- Paul MDownpatrick, United Kingdom74 contributionsWorth a visitWalk around the beautiful Mirabell gardens and if you are a fan of The Sound of music film you will see where parts of the movie were filmed in the gardens around the fountain and the steps. The Mirabell Palace is now a government building but still wot a visit and great photo opportunity. We also had the opportunity to book a evening inside the Palace to see a classical Mozart performance with a 5 piece violins, viola, cello, double base and piano. The performance was first class and lasted approximately two hours. Ticket prices are around €35 and worth every penny. The performance is in one of the beautiful decorated gilted rooms which added to the ambience. I think there are many differ performances most nights I recommend a visit to the Palace and Gardens and if you can get to see a classical performance you will not be disappointed.Visited February 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten February 28, 2020
- tmomma11Roanoke, Virginia89 contributionsExquisite Gardens - A Must SeeWhether or not you are a big "Sound of Music" fan, this place is beautiful and worth the visit. It's an added bonus, however if you love the movie. The best time to go is when the flowers are in bloom. We went in August and the gardens were filled with flowers everywhere. The gardens are beautifully decorated and landscaped with flowers, shrubs, fountains and statues. If you head towards the back of the gardens, there is a smaller upper part of the gardens accessible by steps. From the gardens you can get a great view of the Fortress Hohensalzburg up on the hill. The palace is mostly used as a government building, but it does hold concerts as well. Most of the palace is off limits, however there are areas of the palace that you can walk through. The palace is quite exquisite with its marble and sculptures. When we went, there was a small shaded area just before the entrance of the gardens to get a snack and/or drink. Mirabell Palace and Gardens are a must visit while in Salzburg. It is beautiful and free. It doesn't cost anything to walk the grounds or the palace.Visited August 2019Written January 22, 2020
- Wayne OPretoria, South Africa57 contributionsPeaceful and interestingThe gardens are obviously not at their best in winter. The Sound of Music scenes from various portions of the Gardens make them very interesting. Beautiful statues including two unicorns at the one gate's entrance. The Castle was closed when I visited but it may have been because I was too early? Easy to walk to from the Old Town. I also visited these Gardens a few years ago in the summer and they were gorgeous with lovely flowers in intricate beds and well manicured lawns.Visited January 2020Written January 26, 2020
- Denny SGothenburg, Sweden184 contributionsA sunny dayVery nice garden in baroque style (like everything else in Salzburg) and a part of the Historic Centre. Did not visit the palace with its famous Marble Hall and Angel Staircase so this review only applies to the park. It feels really worth walking around the park for a couple of hours because it contains a lot of beautiful things to look at. Fine fountains, including the Pegaus Fountain which appears in the film Sound of Music and the Grand Fountain which symbolizes the four seasons. There is also a rose garden, an orangery and a very odd collection of figures in what is called the Dwarf Garden. It is a bit remote from the rest of the park but is well worth a visit, especially if you have children with you.Visited April 2022Written April 28, 2022

You don’t have to be a fan of the musical to enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The baroque style palace is easily one of the most stunning landmarks in the city. - MarcusHurleyCalne, United Kingdom9,462 contributionsBeautifully ornate gardensThis was another Austrian palace with superb ornate gardens including a dwarf garden (statues of dwarves being all the rage!), fountains and an orangery. The dwarf garden was certainly a novelty and the rest of the gardens were typically formal, certainly none of the Capabilty Brown style natural settings - this was nature controlled. The gardens were clean and well maintained and had the backdrop of Salzburg Fortress. Entry was free.Visited July 2020Written August 3, 2020

I did not tour the palace as it was not open for a tour at the time and many of the rooms are off limits, you can see the staircase and main room was beinf prepared for a concert. The garden is a place where many of the sites were used during the filming of the Sound of Music specifically the Do-Re-Mi song. The exterior garden is beautiful with views of the Fortress and the Alps, including the famed Sound Of Music shot. Mirabell itself is an easy walk from most of Salzburg old town as it is right across the river. This is also an awesome place to take a coffee break while enjoying Salzburg on a good weather day.Visited March 2022Written March 23, 2022

Our favorite part were the dwarf statues, though it's sad so many are missing or damaged. The palace is lovely from the outside, though of course you can only go in if you're seeing a concert there, which we did not.Visited June 2022Written July 17, 2022

The gardens were free to enter and although compact, were beautiful to see including the familiar movie scenery for Sound of Music fans. On a hot day, it was great to sit in a shady spot - away from the crowds and take it in. Unfortunately the palace was closed on the day we visited. (On Tuesdays and Fridays it is open from 1 pm until 4 pm) but it also free to visit.

It’s worth a visit however, we visited during December (winter season) so were not allowed to enter in some parts of the garden. They close it every winter season to preserve it. You can still walk through the sides though.

A must see for all Tourists as it's in between Salzburg train station and the main city of Salzburg. The gardens with the fountains, flowers, trees and statues, the contrast between the green grass, red and yellow flowers and the gray/white statues. Loved it especially with the late summer sun.

When does the garden close? Can I walk around the garden around 9-11PM? I heard that the garden looks better at night. Planning to visit in July, by the way. Thanks!

It is not fenced and in the middle of town. I don't think it closes, but there could be a city ordinance. 9-11PM should be just fine. We were just there a couple months ago.
