I started working in Tourism in 2010 by riding a Rikscha. In 2018 I finished tour guide school and proudly presented the first free walking tours to Salzburg. Equipped with the necessary knowledge we are now a team of guides keen on meeting and guiding you. Not everybody in Salzburg can organize guided tours through the city. You need to have a strong knowledge that gets tested by different city officials, the study itself has a duration of 3 semesters and costs every guide at least 4.000€.
Still, you get this tour for the price/budget that you choose. The team comes with this idea as they used to work together in a hostel, knowing that not everybody can effort trips in the city they love.
Would recommend this to anybody who comes to Salzburg, not only because they are official city guides with profound knowledge, but more Salzburg lovers and open-minded and passionated travellers.
Still, you get this tour for the price/budget that you choose. The team comes with this idea as they used to work together in a hostel, knowing that not everybody can effort trips in the city they love.
Would recommend this to anybody who comes to Salzburg, not only because they are official city guides with profound knowledge, but more Salzburg lovers and open-minded and passionated travellers.

Sonja was excellent. Knowledgeable, amusing, and extremely good at putting her subject across in an interesting way. A very varied group (young, older, singles, couples and from all over the world), she found something to interest everyone. Given how cold it was, she kept us moving without feeling rushed. A really good way to spend 1.5 hours. I recommend you do this at the beginning of your stay as it helps you get your bearings and gives you excellent pointers on what to visit in more depth.

We had an excellent tour of Salzburg with Leo who was engaging, personable and informative, He showed us all the major sights and gave a number of recommendations including the fortress which was great. The view from the top allowed us to see the Alps and all of Salzburg laid out beneath us. We particularly enjoyed singing Edelweiss at the rear of the festival hall. You pay a fair price for the tour and if you compare prices with a personal guide it is brilliant. Remember you are getting an expert for two hours and if possible should be tipped accordingly, He made occasional references to the Sound of Music which was well received. His tip to try the Augustine bier Kellar was taken up and a great night of Austrian hospitality was had.

Johannes (John) was a fabulous guide; he speaks fluent German and English. Online registration is required prior to the tour as there are limited spaces. The tour started on time and we received a map with key landmarks. We took the tour on our 3rd day in Salzburg; eventho we had walked by most of the sites in the first 2 dsys, John's endless stories brought the history of Salzburg to live. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and John's humor. We highly recommend this tour!

Leo was a great guide and very knowledgeable. It was definitely a very different experience when we sang as a group a music from Sound of Music movie and when Leo personated the special shout to trick the Devil. However, after being in many Free Walking Tours and even understanding the need to explain how the tour works and the expectation for a tip or so some sort of payment I thought it was not necessary to mention the cost of the exam to become a guide and unfair to suggest a certain minimum amount to pay as the concept of free tour is for anyone to pay the amount they feel comfortable with/are able to afford/ or within what value they feel the tour had. My friend and I enjoyed the tour especially the added suggestions on what more to visit in Salzburg and the map in the end was a very helpful.

We have already done a “free walking tour” in one city or another, but the super informative and entertaining Salzburg version of Birgit clearly stands out - and that is meant to be 100% positive. Birgit combines a huge knowledge of with a love of Salzburg, is also funny and approachable and obviously enjoys this thing. Unrestrictedly recommended.

Leo was a knowledgeable and engaging guide. He had an entertaining and interactive style that was low key and effective. Generally he could be heard quite easily in the midst of city sounds. The tour touched on many of the city's historical and cultural highlights and gave a good overview of things to see and do. Highly recommend.

Sonja was an excellent guide! We had a wonderful time thanks to her showing us around the city. We would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a nice start to learn about the city and their historical inhabitants! It was a friendly, informative and fun tour to go on. The group was also not so large and Sonja took extra care to make sure we all could understand her and not going to fast for the group. Thanks again to Sonja and keep up the great work!

A great 1.5-2 hour tour led by Leo who made it both entertaining and informative. You will be introduced the history of this beautiful city and be amazed at how knowledgeable the tour guide was. In addition to knowing the history of the city, you would also get recommendations on local restaurants/cafes, which is always a plus point for solo travellers like me.
I'd say if even you are only in Salzburg for a short time, definitely add this tour to your itinerary, it will give you a brief idea of what the city has to offer.
P.S. A big hand to Leo for still continuing the tour even it's raining cats and dogs!! I have to say this is the best customer service I've ever came across ahahhahha

This was a fascinating & informative tour of Salzburg from Sonja. Her knowledge was excellent & she took time to explain any questions asked and the whole group seemed as enthralled as I was. Even if you have to been to Salzburg before, this is one tour I would recommend to take time to enjoy what the city & it's history has to offer. A BIG thank you Sonja.

Hello Jeffrey, yes, 5-10 Euros per person is the average, but of course, it's always up to the individual, what their budget is and how they value their experience. A few people tip slightly more and very few people tip slightly less.

I only have one day in Salzburg and am arriving in the morning from Vienna by train. I’m considering this tour in the morning and then a Sound of Music Tour in the afternoon. Is that a good plan to make the most of my one day in Salzburg or would you recommend a different plan?

As Catherine pointed out, the Sound of Music Tour takes you to the surroundings of Salzburg. My tour introduces you to the Old Town of Salzburg and the history of the city. They don't overlap, so your plan is very good. You can do the walking tour in the morning and there is a Sound of Music Tour at 2 pm.
Anyway. I am hoping we all will be able to travel and live a normal life again soon. I hope you stay healthy and well.

Hola, gracias para la pregunta. Un tour privado seria posible, si. Para el espanol tendria que buscar guia. Est que toures privadas son €120,- entonces seria un poco caro para dos personas. Normalmente toures privadas son para grupos mas grandes y los que viajan individualmente se juntan con el grupo de los free tours. Tambien tengo vuestra email. thank you for your interest in the tour. People usually either give €5,- or €10,-.
In my opinion it should depend on peoples budget. If someone doesn't tip, it's also fine and I would assume there is a reason.
After all I shouldn't call it "free", if I would expect a certain amount of money. So it really is up to you.

Thank you for your interest in the tour. The meeting point is at the spirit of Mozart artwork by Marina Abramovic. There is a detailed description of the meeting point on the front page of the website. At the moment all the tours leave at 9am but that might change depending on the season.
You can sign up on the tours section of the website seven days before the tour starts. There is a schedule on the tours page where you can sign up with your name and your email adress. You will get a booking confirmation with all the details once you signed up.
