We went there with two sceptical teenagers which have seen already everything and weren't sure they will enjoy. But it was indeed a pleasure - nice atmosphere, a great friendly guide providing English explanations, two funny rides on wooded slides. The waiting time to buy tickets and to enter the mines was totally OK. The exhibitions at the stops were interesting and easily understandable. Not too long, not too short - just a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours in a hot summer day.

Travelling in a party of four particularly interested in modern history we booked the Eagles nest tour online for our visit in late October. We were very disappointed when we were told the trip had closed early for the winter because of bad weather. (This does happen quite often apparently). However Peter at the desk suggested we take the Bavarian mountain tour instead and depending on numbers it could be customised for us. We were delighted when we found we were the only customers and were taken out by Helmut in a transit van. He took us to Berchtesgarden and then the site of the Berghof which we spent some time exploring and admiring the views. His knowledge of the area and history was amazing - we learnt so much. Then he took us to a snowfield with an amazing view of the Eagles Nest and at our request he took us to the documentation centre which contained some of the tunnels built by the nazis. It was an thoroughly enjoyable trip which was a high spot of our visit to the beautiful city of Salzburg. Full marks to Gray Line Salzburg Tours.

We purposely went to Salzburg on our European tour just to do the Sound of Music Tour. Ours was booked through our AAA Agent via Travel Bound, this one being through Grey Line Tours. Got us one of the "Original" Sound of Music tours, of which there are multiple. Long story, but we were told the Grey Line Tours were the original, and their bus company - Albus - was used in the film. We even got our pictures taken with the hat worn by the bus driver who drove the character Maria in the movie. Anyway, David, our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the movie, as well as the story of the genuine VonTrapp Family. David "educated" us on the reality vs. the movie, with references to the book written by Maria VonTrapp, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers," and a DVD (possibly) about the making of the Sound of Music.

The tour does the best it can with a large bus full of people maneuvering the sharp turns and narrow streets of Salzburg. I believe that I got enough of tour to go back and better explore some of the facts that were pointed out during the tour but we couldn't access by bus. David actually told us how to get to the various places, which public buses to take, streets to walk up, etc.

I can't compare to any of the other "original" SoM tours, but it seems like they provide the same 4-hour tour, locations to visit, about the same price, as we met up with a competitor's tour bus in Monsee, the location of the wedding scene in the movie.

One thing to remember: The movie version of "The Sound of Music" was a Hollywood movie. The movie version, which was based on the Broadway musical of the same name, was "based" on the book by Maria VonTrapp. HOWEVER, as all Hollywood movies are "enhanced" to make better story, many factual things of their life were changed - which can be found all over the Internet. Scenes were shot in and around Salzburg, but, as Hollywood generally does, it makes changes to enhance locations, story lines, as well as camera angles. Some may be disenchanted learning the "real" story, others greatly entertained. One instance is that in the movie we see the VonTrapp family leaving Salzburg and climbing a mountain off to Switzerland. The Swiss border is over 300 miles from Salzburg, and they actually left Salzburg by train to perform in Italy.

So, all and all, if you're still reading, the tour is enlightening, entertaining, will include a sing-along, so have fun and enjoy the tour! (We did not stop at the luge mentioned in other reviews.)

If important to you: When the bus stops at a location, there are always WC (restrooms) available - and no charge!

Tour guide was less than helpful. We were rushed at sights. The first stop was to be the Mirabell Gardens. We weren't given the opportunity to see them until the end our tour. After the bus was parked, we were shown the gate and told a couple of things to look for. Also, at the Church of Mondsee, we were sent in for a quick look with the guide catching a cup of coffee at a nearby cafe. I only wish this tour had been reviewed earlier so I could avoid it. We received very little information from our guide. We knew more from a book we had purchased earlier.

We went on the GrayLine Tour of the Sound of Music and NOT the Panorama Tour.

The guide completely debunked any notions of originality and on several occasions came out with statements which were at variance with that which we had heard on a previous SoM tour in Salzburg by GrayLine.

The tour is scheduled for 4 hours and if one subtracts the time one is allowed to stay at Mornsee the tour has little or no substance , if my memory is correct we alighted the coach on only four occasions and we were both glad to get off of the coach. And to cap it all there is the push for a gratuity for the "Drive" forcing passengers only one exit route off the bus whereas during the trip the rear doors were kept open. Given the cost I thought that was a cheek.

Any chance you get to go up on the Alps... TAKE IT!
The views as you go up are unbelievable. Being at the top of the mountain is unreal. It is a feeling that is hard to explain unless you have experienced it.

We went on two gray line tours while in Europe. This one was the worst, we took the Munich-Salzburg guided tour...big mistake. I don't even know where to start. We were on a double decker bus that was quite full. The bathroom was "broken" and the smell was awful. Once we arrived, there were so many people that only a few could hear and the guide didn't have a microphone. About 20 minutes into the tour, we realized we had lost our group. Our guide had given us a meeting point thankfully. On the return, we had to stop at a gas station for a bathroom we had to pay for. All in all, we got a bus ride for the price of a tour ticket. Very disappointing

We loved this tour, my children have great memories of this tour. My daughter even sang all the songs on the bus.
The Tour Guide is great full of information and he has the answer on just about anything based on the film Sound of Music. He is American and lives and does these tours in Salzburg for a living now.
Great Value. It would be good to know before you head on the tour that all inside scenes of the movie are filmed in the studios in America so you will only get to see the outside scenes. The Place of the Von Trapp family is a private residence so you will be only able to see it from the road.
The entrance to the Abbey is not part of the tour that is separate thing you can do in your own time or book another tour of the town of Salzburg.
You will get to see 1 of the gazebos, the balcony, the bike scene, the lake scene etc alot of the places you will see from the bus but the gazebo, lake, and the church you will get to walk around a little.
The church in Mondsee is where the wedding was held and they have a souvenir shop this is where you will able to purchase Sound of Music related items. Austrians aren't big on the movie so don't expect to see a flock of shops around with related items.

Did the lakes and mountains tour which was awesome lots of time to look around ans relax on the lake cruise. The next day I went on the Bavarian alps "tour" it turned out to be just transportation. We were driven from Salzburg to the salt mines two people went in they were told we'll be back in an hour, then I was taken to do the lake cruise. The guide didn't know the cruise was 2 hrs long
so I was told to get off at the first stop and come back on the returning boat. On returning we went to pick up the other couple at the mines and were driven back to Salzburg. That wasn't a tour it was transportation. An 840 bus from Salzburg takes you to the lake for $5 return.

This is the ORIGINAL Sound of Music Tour as Maris took these buses in the movie! David the tour guide was amazing and made the 4 hours fly by! He knew everything there was to know about the movie and gave us little known facts about the soundtrack and the movie! He even sang for us!! We visited most of the sights but some sadly are non-accessible since they are now private residences. I'm glad we did this in our first day so we had time to go back and see some of the sights again. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who goes to Salzburg!
