Beautiful location, great view of the villa. We didn't do the tour, so you can't go inside the house, but you can walk around the lake and see the exterior at the back. We walked here from the castle, which was a bit of a hike through a field/park. I have seen other reviews where people took a taxi. After having done the walk both directions, I would probably pay for the taxi if you have the funds.

Came here as part of the Sound of Visit tour. A quaint place. Loved the reflections of the buildings on the water. Best to visit early in the morning.

It was fun to see the lake and remember scenes from The Sound of Music, but it wasn't really worth the taxi to/from town. Definitely not walkable and had to have the hotel call us a taxi to get back.

Visited here as part of the Sound of Music Tour via bus and enjoyed the scenery. The area was quite tranquil. Again this was one of the spots where part of the movie was filmed.

OMG! Google Map, Linienfahrplan (bus route map), and paper maps; none of them gave accurate information on which bus to get to this little lake! What a nightmare!
If you decide to go there by bus, I strongly recommend you talk to the hotel concierge and get a detailed, detailed description on how to get there!
There are two key spots: across the lake from the (Hollywood) von Trapp house, where you can take a photo of the house, the gate with the stone horses, and the lake where Maria and the children fell into; the backyard of the house where many scenes from the movie were shot. Find out EXACTLY how to get there by bus.

You don't have to be a fan of "The Sound of Music" to love this view. Pull up aside the lake, set yourself up so that Leopoldskron is framed up by a snow-capped mountain, and just enjoy. Pure white, snow white, a reflected sky, and a fringe of green. It will be the photo of the trip!
Unfortunately, no access inside unless you are staying at the hotel.

I can't imagine a better place to stay while experiencing Salzburg. On the beautiful grounds of a palace that was the home to the famous Max Reinhardt. Unfortunately WWII and the Nazis took it away from him and used it as a place of residence during the war but after the war it returned to them and Max Reinhardt's widow offered it to be part of a global seminar series which continues to this day.
That series is great for the hotel visitors as it means there are always interesting guests staying and speaking on the property (although not sure if the guests can attend the lectures), we did meet some of them while eating breakfast.
The hotel also offers bicycles for the guests to take into the city which is a fantastic way to get around in the beautiful countryside.
If you can, you will want to stay in the old building as it still retains the palatial feel while the new building feels more like a standard hotel.
