Cozy area by the river Inn. Take a look at the Dom, have a coffee or a snack at Moustach just beside it. Today its Sunny and 25° midsummer night and the city feels like the calm before the storm. People dreesed in lederhosen och dirndls . Houses are old but very pretty.

We had an awesome time exploring the streets and shops of the Innsbruck old city. It basically stretches from the Triumphal Arch through St Anne’s Place to the Golden Roof. Make sure you also go to the river for an awesome view of the Coloured Houses and the high alpine peaks which loom over the city. Our only regret was not spending enough time there.

The Aldstadt is a lovely building set in an equally lovely street.
There is not a lot to see inside it as it is still a working building but it is very picturesque.
As part of the Inssbruck experience and such a lovely location it is certainly worth a visit.

If you visit Innsbruck you have to visit the old town. Beautiful buildings and car free. Lots of restaurants are also located here. It has some nice cosy streets but it is not as big as for example the old town of Salzburg.

Designed for busloads of tourists, without them, all amenities are in disrepair, especially toilets.

We love the old city and enjoy it when in Innsbruck. We DID learn a lesson on this trip though: don't come here during the spring/summer, because all the idiots who smoke are out in full force. We couldn't walk more that 20 feet without some dope blowing smoke. It's so not necessary, and really should not be allowed in tourist areas; but then how can it be controlled? Frankly, I really don't care if this will annoy some reading this who smoke, because smoking is a privilege, NOT a right. If they want to poison themselves, that's their choice. But to poison others against their will should be illegal. Breathing clean air is a right. Next time, we'll enjoy the old city off-peak.

Altstadt means "Old Town" and refers to the historical center of Innsbruck, which dates back at least 1,000 years or so. The town sort of grew from the original & strategic bridge that was constructed across the River Inn - which facilitated trade and travel between Germany and Italy. The old town is remarkably well preserved and presented - especially considering the city was bombed 22 times during World War II. The area is centered around, but not limited to, the Maria-Theresien-Strasse open-air pedestrian shopping district. It offers many fine examples of Tirolean, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, fine churches and palaces. It is small and intimate enough to be easily walked (pray for good weather!) but large enough to be worth the time to visit. The setting, with the high alps surrounding much of it, is breathtaking. Best of all, it's free to see. (And there are no stairs involved! It's all flat.)

Helpful Innsbruck hint for Americans. The hotel takes American credit cards, however many of the restaurants in Old Town do not. If you expect to use a card, ask first. There is a cash machine in old town that takes American cash cards. It appears to have. €200 per day per card limit. To find it go to the Golden roof, you can’t miss it, face the roof and look to your right. The cash machine is under the portico.
