Having visited most of the museums in Salzburg, this was by far the best one. Interesting facts and good viewing. There is a good video story about local people that’s worth a watch. We run out of time, as the museum closes at five, but we would go back.

Pretty standard city museum that gives good info on Salzburg's history and culture. You can see it all relatively quickly. Good to buzz through and even better if it's hot or raining outside. Breeze through and take your time.

I think we finished this in 15 minutes! What a disjointed museum and not very interesting either. Went to the basement first where had a coffee shop exhibition. In German and not very interesting. Rest was just as bad. Thank goodness we had the Salzburg card as would not have been happy paying for this. Far better things to spend your time seeing.

We made a spur of the moment decision to pop into the Salzburg Museum as it was one of the attractions included on our Salzburg Card and we were curious about the history of the city. We were made very welcome and the children were given activity packs which they loved. The kids activities were interactive and the children were engaged with the museum. However, on visiting the exhibition on the ground floor, both children were severely reprimanded for sitting on the floor (one to read a exhibit label, and the other to listen to music on headphones). Neither of them were causing disturbance to other visitors (of whom there were few), blocking the access or otherwise drawing attention to themselves. Up until this point they had both been enjoying the museum, and couldn't understand what they had done wrong. We left shortly afterwards. What a shame that the good work that someone is obviously doing to help to engage children with the museum is being undermined by unnecessarily grumpy staff.

Very complete and well done. Right near city center and the Christmas Markets.
Loved the artifacts from the Von Trapp family and various video clips.

I would say you definitely have to visit this Museum. Modern, large, and lots of info about the Salzburg past. It can take you time to visit if you like to browse taking your time, don't go last minute. I think it's a must with the Salzburg Pass. Great in case you like Architecture for example. Lots of nice pictures.

I usually like this kind of small local museum, but this was even better than most. Their thoughtful exhibit of the museum's complicity with the Nazis was something that will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it.

The museum tries to be "modern", with many flat screens and audio visually enhanced exhibits. The overall appearance, however, is chaotic. It seems that everything that could somehow be considered "Salzburg" was included. In particular the exhibits from the last few decades were not really "special" but only vamped up with "light and sound".
If one has to choose, the "Dom Quartier" Museum should definitely be given priority over the "Salzburg Museum".
