What a great experience that was!

The beer is delicious and the ambiance so unique on the charming garden with lighted up trees and big wood tables. There are some food kiosks that offer a selection that works well with the beer.

I highly recommend it, be prepared to wait a bit in line to get in some days.

If you're looking for an authentic place where locals go to for their beer, this place is a must visit. It has a very different experience from the typical bar. The beer are brewed on site and you'll need to get a cup from the common area and wash it yourself, before going to the beer counter and choosing which kind of beer you want.

It was a really unique experience but intimidating if you're an Asian like me, because everything is self-service. Still, it offered something really different and gave a peek into the local culture, which I liked a lot. Plus the beer is really good and refreshing!

There is also different food stalls here so you don't have to worry about going hungry. You'll need to find your own seats though and there is no table service, so things can get a little chaotic. Still a great experience nonetheless.

This is a beer hall run by Monks and believe me - it is the best beer I have tasted, which is from an experienced and well travelled person!!

Definitely worth a visit and a stein (or 5!). No food served but a small area outside main hall where you can buy food like cheeses meats, etc.

It was certianly a new experience. At around 9 in the evening, most of the goods had finished, so we didn't have much choice. We ordered what we found, sausages & potatoes which were o.k. as was the beer. We sat outside in the huge "garden" which was loud & packed & not so clean I should say. It was rather fun being there. Toilets were sparkling clean though that was a nice surprise. No cards accepted, only cash.

Augustiner Bräu Mülln is the large beer hall and adjacent beer garden situated in the Mülln neighborhood of Salzburg. It's about a 15 minute walk down the river from the Altstadt. The place is an old monastery where brewing was started in the 17th century by Augstin monks and then opened to the public in the 19th century (ca. 1835).

The interior is old-school Austria: rather dark, long wooden tables, dark wood paneling, and not much else. There is no live music (in fact it is forbidden) like in Munich's Hofbräuhaus. This is the place to be in the winter for meeting friends. But the summer months are the best time to go here to enjoy the outdoor beergarden. It seems like every local in town, young and old, come here on nice days to have a picnic or just to quaff the best brew in Salzburg. Get there early if you want your own table, otherwise you'll sit at someone else's table if there is room, and that is perfectly acceptable and encouraged.

Now to the beer procedure: You take a mug from the shelf, wash it at the fountain, pay the cashier for a "Mass" (1 liter) or a "halbe" (1/2 liter), and give the receipt to the guy pouring from the wooden cask. The beer is a Märzen, so it's slightly darker than a lager or pils, but very drinkable. Taste is slightly malty with subtle hops, naturally lightly carbonated, very smooth, and fresh finishing. Novice beer drinkers will find it easy to try and like. You'll return many times to the Bierausschank for "just one more" Mass...

We went there for a beer and stayed for a long time.
The History Channel rates this facility as the number one beer garden and the number one beer in the world.
I would be very hard pressed to disagree in any fashion.
The food was great, the ambiance, the people and yes, the beer.

I LOVED this place. If you like beer, food and good conversation, go here. Many locals enjoy this place. First get a medium size beer or a large beer. Then go and buy your plate of food. The next stop is one of the large dining rooms. Pick a seat at one of the tables and start up a conversation. I was amazed how many locals eat here. Even they say they go there for great beer and good food. I have been to breweries and bars all over Europe and find this place has EXCELLENT beer. I went twice when I was there in the winter of 2005. I told a friend about it, and he tried it out in 2006. He was very impressed by the beer as well. If you go to Salzburg, you MUST check this place out. Its not downtown, but a short walk or a bus ride from downtown. Locals will give you the directions. It is very easy to find.

We loved visiting this popular old-school Austrian beer hall, just a few blocks NW of Altstadt (Old Town) Salzburg. Your beer is delivered the old-fashioned way: You pay the cashier, grab a stein, rinse it with cold water, then hand it over to be filled from the tap. Just down the hall several food vendors offer a nice variety of baked goods, roasted sausages, ribs & other meat, salads, etc. It was especially fun to sample the shaved white radishes -- a local tradition. In cold weather, there are at least 4 large rooms to check-out -- each slightly different -- where you can to sit, eat, drink, socialize & people-watch. And during warmer weather, there is a huge beer garden outside under several large shade trees. We thought the prices for both beer & food were quite reasonable. Don't miss this place -- highly recommended!

What a venue for enjoying a brew! Be prepared for long lines to purchase your bier and bring cash. Once clear of the cashier get your stein and stand in line and watch the masters tap wooden kegs and fill steins at an amazing fast pace! We saw them actually "roll out the barrels" to be tapped. There are plenty of food stalls where you can get pork shoulder, kraut, wursts, fish, really cool spiral fired potato chips to go with your bier. And they have somethings for your sweet tooth as well. While the outdoor bier garten was packed and noisy, we found the upstairs large hall with plenty of empty tables where we could sit and chat and enjoy our drinks and bites. It's great for families: our granddaughter found a little play area with a slide and other kids out in the bier garten. There are also plenty of soft drinks for those who don't choose the bier. Coming from Portland, Oregon, micorbrew capital of the universe, I am accustomed to being swamped with long lists of local craft brew choices. The Augustiner makes choice simple: there's just the monk-brewed bier. So grab your bring cash, grab a stein sit back and enjoy. Prost!

This is a must see if you are in Salzburg and like beer. Beer hall atmosphere and there are plenty of food options. Getting the beer is the best part, you pick your stein from the shelf (size, Liter, half Liter) rinse it out at the rinsing station, pay for it at the window and then take it over to the person at the wooden keg and they fill it for you. They also have beer warmers if you want to warm it up. A local told my wife, who was inquiring about the warming pool, that when the temp is cold or cool its better for your constitution if you warm the beer.
