This place is lovely at any time of the year, but is especially lively on a hot day in June. It was a Saturday and the old market is just packed with both locals and tourists. Although there are a few stalls in the centre of the square, it doesn't really have an old market feel to it. Don't get me wrong, there's some fantastic shops, restaurants and cafes around the square and generally, it's a great place to have a drink and watch the world go by.
Don't be tempted to buy the Mozartkugel from the market though, it's much much cheaper just to buy it from a supermarket.

Enjoyed spending time wandering around the varied and many stalls which sold everything from bread to chocolate after our city tour. Sat on one of the seats and enjoyed a sandwich and coffee. There are public toilets nearby 50c per entry which were very clean.

This was my last (8th?) Christmas market during my vacation in Vienna. And I'm over them. There were quite a few vendors and stalls but all selling the same merch; same foods like sausages, chips, and mulled wine; a few stalls selling sweets and pastries, which I'm always happy to see, and the area is packed. I've eaten at a few markets and it's hit or miss. The food is neither good or bad and the prices are comparable.

The square is located off Judengasse and not far from Rathaus or the town hall.
We visited Salzburg in January when the Christmas markets have ended. Even the St Florian statue was covered in perspex casing. So the square was for most parts was devoid of crowd save for people passing through to get to other parts of the old town.
Branded luxury boutiques like Mont Blanc, Prada and Hermes surround the square.

Very nice little square that has served as a trading place since the 13th century. The square is enclosed by a row of stately town houses and in the middle stands the St. Florian Fountain. The square houses the famous café Tomaselli and next to it the narrowest house in Salzburg, only 1,42 meters wide. The café feeling is further enhanced by Konditorei Fürst, which gave rise to the first Mozartkugel. The old pharmacy has a very beautiful facade and the picturesque little street Goldgasse runs from here and ends at the Residenzplatz. There is still a market on the square that is mostly aimed at tourists, but above all you go here to meet and be seen among cafes and elegant shops

What a remarkable place in winter - so beautiful. We visited as part of a tour and couldn't fault this winter wonderland. The city itself is spectacular and the markets are simply breathtaking, such a variety of food/drink and wares. You will enjoy the history and scenery of this town. A visit to the markets is a must and would not be complete without a hot local wine served in a commemorative mug that you can keep as a memento. See the locals skating on the ice rink in town, view the awesome shops and revel in the history of this Austrian "Gem". NOTE - It's cash only in the markets.

"Alter Markt," the Old Marketplace in Salzburg's historic city center, was already laid out as an urban trading center and marketplace in the 13th century. The square was known as Ludwig Victor Square between 1873 and 1927 after Archduke Ludwig Viktor, the youngest brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who moved to Klessheim Palace in 1861. We took a nice stroll through the square during the evening hours after many of the tourists had left. It was a lot nicer and quieter than earlier in the day.
