A must-do if you are in Salzburg. We bought a Salzburg Card at the tourist information office: a bus ride to and from the Untersberg and a round trip on the cable car and you’ve almost recouped the cost of your card - and there’s still loads more places you can visit/ buses to ride for free using the card during your chosen 24 or 48 hour period.
We chose the most gloriously clear June day to go. Half an hour on the number 25 bus and you’re there. (This bus also stops at the Zoo and the Hellbrunn Palace, so you could combine a trip there too). The short cable car trip was exciting, if not a little alarming for some, but the views at the top are stunning. Keep an eye out for mountain goats on the hillsides from the cable car. Depending on your fitness levels you can wander for miles, be sure of suitable footwear! There are informative signs about the wonderful alpine flora, and we saw plenty of butterflies and birds, and some maps describing the different peaks and lakes that can be seen from the summit.
There’s a couple of café places at the top, but one imagines they can get busy. If you get the chance, do go.

This is a must do trip while in Saltzburg. Catch the number 25 bus and just get off at the last stop. We were lucky to go on a clear sunny day, in an otherwise rainy week, and the views were stunning. The cable car is speedy, if a little crowded and runs every 10 minutes or so and the little cafe at the top serves food and the obligatory hot chocolate! We used the Saltzburg card which made it excellent value.

Great way to spend a few hours of a trip to Salzburg. Particularly at this time of year when there's plenty of snow at the top (but none in town). On a clear day, such as we had, the views were great and it's really nice in the sunny weather.
Cable car up is pricey (EUR25 return), but it is free with a Salzburg Card (one of its many many benefits).
Easy to reach from the town centre by bus. One of the bus routes (route 25) also goes via Hellbrunn and Salzburg Zoo, so it is very easy to combine all 3 into an excellent day trip (as we did).

The mountain peak is wonderful and the views from it are amazing.. One of the most beautiful things I have seen, although I have visited many places in the Alps.. Approaching the splendor of the Swiss Alps.. The access to the summit is by bus 25 from the main Salzburg train station till the end of the line , when you get out of the busy you will find the cable car station just in front of you. And as soon as you go up the mountain, you will know your way and find the whole city of Salzburg below you, as well as the river and the surrounding green attractive mountains.. Choose a day free of clouds, rain and with a good temperature to enjoy .. and have sport shoes with you that fit the slopes.. don't forget to bring juice or something to drink with you. The place is suitable for children and the degree of ruggedness is slight, but it is a bit difficult for wheelchairs and strollers.. The only problem is the crowding of people in the cable cars.. I benefited from the Salzburg card to ride the bus and go up to the mountain by cable car for free.. That activity is in my opinion the most important if you go to Salzburg

Denise & Rich from silverglobetrotters.com took the cable car up to the top of Untersberg.
The ascent started off quite sedately moving steadily enabling us enjoy the views! As we approached the first pylon, we were all tricked into thinking that we were nearing the summit, the car came so close to the ragged rock that it felt as if we could touch it but suddenly without warning the mountain fell away beneath us and there was a gasp from everyone on board as we took in the amazing views of the abyss below, a very dramatic moment! This was only the halfway point.
Stepping out of the top station onto the mountain was breath taking! We found ourselves standing on a snowy mountain with no barriers, no fences, just us and common sense between the summit and the very long drop to the bottom, it took us a few minutes to assimilate to the surroundings and the sheer expanse of it!
The valleys below were green and fertile, the surrounding mountains all with snowy caps whilst Untersberg was wrapped in a blanket of snow with spikes of pine poking through, it was as if we had stepped into a Christmas card.
There was a viewing platform near the café for those less adventurous, but we set out to explore the trails taking us up to the cross at the top.
We were glad that we had worn boots as the snow was quite deep in places which made climbing higher up difficult but perfectly possible. We were making good progress when the wind suddenly whipped up causing blizzard like conditions from the fallen snow, it only lasted about 20 minutes or so, but it was quite spectacular!
Pulling our hats firmly around our ears against the icy wind we were in awe of the stunning views of the Salzburg Basin, the Watzmann which is the third highest mountain in Germany just south of the village of Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut to the east, a region of lakes and Alpine ranges and the Hohe Tauern mountains to the south.
After the exhilaration of walking on the snowy mountain and soaking up the spell binding views before us that would surely never fade, we rewarded our efforts with a welcome mug of hot chocolate in the café before we made our descent!
Top Tips:
Check the weather, bright clear days in the town do not necessarily mean it will be clear on the mountain.
Wear appropriate clothing for the time of year, the top station lies in high Alpine terrain.
Untersbergbahn (cable car station) can be reached by No 25 or No 28 bus from Salzburg, it takes about 30 minutes.
The No 25 also stops at Hellbrunn Palace which can visited on the return journey.

Is also included in the Salzburg Card.
Be sure to pick a day with good wheather, otherwise you will miss out on the spectacular views. The ride looks scary because of the large span to the first pole, but it is smooth.
We went up and made the hike to the hill with the cross, like most people do. It's not that far but it's still a climb and you get nice views, also on the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. Top it off with lunch at the Hochalm Gasthof next to the lift and you will have spent three hours on the trip.
You can also hike to the Eishöhle and the Lentz cabin, but that is more for advanced walkers, and requires a whole day.
Walking shoes are advisable, if not necessary. Also take warm clothes, the wheather at the top can change quickly.
As to Corona: the 3G check was done before boarding.

An absolute gem of a trip.
Caught the No 25 bus (3 euros each) from the bus station to the foot of Untersberg (very last stop) for some nice views.
Cable car return a little steep at €28 each but wow the views when you get to the top are amazing.
I would advise avoiding the grumpy staff in the restaurant at the top as the food was poor and over priced. We can accept the overpriced if it’s decent but not both!
If you fancy it and are able aim for the cross on top of the highest accessible peak, it’s a little bit of a yomp but well worth the views and tranquility.

I've been on lots of these rides but be warned, this one is steep and judders significantly as the car rides over the upper pylons. It's a 15min ride and they pack you in. The cafe at the top is very busy and the icy path to the cross at the summit has not safety barriers.
It was a clear day when we visited, a hand glider buzzed the summit which was cool to see. And remember it's about -7 up there on a good day, so take your cold gear.

If you really want to the top of Salzberg without tourists rushing all over, this is where you should be.
I planned it as a surprise for my wife and she indeed loved it. Low rush, perfect for small hiking, easy and approachable. This is too good to be true.
Although were were not in full hiking gear, we still reached to a good point where multiple mountain ranges are visible. It was just spectacular!
We ate some muffins on the top as it was so peaceful to not be in a overcrowded tourist place.
The routes which are discussed in other comments were really helpful and regardless to say, do buy a Salzberg card prior.

Definitely get the Salzburg card first as it’s 25 euros to go up and back but make sure you have enough time on the card as if it runs out whilst you yup there you have to pay to come back down.
You get a lovely view going up, there a cafe at the top. Make sure you have boots with a good grip as the snow can be a bit icy up there. Lovely and peaceful. You can get the 25 bus there. We went to the zoo for a visit first then got back on the bus and carried on to Untersberg.

Is it recommended to purchase tickets in advance or can tickets be purchased on the day of use? We’re considering this at the end of December.

Hello! The ride was included in the Salzburg card, which was offered in our hotelarrangement. We advise this card! We showed it at the entrance and every 30 minutes a cable car goes up. You just wait for the next to depart. There’s place for 50 P per ride. I wish you a nice travel.

There are signposted routes up the mountain. It’s over 2000m high so it’s quite a trip! From the Salzburg side, there are 2 routes - where they split near the bottom, you can take the Right hand path which goes up the back through the woods, or the Left hand route the Dopplersteig which goes up the front and has a steep section for the final 1/4 with steel cables Via Ferrata for support. I clung on tightly and made it by *not* looking down. It’s very scenic 😉😉
Hi! What should I wear if I want to travel the Cable Car Untersberg in July? What is the temperature there on the peak?
