The Bregenz Festival is one of the things you have to do in your life. Fantastic scenery, unique views, excellent musicians and singers, and a unique set design. The productions are rather free, something not only for opera fans, especially because of the many additional information about the play, the "subtitles" to the libretto. For us a unique experience !

I paid a lot of money and drove across three countries to see Der Freischütz. Instead, what I saw was some idiotic expressionist baloney, based only extremely loosely on the opera's synopsis, just sprinkled here and there with badly mutilated bits and pieces of Weber's music. Poor Weber must have been rolling over in his grave. What a piece of utter garbage. I feel so cheated. I want my money and my time back.
I'll give them that the mise en scène was great, and that the lead singers did indeed sing absolutely beautifully (the orchestra, sadly, not so much). That's why I'm giving them two stars instead of one. For someone who has never heard this opera and has no idea what to expect, the show was fantastic. But to a connoisseur of classical music, and especially of Weber's work, it was extremely painful to watch and to listen to.
I don't know if all of the Bregenzer Festspiele performances are like this. Maybe others are more normal and honest. But I won't take my chances again. I will never, ever, return. You know, shame on you if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice. They definitely won't fool me twice.
