Stunning location by the lake which is matched by the stage design. The atmosphere must be incredible on a fine a Summer’s night with nearly seven thousand people in the amphitheater.
BUT more importantly, this is a James Bond film location! Featured in Quantum of Solace, this was where Daniel Craig’s Bond tracked Greene and spied on Quantum’s secret meeting.
An absolute must for Bond nerds.

I came alone but was part of a larger group.
Everything was organized perfectly including an impressive evening dinner right before the show. Please see pictures for further details.

we saw Magic Flute at the festival. We've seen it a number of times including covent garden and this was easy the best production. The quality of singing was amazing for the open.
One tip, Bregenz is not much to right home about. If we go again, we would stay in Lindau, which is lovely, and get the special festival ferry across.

We went to see the Opera on the Lake - Carmen this summer. It was unforgettably beautiful. If you can go, you should! We stayed at the Mercure hotel right within steps of the venue. The room was clean and air conditioned and they offered a lovely brunch. We also made dinner reservations at eventZ on the event property and we were able to sit outside, enjoy a good dinner, and people watch. A really fabulous experience. We took the train from Zurich which lets you off right at the hotel. You can make reservations and buy tickets for everything online.

This was our third visit to Bregenzer Festspiele. We went to see Carmen. The location couldn't be more fantastic. The stage ist just great and the performance was absolute great - we loved every minute of it. It was our daughter's first visit and her first opera and she loved it. We will definitely come again.

What a beautiful experience. Please make your reservations for next year and you must include the backstage tour to appreciate all the work that has been put in to enjoy such a magnificent OPERA on the Lake.

It’s the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that you’re listening to. What else can you look for...?
Of course, the stageshow is a SHOW. But it’s spectacular. Somehow the Lake of Constance is included in the plot: actors drown, get killed in the lake, fall into it.
Spectacular, too, is the natural scenery. Ducks don’t care about the stageshow. They will just continue their swims and quack-quack no matter how dramatic the opera may be...

Until a few weeks ago I had never even heard of Bregenz! We discovered it via planet rail and I'm glad we did. As keen but pretty ignorant opera converts - thanks to the New York Met simultaneous broadcasts, we thought an outdoor event would be fun - and different. And so it was.
Turandot had a stunning set with many impressive effects, a spectacle but all the better for that as I had the bizarre experience of only faintly remembering the story about half way through; limited Italian, and a smattering of German to decipher the subtitles! Nevertheless I enjoyed the opera but wouldn't presume to comment on the musical standards, nor did I expect ROH or New York Met.
Aa couple of caveats : fine weather is a must so that's a gamble. Less of a gamble is the seats. Its worth paying for seats near the stage as it's a big theatre, ideally slightly to one side so you can read the subtitles, or swot up on the opera you've chosen beforehand!

A opera played on a stage situated in the Lake Constance. A great event in the open under a star sky. Good actors with with good voices. For friends of operas just a must. This year it was Turandot next year it will be Hamlet. The festival takes place end of Juli until September. I enjoyed it very much and can only recommend it.

We will be passing through Bregenz in late September. We might make a short stop midday but would this years stage still be up then if the festival ends in August? Do we need tickets post-festival to see the stage if not attending a performance? Thanks.

Hi! The festival season will end in August. Shortly afterwards the deconstruction work will start. Since the stage is HUGE I am sure there will still be lots to see in September, maybe not the complete stage anymore. Just take a walk along the Lake and you will most likely catch a glimpse. Enjoy your trip!

Planning to go to Bregenz to see the opera stage in Feb 2019. I would appreciate any suggestions to my queries, please.
1. Will the stage with cards for Carmen still be there? I see somewhere stage theme is changed every 2 years.
2. Is a day trip enough for both Lindau & Bregenz? I am traveling from Sulz am Neckar.
3. Is the visit worth the trip as it is not the Bregenz festival? Do you think I should visit other German states like Black Forest, Regensburg and Nuremberg?
4. For a clearer picture, my 12 days schedule in Germany include Frankfurt, Cochem, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Fussen, Stuttgart on the list.
Lindau/Bregenz trip is still considering. Would be grateful if anyone can help to suggest whether I should add or delete any place. This is my very first trip to Germany.
Thank you.

I would like to buy two tickets as gifts for my friends to the open air theatre
Written October 21, 2018
The open air fest is awesome. The only thing is that you are rolling the dice with the weather.
We took ponchos once as the play went on despite the drizzle.
Still I have been there 3 x and only had rain once

Hi we are 3 adults booked our Bregenz Carmen on the 20th July, our flight arrives on Zurich 18/7 return on 22/7. Can anyone suggest another pretty old town to stay for 4 nights? we haven't decided should we hire a car or travel by train. Appreciate your suggestion.

Without doubt Lindau is the best place to see. The town is on an island joined by a caiseway to the shore and has a railway staion also on a causeway It offers a wide range of boat trips including one to Mainu island , a beautiful semi-tropical place with fabulous flowers and ancient trees/
