Top ways to experience Maria Theresien Square

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

The large public Maria-Theresien-Platz (square) connects the Ringstraße with the Museumsquartier.

The museum of modern arts is now located in the former Imperial Stables.
Facing each other from the sides of the square are two almost identical buildings, the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum.

At the center of the square stands the Maria-Theresia Memorial, a large statue depicting Empress Maria Theresa.

Another Christmas market visit!

This one was well laid out in a cross shape - easy to navigate around the beautiful statue in the middle of the square.

The food and drink outlets were at the end of each lane, which meant you weren’t trying to navigate through tables of eaters / drinkers whilst shopping - very well thought out.

Enjoyed this visit and returned twice in our trip.

A square sandwiched by Kunsthistorische Museum and the Natural History Museum and topped by a giant Maria Theresa statue in the middle.

This is an aesthetically pleasing square in the historic centre of Vienna. Most visitors would want to drop by this place for a photo at least.

The first time we came the square was closed for dismantling of the Christmas market. We went to Salzburg for few days and came back to find out the works have been completed. We were overjoyed we could now enjoy walking through the square and take pictures with Maria Theresa statue.

The Hofburg was the goal for that day. You can not miss big statue of female leader of monarchy in middle of Maria-Theresien-Platz. From one side the Hofburg and museums. These big old buildings you can just ignore as there are big and unique

Sadly, the entire area is under construction, with many paths blocked off. Only one fountain and 2 benches were accessible. We had to be very creative to block all the construction trucks and cranes out of our photos. The main statue of Maria-Theresa is absolutely impressive, it took the sculptor and his apprentice 13 years to create.

The square is a must to see which then leads onto Hoffburg Palace which is also on your short list. The buildings and architecture are stunning and just s short walk from the Museum quarter. There are little cafes dotted around where you can just sit down and take in the views and let the Austrian people just go about their business. Can get quite busy but you can walk into the park where there is ample seating where you can enjoy a picnic or a nice cup of coffee. Well worth a visit before entering the Hoffburg Palace.

Maria Theresien Square is flanked by the two Habsburg palaces that house the museums of art and natural sciences.
In the center of the square is the huge monument of the Austrian empress Maria Theresa - Maria Theresien Denkmal.
The statue was erected in 1888, and shows the Austrian empress seated on the throne, holding in her hands the insignia of imperial power, being surrounded by the equestrian statues of 4 of his field marshals.

We visited the Maria Theresien Square during December for the Christmas market referred to as Weihnachtsdorf, meaning Christmas village, that was held there.

We loved the käsespätzle , a homemade egg noodle called späetzle that is topped with butter, cheese and caramelized onions that one of the booths sold hot and fresh.

The square is located between the History Museum and the Art Museum.

A mandatory photo spot while you are in Vienna. In December, Christmas market stalls might block you view. But at the brighter side, you may enjoy good food with nice view.

There are quite a few public squares scattered around Innere Stadt, Maria-Theresien-Platz being one of the more beautiful and well situated just outside Ringstraße, connecting Museumquartier to Heldenplatz and the Hofburg Palace. It is where you find the world class Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) and the family-friendly Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum).

There square itself is centred with an impressive 19 metre tall monument of Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) along with four Triton and Mermaid fountains and nice landscaping. It makes for a pleasant place to browse and enjoy before or after your museum visits or if passing through to other locations for intended sightseeing.
