In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. - smithla71Telford, United Kingdom53 contributionsAmazing placeHad a long weekend in Vienna. Weather was incredibly cold so popped in to visit this museum. Fantastic museum with some great exhibits For me though, the building is sensational. The architecture is stunning and the internal features are incredible Loved itVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023
- ofeverythingpetiteSingapore, Singapore28 contributionsConfused by mix of fake and real taxidermyThe building and its interiors are gorgeous. Crytals and stone collections are impressive; the collection is huge and well curated for anyone interested. Can’t say the same for the taxidermy and dinosaur collection. For some strange reason, the museum mixes man-made taxidermy with real ones so it can get confusing. Would appreciate if they just kept to displaying real pieces.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 18, 2023
- Seeking True QualityEurope4,836 contributionsOur first visit to the Naturhistorisches MuseumWe knew even before entering this huge museum that we could not see everything in it in one visit. On this first visit, we saw the vast collection of minerals, stones, gemstones and meteorites! We also visited the halls that show the history of Earth and the fossils... Those fossils are amazing, especially the size of the bones is mindblowing. But when they are assembled in a skeleton, only then can the true size and ferocity of the animals be observed. We continued our visit to the halls that show the evolution during the last ice age and prehistory. But after seeing the famous Venus of Willendorf, we simply had to leave... Of course, we will return!Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 30, 2023
- Johanna A5 contributionsAmazing! Loved it!It was absolutely amazing! Many many things to see, even my 10 year old enjoyed very much! Wouldn’t recomrnd with small child because there are many satira and the place is huge, you have to walk a lot.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2024
- Ellie1,994 contributionsStunningAbsolutely incredible museum. Not only is it visually stunning but it houses some incredible collections. They seemingly have every species of bird ever located, it’s crazy! Some really unusual ones too. As well as an array of animal species, fossils, and crystals. Incredible! Also has an amazing cafe.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 29, 2024
- intomytripEngland, United Kingdom106 contributions"An Astonishing Museum Experience"This museum is absolutely incredible. Not only is it visually stunning, but it also houses some truly remarkable collections. They seem to have every species of bird ever discovered, including some exceptionally rare ones. In addition to an extensive array of animal species, fossils, and crystals, the museum offers an extraordinary experience. And let's not forget about the amazing cafe they have—it's the perfect place to relax and reflect after exploring the wonders within.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 4, 2024
- CarbonChauvinist182 contributionsA must see? Probably.Fantastic, very rich museum. Should be fun for young and adults. You could spend an entire day there. Plenty of dinos, ice age creatures, insects and such. Some expositions lack English descriptions sadly. Seriously, unless you wanna rush through, make sure you got plenty of time! Funny thing - day later we visited twin museum (Kunsthistorisches), and for some reason that one had AC and this one doesn't. Pity!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 11, 2024
- GregoireMonaco70 contributionsInteresting MuseumA great museum to learn about the whole history of Vienna from the creation to Vienna to now. It was well organised as each section showed a certain timing in history. There is also some activities you can do which are linked to the belief of "said" period. A must to do in Vienna as it free so perfect for families as wellVisited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 20, 2024
- 898frankVirginia424 contributionsImpressive collection in a beautiful buildingHaving visited many Natural History Museums in usually capital cities around the world, I was kind of wondering what this museum has in its collection. And I must admit, it is quite impressive and does match the great museums worldwide. It is also housed in a beautiful building fit for purpose which adds to the grandeur. Being an old building, you must take into account that it does not have airconditioning so on a hot summer day, it is also rather hot inside, especially in parts of the museum that face the sun. Touring the museum will take you at least two hours, but you can easily also spend half a day if you take a bit more time and have a more detailed look on what is on display. Entry is not cheap and no discounts are offered, but it is worth it. You can buy tickets at a ticket office but also easily online.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 23, 2024
- sabina0411Varna, Bulgaria7 contributionsA must-seeThis is an absolute must-see in terms of the richness of its collection. It’s like waking inside an encyclopedia. The building itself is a true marvel. The exhibits are shown in an “old-fashioned” way, however, they’ve tried to make it as interactive as possible in some spots. HUGE disadvantage: there is no air conditioning. Nowhere: not the halls, not the café. On a summer day this takes away all the pleasure from viewing. People were really struggling.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024

Firstly the grounds and building are stunning. The exhibits are good and varied, everything from stones to ant eaters. There’s a nice cafe on site and lots of other museums around it if you want more. Would recommend for couples and families alike. From memory it was good value too, entry was around 7 euros for an adult.

There are so many good museums in Vienna. I was grateful to have chosen this one. The entry way and majestic stairways with enormous murals are visually stunning, I doubt any of my photos do them justice. I tried to wander most of the museum, but it was really my first area, the Egyptian collection that stuck with me. It was enormous with lots of antiquities in beautiful condition. As you may have read, they also have a lovely restaurant on an upper level “under the dome”. The restaurant was very busy even in the mid afternoon and I waited in a small line for service, but it was a great break.

This museum offers one of the biggest exhibitions I have ever seen. It is beautiful and interactive, providing lots of different areas of interest.
It has beautiful mineral and animal sections, but my personal favourite was the human evolution.
What made me an impression was the signs next to some of the animal species saying how endangered they are. This, for me, is very important, as it provides the much needed awareness of our human impact on our planet while being not overwhelming.
Almost everything is in English and I found the audio guide not of much need, although, it provides additional information. Just keep in mind that the audio guide is €6 which is quite expensive.
If you plan to go there, I would recommend to go during a weekday in the morning, as it is less crowded.
Also, it has easy access to toilets + for people with additional needs. And it had a lovely cafe with food at the centre of the museum.

Going to a natural history museum is a really good decision. Offers an excellent exhibit from prehistory to the present. I was amazed by the minerals, to see the origin of life on earth. From dinosaur to the present animal specimens. A special impression was made by the moon exhibition. Negative part was a ticket sales person who does not deserve to work with people. if I did not been persistent I would not entered inthe museum because he claimed that I need to have a PDF version of the tickets purchased online, although the certificate stated that the mobile version was also valid.

In this museum EVERY sort of animals, minerals, stones, insects,... can be easily found. Huge number of specious are gathered together to make an impressive exhibition. The building itself is also a marvelous historical palace in where lots of paintings and sculptures exist.
the most interesting part for kids is the show of dinosaurs which is particularly amazing.

The Natural Hisyory Museum in Vienna is a great place to spend a few hours. It is a lit bigger than expected and covers a few floors. There is a great collection of minerals, meteorites, animals etc. The building itself is beautiful and there is a cafe at the top of the building. Well worth a visit.

This museum is in the palace building on the right side of Maria Theresa Statue when you face the statue from Ringstrasse. The museum has delightful collections of the items typically found in natural history museums, which would certainly please children. But this museum also has an impressive collection of gem stones which can please adults as well. When we visited this museum last September, we liked the layout of the displays as well as the quality of displays. Unlike huge American Museum of Natural History in New York City, which intimidates the visitors who have to navigate through complex hallways to go from one display area to another, this museum in Vienna is small enough and its displays are logically arranged in proper sequence, making it so easy to navigate the display areas. This museum is highly recommended to the families with children.

When the kids were younger I took them to these types of places and they loved the Natural History Museum In New York a few years back. This was a different experience as they are older now and really appreciated the history and detail behind the exhibits especially some of the marine life specimens and Venus of Willendorf. The age of this relic is mind blowing. The dinosaur robot is also amazing.
We also had cake and coffee in the cafe, which is beautiful.

The museum displays all kinds of animals that can be found all over the world. Here you can also learn about minerals, nature and even the first moon landing.
Bring your children along and they will enjoy it since there are some interactive areas. There is also a cafe on the top floor if you need to take a rest for a while. it's worth a visit.

Is there anywhere in the museum that I can leave my luggages (travel bags)?
Written February 28, 2023
Simple answer yes.
They have a cloakroom down a few stairs to the right of the main entrance hall.
They will take coats and cases etc as it’s in their interest that you don’t go bounding through the exhibits like the proverbial bull in a China shop!
They are also fine for you to pop back and forth to get things, as for example during the Christmas market period they expect you to go get your coat and layers at 11 ish when the market opens right outside between the natural history and art history museums.
