- Jackie W72 contributionsSpectacular viewsWe took number 5 bus from Mozartsteg to the Untersberg cable car station. The journey was very pleasant. We had the Salzburg cards which included the bus and cable car rides. The 8 and a half minute cable car reached to the height of 1,776 metres. The view was stunning. We walked along the small trail, passed the cross and reached to the top with lookout. We overlooked the Berchtesgaden and snow capped mountains of Germany. The walk stimulated our appetite. We went to Hochalm chalet and enjoyed the Austrian platter of meat and cheese washed down by a Steigle beer before our thrilling decent on the cable car. Highly recommended.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 19, 2024
- Californian4now5 contributionsWorth a visit with the Salzburg cardWorth a visit if you have the Salzburg card. Bus 25 (covered by the card) and cable car up to the mountain is also covered by the card. It was very cloudy when we went, there were no views. But the short hike was good. It was very calm and serene. Combine with a visit to the Hellbrunn Palace. Easy to do both in one day.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 22, 2024
- gemlovestotravelManchester, United Kingdom81 contributionsStunning viewsEasy to get to from Salzburg train station - take bus no.25 (fee not included with Salzburg card). It’s about 40mins and Untersberg is the last stop. Cable car station directly across from the bus stop and runs every 30mins. Free with Salzburg card and no need to queue for tickets. Toilets are at the bottom and the top and there’s a cafe at the top. You can ask to use the lift if you struggle up the stairs to cable car. It’s very smooth but will warn you that when you see the first stanchion that’s not the end and it gets very high from there!Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 24, 2024
- LucindahOakham, United Kingdom10 contributionsGreat views and helpful staff! We went first thing in the morning and got on the first trip at 8.30am. It was really quiet and you could pick your spot, so worth going early. I’m not a fan of heights, as went for my daughter and the young guy running it was so helpful. He took videos for me on my phone as I couldn’t always look! It goes very high and you feel it more on the way up! But glad I did it for the beautiful views.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2024
- 80ways-aroundworld99 contributionsBreathtaking viewsIf you are in Salzburg, take the bus to Untersburg and ride the cable car to the top. The bus takes 30 minutes to get there. If you but a Salzburg card, it covers the cost of the bus and the cable car. You can also go to the zoo and/or the palace which are a few bus stops away from the cable car. The cable car took 8 minutes. The view is breathtaking from the top. Be prepared for deep snow and ice in winter. Proper walking boots or trainers with a good grip are needed. Hats, gloves and scarf to protect from the wind. It does get slippery in places, so if you want to go far along the ridge, consider walking poles. There is a lovely cafe at the top of the cable car. The hot chocolate with rum and the shredded pancake with both plum and apple jams were really good. Definitely worth a stop before you head back down.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 23, 2024
- MinneapolismumSaint Paul, Minnesota78 contributionsWell worth the white knuckles! Not a fan of heights but this was well worth the white knuckles! Figuring out how to get there was not straightforward but buses do run regularly. The driver of the 840 denied our Salzburg pass so we ended up paying the fare. The ride ip the mountain is smooth and runs about 8 mins either way. There are a couple of waystations where the car lifts suddenly and which gave me a startle. Views from the top were amazing. Well worth it, especially on a clear, sunny winter’s day.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten January 16, 2025

Taking bus #25 by the Salzburg train station, we overheard a woman talking about a cable car and a mountain. Our intentions were to go the Palace of Hellbrunn. We missed the Hellbrunn stop and decided to take the bus further for the cable car which is the last stop for bus #25.
There is an actual center where you can buy a ticket or show your Salzburg card. A cable car takes you up the 6473-foot (1973 meters) mountain of Untersberg. It is the highest peak in the region. The cable car was first constructed back in 1961. The mountain was actually seen in the move, The Sound of Music.
The 28 Euro ride is nearly fully paid for by the 30 Euro daily Salzburg Card—which includes the bus ride. 50 people—and there is a number counter—is squeezed in the cable car. My wife was, unfortunately, stepped on and developed a severe contusion on a right foot. Our memories of this mountain are mixed.
On a nice day, the views are majestic. One can actually see the castle in Salzburg. We did notice there are a number of trails. From the constructed center, the trail goes up for more views. We did not make it that far due to the event that happen to my wife.
Luckily, the ride down was less dramatic as there was less than 10 people in the car.

A must do if you are in Salzburg. We had the Salzburg card. Cable car and bus rides alone pays off the SB card cost. Bus 25 and 5 both go to the Untersberg. Bus 25 takes scenic route and also stops at Hellbrunn palace and the zoo.
The cable car ride was smooth and thrilling. It offers stunning views. It was a beautiful clear day, windy at the top. At the top incredible views in all directions. The small hike takes you to further up for more far reaching views. There are informative plaques. There are more trails to explore the mountain.
Get the Salzburg card and enjoy this beautiful attraction and more.

A must-do if you are in Salzburg. We bought a Salzburg Card at the tourist information office: a bus ride to and from the Untersberg and a round trip on the cable car and you’ve almost recouped the cost of your card - and there’s still loads more places you can visit/ buses to ride for free using the card during your chosen 24 or 48 hour period.
We chose the most gloriously clear June day to go. Half an hour on the number 25 bus and you’re there. (This bus also stops at the Zoo and the Hellbrunn Palace, so you could combine a trip there too). The short cable car trip was exciting, if not a little alarming for some, but the views at the top are stunning. Keep an eye out for mountain goats on the hillsides from the cable car. Depending on your fitness levels you can wander for miles, be sure of suitable footwear! There are informative signs about the wonderful alpine flora, and we saw plenty of butterflies and birds, and some maps describing the different peaks and lakes that can be seen from the summit.
There’s a couple of café places at the top, but one imagines they can get busy. If you get the chance, do go.

This is a must do trip while in Saltzburg. Catch the number 25 bus and just get off at the last stop. We were lucky to go on a clear sunny day, in an otherwise rainy week, and the views were stunning. The cable car is speedy, if a little crowded and runs every 10 minutes or so and the little cafe at the top serves food and the obligatory hot chocolate! We used the Saltzburg card which made it excellent value.

the views were amazing! Cable car was sensational, only takes 8 minutes but it feels like you are climbing forever. At the top it is a short walk to a sensational viewpoint with lots of information about the surrounding hills.

Great way to spend a few hours of a trip to Salzburg. Particularly at this time of year when there's plenty of snow at the top (but none in town). On a clear day, such as we had, the views were great and it's really nice in the sunny weather.
Cable car up is pricey (EUR25 return), but it is free with a Salzburg Card (one of its many many benefits).
Easy to reach from the town centre by bus. One of the bus routes (route 25) also goes via Hellbrunn and Salzburg Zoo, so it is very easy to combine all 3 into an excellent day trip (as we did).

A visit to the Untersberg is a must on a city trip to Salzburg. The Untersbergbahn takes you to the plateau in around 10 minutes. The trip up and down is free for SalzburgCard holders, otherwise adults pay €28, children over 6 years old pay €14.50. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
During the trip and from the mountain station you have a magnificent view.

The mountain peak is wonderful and the views from it are amazing.. One of the most beautiful things I have seen, although I have visited many places in the Alps.. Approaching the splendor of the Swiss Alps.. The access to the summit is by bus 25 from the main Salzburg train station till the end of the line , when you get out of the busy you will find the cable car station just in front of you. And as soon as you go up the mountain, you will know your way and find the whole city of Salzburg below you, as well as the river and the surrounding green attractive mountains.. Choose a day free of clouds, rain and with a good temperature to enjoy .. and have sport shoes with you that fit the slopes.. don't forget to bring juice or something to drink with you. The place is suitable for children and the degree of ruggedness is slight, but it is a bit difficult for wheelchairs and strollers.. The only problem is the crowding of people in the cable cars.. I benefited from the Salzburg card to ride the bus and go up to the mountain by cable car for free.. That activity is in my opinion the most important if you go to Salzburg

Beautiful views and there was snow upstairs when we were there so it looked great. With the Salzburg card the cable car ride is free. We had the card for 72 hours and this is highly recommended. Many sights are free, so you can visit places that you probably wouldn't otherwise because of the costs. The bus is also free with the card, so it's really easy to see Salzburg

Denise & Rich from silverglobetrotters.com took the cable car up to the top of Untersberg.
The ascent started off quite sedately moving steadily enabling us enjoy the views! As we approached the first pylon, we were all tricked into thinking that we were nearing the summit, the car came so close to the ragged rock that it felt as if we could touch it but suddenly without warning the mountain fell away beneath us and there was a gasp from everyone on board as we took in the amazing views of the abyss below, a very dramatic moment! This was only the halfway point.
Stepping out of the top station onto the mountain was breath taking! We found ourselves standing on a snowy mountain with no barriers, no fences, just us and common sense between the summit and the very long drop to the bottom, it took us a few minutes to assimilate to the surroundings and the sheer expanse of it!
The valleys below were green and fertile, the surrounding mountains all with snowy caps whilst Untersberg was wrapped in a blanket of snow with spikes of pine poking through, it was as if we had stepped into a Christmas card.
There was a viewing platform near the café for those less adventurous, but we set out to explore the trails taking us up to the cross at the top.
We were glad that we had worn boots as the snow was quite deep in places which made climbing higher up difficult but perfectly possible. We were making good progress when the wind suddenly whipped up causing blizzard like conditions from the fallen snow, it only lasted about 20 minutes or so, but it was quite spectacular!
Pulling our hats firmly around our ears against the icy wind we were in awe of the stunning views of the Salzburg Basin, the Watzmann which is the third highest mountain in Germany just south of the village of Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut to the east, a region of lakes and Alpine ranges and the Hohe Tauern mountains to the south.
After the exhilaration of walking on the snowy mountain and soaking up the spell binding views before us that would surely never fade, we rewarded our efforts with a welcome mug of hot chocolate in the café before we made our descent!
Top Tips:
Check the weather, bright clear days in the town do not necessarily mean it will be clear on the mountain.
Wear appropriate clothing for the time of year, the top station lies in high Alpine terrain.
Untersbergbahn (cable car station) can be reached by No 25 or No 28 bus from Salzburg, it takes about 30 minutes.
The No 25 also stops at Hellbrunn Palace which can visited on the return journey.

Is it recommended to purchase tickets in advance or can tickets be purchased on the day of use? We’re considering this at the end of December.
Written September 30, 2021
Hello! The ride was included in the Salzburg card, which was offered in our hotelarrangement. We advise this card! We showed it at the entrance and every 30 minutes a cable car goes up. You just wait for the next to depart. There’s place for 50 P per ride. I wish you a nice travel.

Hi can you just walk up this mountain freely or does it need to be a guided tour. And is it open to go up November 23rd?
Written November 13, 2019
There are signposted routes up the mountain. It’s over 2000m high so it’s quite a trip! From the Salzburg side, there are 2 routes - where they split near the bottom, you can take the Right hand path which goes up the back through the woods, or the Left hand route the Dopplersteig which goes up the front and has a steep section for the final 1/4 with steel cables Via Ferrata for support. I clung on tightly and made it by *not* looking down. It’s very scenic 😉😉
