- travfromLALos Angeles, California284 contributionsA Dream Fulfilled...This place had been on my bucket list for years. For one reason mainly. The connection to the Sound of Music. But don't let that deter you even if you never saw the movie! The setting just happens to be on the lake where a key scene in the movie was filmed. The Villa facing that lake is quite special. The hotel rooms in the adjacent building are simple and basic, but very clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a Four Seasons type experience, this is not it. But if you want to experience a feeling of the past and enjoy the seclusion and quiet setting on many acres, you will love it. Other reviews talk about the amazing breakfast which is served in an amazing room. That is in fact, worth the stay. The room is amazing. All of the rooms in the Villa are open to guests to walk through and the grounds are also only for guests to roam. I would go back again as not only was this a very enjoyable stay but Salzburg in general was fantastic. An absolutely charming town to visit during the Holiday season. Their Holiday Xmas Market was the most authentic feeling of all the markets I visited in December.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 27, 2024
- Lyndsay D35 contributionsWOW! What a hotel. This was a truly amazing hotel which is a 20 minute walk from the centre of Salzburg. It’s a wonderful hotel to retreat to after a busy sightseeing day as its tranquility and charm it out of this world being by the lake with view of the snow capped mountains - stunning! I will definitely return. We only had the cheapest room in the annexe but it was very comfortable and quiet. A bit dark but that was ok you only sleep there! The main palace of the hotel is where you have the breakfast which I have to say is probably the best setting you can imagine, with views to die for. If you stay here you are so spoilt being allowed to visit the building palace where some of The Sound of Music was filmed. The rooms are stunning. The breakfast is incredible. The staff excellent in every way. We will definitely be back and we highly recommend.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 12, 2024
- Travel with SeanMadison, Wisconsin23 contributionsBeautiful Lakefront PalaceSchloss Leopoldskron was the filming location for the back of the Von Trapp home. It was built in 1736 to be the home of Salzburg prince-archbishop Leopold von Firmian. The prince-archbishop loved this palace so much, that when he died, he had his heart buried in the palace’s chapel. It’s a beautiful home on a beautiful lake with the ancient Festung Hohensalzburg (Hohensalzburg Fortress) in the background. Nowadays, other than being a tourist attraction, it is a vacation rental and an event venue.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024

You either need to stay the night or go for dinner, check the website. If you go to the other side of the lake you still can get a really good view.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 13, 2024
- Juliana JSao Paulo, SP729 contributionsSpecial emotional connectionVisit from June 2024. We stayed 3 nights in this hotel and loved it. I chose this hotel as a surprise to my mom, a huge fan of the Sound of the Music. Turns out I ended up enjoying as much as her, you don’t need to be a fan to appreciate the beautiful gardens, having breakfast outdoors in the balcony seeing mountains with top covered in snow or in the beautiful palace that was the ball room in the movie. Speaking of breakfast, absolutely generous, delicious, so many options ( even Prossecco is part of the treat), with the most amazing service. They wait on you with a smile, what a way to enchant a guest on vacation. I forgot the name of this waiter, a lady from Romania, she’s been working in the hotel for over 20 years (I should have written down her name), everyday she did her job with such joy… what a way to start the day. The palace is open for visitation, nice place to stroll through the rooms. Walking distance to a few restaurants but definitely you need a car. We stayed in the annex building, good room but honestly in need for a renovation (we found silver fish in our bedrooms every night), which made me sad, I’d hope the mantainance would be better.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 31, 2024
- tandjandersonSydney, Australia6 contributionsExtend your Sound of Music experience and stay in a palace! What a place to stay - history and Hollywood merge. Stayed here after a memorable Sound of Music tour to enjoy a little more of the movie up close and personal. Champagne by the warm fire, breakfast in the main ballroom and exploring the grounds used in the film. Lovely stay and very comfy bedsVisited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 16, 2024

Exploring each room to see what I could unearth was a highlight of my stay. In the Library, I discovered a secret stairwell I also found offices, a stealthy elevator, and a few spare rooms that could be rented out as temporary housing. You should go to the Library.

Nice hotel. Great breakfast is served in the castle with a beautiful view on the lake and mountains. The rooms in the hotel are oke. however in summertime can be pretty warm as there is no air-conditioning, only a van. Temperature at night was therefor still around the 25 degrees Celsius. Free bike rental at the hotel is really convenient. Salzburg city center is also on walking distance.

We initially stayed at Schloss Leopoldskron because of The Sound of Music's location and beauty. Upon staying there we learned of the historic nature of the location and its location/proximity to old town Salzburg is perfect. The grounds are quiet, beautiful, and very dog friendly! Highly highly recommend staying here!

My daughter and I walked here from Salzburg cathedral. It said 25 minutes but took significantly longer. Most of it was up extremely steep hills and steps and my daughter wanted us to turn back. If you can find a bus route then take it. However when we arrived it was really beautiful and of course one to tick off the Sound of Music list. There was a bus stop just at the entrance so we got a bus back into Salzburg.

We left Salzburg city centre with gmaps telling us we had a 25 min walk ahead, but it took us more than an hour to see the schloss from across the lake, and the walk had some significant uphill stretches. However, it was definitely worth it for the view of the schloss over the water. We sat for some time and just took it in. It was stunning in the late afternoon light. There were ducks and swans. We took a bus back and for anyone concerned with accessibility, this is definitely the way to go - the no. 5 bus has a stop about 10-15 minutes' walk away (Nissenstrasse I believe) and the walk from there is much flatter. If you're up for the longer walk, though, it was well-maintained and pretty.
