We just finished a trip throughout Alpine Europe visiting Christmas markets and can attest to the quality of the Salzburg Christkindl Markt. Many markets have little more than holiday food and drink, while others have nothing more than a tired assortment of second-hand crafts that have little or nothing to do with Christmas, and could just as easily be at a summer solstice fair, e.g. dream catchers, sand-drip candles and macrame.

Salzburg's Christmas Market, on the other hand, has stall after stall filled with decorations hand made by craftsmen and -women from the town and from the Salzkammergut. Not only that, but ornaments and decorations unique to Salzburg: hand-painted blown-glass ornaments depicting scenes from Salzburg, its churches, its castle fortress, its monuments. These are one-of-a-kind items the likes of which we did not see in any other markets we encountered in our travels.

Finally, Salzburg is fortunate to have such fine public spaces for their Christmas market. The great open squares called into existence by the prince-bishops of Salzburg have known many functions in earlier days. But none more festive and more joyous than the Christmas markets of our own day and time.

We had a spare night in Salzburg and this was a good option. I’m not a fan of mulled wine but some stalls did a hot Jameson whiskey with apple which was beautiful. The stalls have a lot of Christmas decorations if you like that sort of stuff.

We hit Salzburg just after the Christkindle markets opened. You can't get more amazing or perfect than this. The food, the hot wine, the crafts and booths.... It's just perfect. There's no other way to describe it. Take your time, enjoy yourself and be sure to get your souvenir mug full of mulled or hot wine/gluhwein. It's the best (and cheapest!) souvenir you can get. Be sure to bring cash to pay for things, as most booths don't have the ability to accept credit cards.

Also, if you go in early December, be sure to catch the Krampus festival. It's not scary and great for the entire family. The costumes are amazing and it's truly just a fantastic show and parade. I'll note here that we went to several Krampus parades and Salzburg was by far the best.... some others made me think a human sacrifice was just around the corner, but Salsburg's wasn't like that at all.

I can't say enough good things about it and you really must experience the entire thing for yourself. A must-see!

When visiting Salzburg, consider visiting Residenzplatz. Which is one of the famous squares to visit in the Old Town. This is exactly where the residence building of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg and the Salzburg Cathedral are located.

This is a great location to visit, here's why. First, the architecture and history bring charm to the square. Second, the Residenz Fountain is considered one of the most significant baroque monuments in Europe. The Italian sculptor, Tommaso di Garone is the craftsman behind it all.

Above all, the fountain is renown and famous for another reason. That's because it was one of the filming location for the famous movie “The Sound of Music”! You might have heard of it. Yet many tourists visit Salzburg for the Sound of Music tour.

Furthermore, feel free to check out our :

Recommend: Yes, really beautiful square and fountain.

Tips

Just wear comfortable shoes to walk around. Also consider a jacket during springtime.

I visited in summer and the plaza had several stalls and inflatable bouncy castles for the children. Great for quick snack or for a short break to rest your tired feet and take in the history surrounding the square.

Lovely city square, all cobblestone, you can hire a horse drawn carriage tour of the city.

Plenty of shops and restaurant/bars to sit around and watch the world go by as the wife spends your money.

All the shops, cobblestones, alleyways, vendors, statues, monuments, fountains...Salzburg really has it all and it's all clean and well tended to. It's just a beautiful area to stroll and window shop or make a few nice purchases!

I was here in the summer and the market was very small. I did love the pretzel booth. The other few seemed to sell tourist things. Still it was fine.

The square starts to come to life again in the afternoon of New Years Eve with everyone assembling, drinking, eating and being merry and come midnight it’s alive with people dancing and enjoying themselves.
