For those who have the Salzburg Card the climb is free and it is worth taking a tour of the panoramic terrace.
The view of the city is beautiful, especially in the evening.
Recommended stop.
There is also a restaurant and a modern art museum.

We took the Monchsberg elevator to the top, but we didn’t go the the museum of art. We walked around the park and it was beautiful! The views of the alps were Spectacular!! We walked thru the park all the way to the fortress, but there are tons of other paths thru the park. The views of the alps were beautiful and the path was easy walking. We ended up at the fortress but we had been there the previous day so we walked downhill a bit to the Stiegl restaurant and had a beer and a bowl of their potato leek soup. Perfect ending to a nice little hike.

We found it a little difficult at first to find this place. Earlier in the day we saw the pipe-looking object on the side of the hill near a castle. We thought this was the main castle (Hohensalzburg Fortress) and the funicular. It's not. The pipe is also not the actual elevator like we thought it would be. The real thing is a series of 3 large, modern elevators, which are located in the same entrance as the Museum der Moderne Monchsberg. The elevator is not signposted like the museum. We walked in, thought it was the wrong place, walked out, then walked in again to realise it was indeed the lift to the top. It's 2.60pp one way, or 3.60 return.
It's by far the easiest and quickest way to get to the top, but you can go via other routes (one being from the Augustiner Braustubl). We took some amazing photos overlooking Salzburg right before sunset, in the rain. We then walked the easy 400m downhill to the Augustiner Braustubl (the Monk brewery).
The brewery is a must, particularly if you are of drinking age and appreciate the Bavarian food and drink culture.

Tip: When you get out of the elevator, head left to the large doors which lead out to a lookout over the city (basically the opposite to the museum entrance). Behind you will be a restaurant (we didn't go). You can walk along a lot of different paths to get other views, but if you want to get to the brewery, stay in front of the restaurant and take the path parallel to the river (there isn't a sign for 50m or so, but it will say "Mullner", the other name for the brewery). Just follow that.

There are plenty more stops you can make along the way to the brewery which give great views of the city. And the reward is a one of a kind monk-brewed beer which is painfully not available anywhere else in the world...

We had a 24 hour Salzburg Card and were aiming to cover as many things as we could within this time. The Moenchberg lift was open until 9pm as it was a Wednesday and we decided it would be perfect to view Salzburg, from above and at night. We went up about 8pm. There was no queue at this time and no other people around. It was lovely to see all the twinkling lights along the river and all the churches, buildings and the fortress lit up. Don't expect to spend long here, unless your going to visit the restaurant or art museum but it is worth a visit if you can squeeze it into your schedule!

The Monchsberg lift is three express elevators that take you from the base station in Anton-Neumayr-Platz to the Winkler Terrace near the Museum of Modern Art, high up on the hill called Monchsberg. This is the same terrace where Maria and the Von Trapps sang 'Do Re Mi' in the Sound of Music.

The small ticket price of € 3.40 (2014 price) gets you there and back. At the top you can visit the Museum of Modern Art or go for a walk further up the road towards Monchsberg Castle, which is now a hotel. There are also trails that lead to Hohensalzburg Fortress.

My favourite thing to do was to take photos at sunset from the terrace overlooking Salzburg's old city. The views were great. Of course, I had to wait until sunset, so in the meantime I sipped a nice Chardonnay at the museum's outside café area.

Pros

- cheap to ascend and descend
- open from 8am
- closes late on Wednesdays
- easy to get to
- operates later hours when the restaurant is open
- you can enjoy a coffee or wine at the top

Cons

- for sunset views you usually need to go on a Wednesday

Worth it for the views.

With the Mönchsberg Lift you get very fast to the viewing platform without waiting.
Views over the city and the fortress are magnificent. Also it's not crowded so you have enough time to take as many photos as you like or just watch the view.
Included in the Salzburg Card.

Must do if you are in Salzburg. Take the elevator and you will be rewarded with absolutely lovely views of the city! Usually the viewing platform is not too busy. We spent a long time there taking some lovely photos. Combined elevator + museum (Museum of Modern Art Salzburg Moenschberg) tickets also available and it works out really good value!

There is a restaurant at the top of this cliff and you get a beautiful view of the entire city. There is a funicular to the top of the cliff. We were advised to go here around sunset time. A must visit in salzburg

I don't know why there are reviews of this at all, it's an elevator. The views from up are nice, but the hill is big and the views are nice all around there. And you can easily walk there even if you are not fit. Actually you are better of walking around up at the hill, going up in a different place than going down. The views are nice from all around.

Just don't take the lift down. We walked up to the fortress, and walked around the hill and ended up here and just noticed a lift, and decided to see if it takes us down as we were looking for a path down. We did not see any kind of signs about payment and had not read anything about this lift beforehand. But once we got down you get into a gated area, where the only way out is to pay, and you can't go back either. So you take the lift but you have no information about it. This seemed like really unfair trap. Had we known, we would not taken it. I guess it is different if you also take the lift up, as then you probably pay before you get on the lift.

Ok...let's not get too excited about this attraction...it's an elevator. Yes, it does go up the interior of a mountain, so that's pretty cool. The views at the top are nothing short of spectacular. Still, you can save yourself the money by taking the stairs if you are fit enough...or, do what I did...pay for a one-way, and then walk down.

I highly recommend walking along the paths that take you along both sides of the mountain that face the river and the Alstadt. The hike is breathtakingly beautiful for those in shape enough to do it. I did it at night and it virtually felt like I had the city to myself.
