and Saturday in central Vienna.
We took the metro from our Hotel to the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market, it was so easy to map the route and only cost us a couple of euros!
For your convenience, this is the easiest way (we found) to get there. From the city centre metro, the U4 subway takes you to the palace and there are two relevant subway stations. We took the one called (conveniently) “Schönbrunn” and is the best for reaching the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market.
Once you get to that station, exit the platform to the west (the train’s direction), and you’ll see the lifts. At the top of the lifts (or stairs), cross over the glass bridge (over the tracks) and keep going straight on to a paved walkway.
This walkway takes you between a car park on your left, and playing fields on your right. After a short distance, you will see a main road and a pedestrian crossing. The Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market is ‘hidden’ on the other side of the road behind some buildings!!
Cross over the road and go right along the pavement. Keep going for a couple of minutes until you reach the main entrance to the Palace courtyard. You’ll see this through the two white stone columns with gold eagles perched on the top – impossible to miss!
The Christmas Market was good – it had a good assortment of stalls at reasonable prices and a nice selection of hot and cold (alcoholic and non alcoholic) drinks. Also, the Schönbrunn Market is known for its limited edition Christmas mugs as they release a new one each year which (from what I understand) becomes quite a collectors piece!
While going round the market itself, there are a lot of mugs in a similar design but with slight variations e.g. a winter scene but some have animals and some have flowers on them. However, the genuine limited edition one is sold at the Visitors Booth at one of the entrances to the Market, the one this year was coloured and quite elegant and only cost about €5.
The other stalls mugs were about €3-€3.50 so it’s worth walking round once and picking the souvenir mug you want and purchasing the annual limited edition mug in addition should you so wish.
Despite this Market being a short distance away from the other ones in Central Vienna, it is worth the trip to get there

Really well organised Christmas Market in true Viennese style. One can take in the aroma of the freshly baked breads, heated mulled wine and fried sausages spread about in the air. Additionally, in spite of my aim to not indulge in freshly baked chocolate chip cookies I couldn't control my urges and ended up getting a couple of boxes.

Right outside the grand Palace of Vienna, stands the colourful Christmas Market in very large space with rows of delightful stuff to see and buy from. Local food, sweets, drinks are a must try for everyone who is visiting and buying fancy christmas stuff at reasonable rates is an additional advantage. The best part about this market is the way it has been designed, in a square block with shops lined facing each other in rows, making it convenient for the visitors to walk easily.
I highly recommend this trip to the market!!

The market as you can probably tell from the other reviews is authentic and fun. It's nice to talk to the actual artisans and see the results of their hard work. One thing I really enjoyed was the fact there are no flashy banners or advertising from major companies (e.g. Pepsi, McDonald's, Red Bull etc.) It's all original which allows you to really enjoy the experience.

Debbie, I'm leaving for Vienna tomorrow. What are the average costs for food, mulled wine and souvenirs from the markets? Is it mostly cash only?
thanks
Written December 15, 2017
Hey Pat,
Mulled wine and punsch were between €3.8-4.5 and each market requires a deposit for the cups (€3-4) they use but you can get that back when you're finished.
Food was usually €5-10 but fairly big portions, we had jacket potatoes for about €7 each but they were huge.
I saw one or two market stalls that took card payments but it was predominantly cash so def recommend to carry plenty with you. The souvenirs ranged in price but I saw some amazing handpainted baubles at about €12 each to give a rough idea.
Also keep your change handy as pretty much every toilet costs 50c each.
Have a fabulous time x

hi.. we are visiting Vienna this November 22nd for a few days. we are staying at the Enziana Hotel. Are we near the tourist spots and christmas markets? Aside from the palaces and museums that i already searched online.. can you suggest any sights and places we can visit around Vienna? Thanks
Written November 15, 2017
Hi.. well not too sure if you’re close enough. We stayed at the city itself at the Rathauspark Hotel which was a lot closer to the sights. Wherever you are, all you need to do is to get into one of the hop on hop off buses. It has several lines and will take you to all the sights even the wineries☺️ we literally had only one day for sightseeing cause Christmas Day was pretty lull. We were able to see the museums and the palaces etc. But like I said if you get into one of the buses it will take you to many other sights. Just speak to the coordinators once you get there. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Dear willibobs0161, thank you very much for your request! If you are staying at the Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn, you will reach the Christmas Market Schloß Schönbrunn after a 15 minutes walk through the beautiful Schönbrunn garden! Moreover the U4 underground station Hietzing is right next to the hotel, which makes it quite easy to reach the city centre of Vienna and visit other Christmas markets.
We wish you a wonderful stay in Vienna and a great time at the Christmas Market Schloß Schönbrunn!

Dear fidelma2015, thank you for your request and interest in the Christmas market Schloß Schönbrunn! From the Ring Hotel - which is located right in the centre - you can easily reach most of the attractions in Vienna (also within in walking distance). Moreover, you can also easily reach the Schönbrunn Palace and the Christmas market Schloß Schönbrunn by using public transport. The nearest underground station next to the Ring Hotel is Karlsplatz. From there you can take the underground line U4 (direction Hietzing) and exit directly at Schönbrunn (approximately 10 minutes driving time)!
For guided tours in English we recommend you to visit the Website of the Viennese tourism office for further information.
We wish you a pleasant stay in Vienna and a great time at the Christmas market Schloß Schönbrunn!
