- Grover RPensacola, Florida17,984 contributionsPart of the Salzburg card package. If time short, better things to see.The building of the Neue Residenz on the Residenzplaz next to the Cathedral houses the Salzburg museum. The Building itself along with the Glockenspiel and history is the best part of it. Our family was not particularly excited by the museum. It is included in the Salzburg card, so the visit cost nothing extra, but if your time is short, there are better things. It had some great medieval religious art, as well as some different modern art. It also has a good outdoor platform overlooking the Residenzplaz. The only thing I wish I could have done was the bell tower tour. Outside of that, I am not sure if this is worth the time. However I did love the building exterior and history.Visited June 2019Written April 11, 2020
- JohnMason1957Glasgow, United Kingdom200 contributionsReally helps understand SalzburgHighly recommended if you are interested in the story of this City. It was a real centre for princes and the church, but fell away as other cities took away power, until railways and tourism brought new life. The story is linked to art through the ages. The restored panorama painting is spectacular... apparently the only one of its kind left in the world. Good value at €9 for both.Visited February 2020Traveled soloWritten February 11, 2020
- Joh23 contributionsThorough look at SalzburgA great overview of Salzburg with themed exhibits about the city and its history. They have interactive exhibits on music, art, culture, archbishoprics, tourism, landscape/geography, religion, economy, Salzburg Festival, etc. I did it in an hour and a half. I bought the combined ticket with the panorama museum which is only a euro more and worth the extra euro. They had a special exhibit on coffee and coffee house culture in Salzburg, Austria and Europe. It was fascinating and really well done. They had artifacts of local coffee-confectioners and stories about how it connected to the local economy and culture. If you like learning all about where you are staying this museum is worth it to see a broad spectrum of what makes Salzburg what it is today. I didn’t bring my kids with me for this, but could see the various interactive exhibits on music, coffee, residents, and others that could help make it interesting for kids.Visited July 2022Traveled soloWritten July 21, 2022

Good to buzz through and even better if it's hot or raining outside. Breeze through and take your time.Visited July 2019Written June 1, 2020
- suttondg1Whissendine, United Kingdom116 contributionsOne of the most boring museums ever been toI think we finished this in 15 minutes! What a disjointed museum and not very interesting either. Went to the basement first where had a coffee shop exhibition. In German and not very interesting. Rest was just as bad. Thank goodness we had the Salzburg card as would not have been happy paying for this. Far better things to spend your time seeing.Visited April 2022Written April 29, 2022

- PeppermintcityPlymouth, United Kingdom38 contributionsNice museum but beware the steward on the ground floor! We made a spur of the moment decision to pop into the Salzburg Museum as it was one of the attractions included on our Salzburg Card and we were curious about the history of the city. We were made very welcome and the children were given activity packs which they loved. The kids activities were interactive and the children were engaged with the museum. However, on visiting the exhibition on the ground floor, both children were severely reprimanded for sitting on the floor (one to read a exhibit label, and the other to listen to music on headphones). Neither of them were causing disturbance to other visitors (of whom there were few), blocking the access or otherwise drawing attention to themselves. Up until this point they had both been enjoying the museum, and couldn't understand what they had done wrong. We left shortly afterwards. What a shame that the good work that someone is obviously doing to help to engage children with the museum is being undermined by unnecessarily grumpy staff.Visited August 2015Traveled with familyWritten August 23, 2015

- MinnesotaMartha101 contributionsFantastic, especially Anschluss exhibitI usually like this kind of small local museum, but this was even better than most. Their thoughtful exhibit of the museum's complicity with the Nazis was something that will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it.Visited March 2018Traveled with familyWritten March 15, 2018

The museum tries to be "modern", with many flat screens and audio visually enhanced exhibits. The overall appearance, however, is chaotic. It seems that everything that could somehow be considered "Salzburg" was included. In particular the exhibits from the last few decades were not really "special" but only vamped up with "light and sound".
If one has to choose, the "Dom Quartier" Museum should definitely be given priority over the "Salzburg Museum".
