Spectacular Salzburg views from the top
Nice views from the top. We were lucky to have a sunny day. Funicular is right in the middle of town. Very short duration but worth it although with 14 euros for an adult slight on expensive side but it does include most of the areas of the castle. Children 6-14 need a ticket 5.70 euros

Def. a Must see in Salzburg
Funicular up and down- cool exhibit on the phases of construction over 1500 years, extra fee to get to ‘state rooms’ that should just be included in the first place. view from the panoramic tower is cool. Restaurant on panoramic view is nice.

Hard hike up and down but totally worth it❤️
Wow! Wow! Wow! My family and I hiked all the way to the top to the fortress. Kids ages (3,5,8,10,11, and 13) It was a hard hike (they complained) but totally worth it. On the way to the top there are little stores and a water fountain to fill your water bottles. I wasn’t going to go inside but once we got to the top we decided to go in and it was totally worth it!! The view from the top and exploring the different rooms were cool. The kids ran around and got some energy out. I didn’t think the kids would enjoy it, BUT they loved it!! Quick tip though: if you buy tickets at the bottom it included the sky lift up and down. I didn’t know that. So we hiked up-I thought we can take it down. But we ended up leaving through a difference entrance and missed it so we had to hike down 😭 Poor kids. It’s a hard hike up and down but totally doable and worth the time and energy.

Incredible feeling to be somewhere so old.
This was a great experience to be somewhere with so much history. The fortress is huge and is like a small village. We took the funicular to the top which was interesting. The museums we entered with the basic ticket were fine but not large. The views of the city were incredible.

A good 1/2 day with views of the city and museums
The Fortress overlooks the city and is a part of the Prince archbishop hisorty of control in the region. Go early to see the treasure rooms and use the funicular to get to the top. You can walk down and save your legs. The museums are good.

    Incredible!
This is well worth your time! The castle is extensive. We did the panoramic tour which includes your ticket to the top and entrance to all parts of the interior museum. Have lunch at the top and overlook Salzburg and the mountains. You won’t regret it.

    MUST DO THIS
What an amazing place. 1000 years of history in one short walk. If you want the best experience. Hike up the hill instead of taking the train. You get an idea of what made the fortress so formidable.

    Great views!
We decided to tour the fortress first and then walk back through Salzburg on our quick 6 hours in Salzburg. The funicular was fun and beautiful to take on the way up and great to learn about how it worked prior to being electrified. Once in the fortress, we took in the views and they are stunning! We climbed the stairs to the lookout, which gives you an amazing perspective of why the fortress was built in that location and the formidable position it provided. On the way down you get a small lesson about the instrument on the wall and how Mozart’s father worked at the fortress and was a composer himself. We walked down out of the fortress and we accidentally took a right instead of a left, so we missed the walking trail that we were looking for. The walk down is extremely steep but small makeshift stairs are provided along the side. Overall, not a must visit, but a great place to visit to take in the views of Salzburg.

Amazing castle having the best best view of Salzburg and I to the mountains of Austria.
We took the lift up and saw 3 of the 4 exhibitions. The best part was the views of the town and to the mountains. But we also enjoyed seeing some historical exhibitions with knights, armor and other things but did not go in details. You can spend a lot of time or do as us and glide through- still we enjoyed every minute. We walked down and it was very steep and in rear view mirror it would have been better taking the lift. Highly recommend

    Amazing castle to visit.
One of my bucket list items was to visit an old European castle. Fortress HohenSalzburg was built in 1077 and remains in amazing condition. It feels as if hasn't changed in 500 years. We enjoyed a great dinner on the terrace, followed by a concert of Mozart's music in the Grand Hall (where Mozart himself performed!). The views from the Fortress (castle) are amazing as well. Highly recommend.

The tower sits on top of a cliff and dominates the City skyline. It is dramatic from a distance and interesting once you get inside, especially as regards the way the fortress was build for defensive purposes. The best part is the view from the watchtower - dramatic views of the City and the Alps. Great photo op.

When I went, the funicular was down for maintenance so I walked up. I recommend walking up if you are in decent shape, it makes the experience more enjoyable and there are some nice things to see on the way up.

Go to the funicular station and purchase a family "all-inclusive" ticket, climb to the castle by the funicular and enjoy everything you can visit and see there. The "full" visit, including all the available roomsand museums lasts about 3 hours. Impressions guaranteed for kids and adults. Do not forget to visit the marionette museum at the end.

You can walk up but most people take the funicular which takes a few minutes. I suggest you book on line to avoid the queues which can get large by mid day and we went January 3rd when things were getting quiet. But it’s worth the trip up to see the old fortress and it’s many exhibits as well as getting some amazing views of the city and beyond.

When we visited Salzburg in early 2018 with my family, I definitely had to do the tour of the Majestic Fortress that overlooks the city. Everything was so beautifully preserved, giving an experience that could have been 100s of years ago!
The Funicular ride up and down was fun, especially for our daughter! The ride was included in the price of the tickets and they were not at all expensive.
There were lots of cool exhibits, lots of cannons, and even a great deal of history and explanation of the fortress.
The Fortress is kind of a mini village. There are quite a few terraces with turrets. And last but not least is the beautiful view of the mountains in the background...so stunning.
I was here before (this is my 2nd visit) and will definitely be coming here again the next time I visit Salzburg

Our first visit attempt failed due to poor weather, the next day we tried again and it was worth it. Great views over the City even though it must be the coldest place. We travelled to various locations outside the city, which also gave views of the fortress from other angles.

There's two options to reach the place.
Walking (free of charge) or using funicular (13 Euro - Museums plus funicular round trip)
Highly recommend to visit.
Also there is a nice restaurant - "Panorama" (capuchino 4.30 Euro)
Take bottle of water with you, which you can refill almost everywhere.
Also comfortable shoes it would be great choice.
Enjoy your time there.

Had a fabulous day exploring the fortress. So much to see! Would suggest you buy the all inclusive ticket if you have a few hours to explore - it allows you into all of the museums. Lots of history. The views are spectacular. Lunch at the Fortress panoramic restaurant was delicious. I had the Jumbo Kartoffelin with smoked salmon. A baked potato with a yummy sauce and smoked salmon and a salad - fun presentation.

We took the Hop On Hop Off to the #3 stop and walked to the Fortress. It's approximaetly a 5-10 minute walk. We took the vernacular up versus walking becuase it was raining that day. The Fortress is great with lots of displays and gorgous views of the city. The first part is guided and uses audio to talk about the various displays/rooms. I felt a little rushed in this part only becuase the guide kept telling us we had to go before the audio portion had finished. Otherwise, it was well worth the visit. Loved it.

What made Salzburg great was its super defensive position that was anchored by a tremendous fortress on a hill that dominates the city. This fortress was the community's refuge and it never fell. While our family saw it the entire day we walk the city below, my son and I visited the fortress while my wife and daughter did the Sound of Music tour. This may work for your family as well. My son and I definitely thought we got the better end of that.

We had the Salzburg Card, so the ride up the funicular was free. Once on top, the views from the ramparts were amazing, not only of the city but the surrounding mountains as well. While the ramparts are good, there is a tower that is also included in the card that gives you even better views, especially 360.

While there don't miss the fortress itself that has a church and castle and other odd museums like the marionette museum. There is a reason this is number 2 attraction. You simply Must do

We visited on a Sunday morning around 10am and that was great as wasn’t busy until we were leaving. Planned to spend about 1 hour here but ended up with 2 as there was lots to see. The self guided audio tour of the State Rooms and main building were very interesting and worthwhile to understand more about the history.
We caught the funicular up (a very short ride but included in Salzburg Card) and walked down.
Very little is heated so by the end of the 2 hours I was feeling the cold (5 degrees) so make sure you dress warmly and expect to do a lot of walking.
Most is not accessible as there is a lot of climbing.
The climb up to the viewing tower is definitely worthwhile for the great panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.
