There is a very superficial check of Covid Pass und Ticket, no check up with passport at all. Telling the theatre people that there are people sitting on balcony with no masks does not give them any interest in changing this. They did nothing, just answered something like „well, then we should check AFTER the show“. Unbelievable those people.

Visited the Show: The Sound of Music on February 22. The theater itself, very centrally located just opposite Hotel Sacher (so better take public transport to get there, there are lots of buslines stopping just in front of the theater) is a gem by itself, but the show was marvellous. My US colleague who accompanied me was just blown away (well, she told me before she was a Sound of Music fan and did see the film a couple of times). Great performance and performers. So highly recommended to anybody who is in Musicals or just the Sound of Music........

Book early, tickets sell out quickly.

Little gimmick on the side: Although the performance is in german, they have kind of Subtitles (or better toptitles) above the stage in english so even foreign visitors can follow the dialogues.

I saw a production of "The Song of Music" here, which is performed periodically here (note: good performance, but it is all in German with no subtitles offered, but if you are familiar with the film, you will be able to follow and hum along with the songs). The theater itself offers comfortable seating, with an elegant interior. Beware that the restroom facilities do not have the capability of handling the intermission crowd, so the lines are long and you will likely miss some of the second act. Across the street is a pedestrian bridge connecting to old-town Salzburg so it is convenient to hotels, attractions and transportation.

We attended the New Year's Day Concert this year by the Salzburg Orchestra which consisted of 18 musicians. The theatre is relatively small, well-appointed and provides an excellent view of the stage. The concert was a delight with an enthusiastic conductor who regaled the audience with obviously very amusing anecdotes before each musical item. Despite the fact that we could not speak German we were caught up in the warmth of the occasion. It was a thoroughly delightful experience. The theatre is close to the Sacher Hotel and within walking distance over the pedestrian bridge from the Old Town.

This is a lovely theatre and the production of Mozart'sMagic Flute that we saw in December 2014 was first class with great singing and imaginative staging. with top price tickets costing only 60 Euros and others at half that, it was far better value than many British or European operas.
I had tried to book online but had problems and so emailed them. Had a very quick response, in English, and arranged card payment, picking up tickets from box office on day of performance. Most of the audience seemed to be local music lovers rather than tourists, which added to the experience.
It was the highlight of our trip , so do check out their programme if you are visiting Salzburg.

This is a very nice old building. I’m assuming it predates the communist era but don’t know for sure. I saw it on a walking and thought it was pretty nice.

In the city of Salzburg, the “Salzburg State Theatre” can be seen as the leading and most influential institution for the performing arts in the City. The theatre is the home to opera, theatre, dance and the theatre for young audiences »Junges Land«, four vivacious and distinguished companies together under one roof, together good for about 400 performances each season from September to June.
The main theatre building is located next to the Mirabell Gardens and seats an audience of 707. A total of 25 new productions are presented at the State Theatre each season. Alongside modern and contemporary productions, classic productions in all sectors are staged. 340 persons from 35 different countries work at the State Theatre.

We were visiting Salzburg for a few days and booked to see The Sound of Music on 21 March 2018.
The production was well staged and the sets worked well with a rotating stage. The performances of the leads were strong.
The show was in German with English subtitles provided above the stage. Naturally these were quite high up and we had booked tickets in the retrospect I would have been better in the circle if I wanted to watch the sub titles as well as the performances as it would have been a better angle I think. (We knew the story well though so not a major problem).
It was odd hearing the songs that we know so well in German and I really enjoyed that in the encore the cast then performed the main songs again in English.
The theatre itself was nice but the additional facilities were quite limited - there were few toilets which got busy and a minimal bar. I was also told I couldn’t take my coat with me into the seating area and I had to use the cloakroom but there was also a charge for the cloakroom when I could have comfortably sat by my feet. The seating layout was also not great for my seat (row 9 seat 2) at the seat in front was line with the centre of the stage and so the person blocked the sight line to the main performances (seat 1 was better as it had more of an angle to the stage).

A comfortable theatre virtually opposite Mozart-Wohnhaus. I'm told Mozart performed there.

I saw Spamalot and The Iliad (in German). Both were excellent and I recommend you see them.

"Only look on the bright side of life" is better sung in English! :)

We bought tickets (on the day) to attend the opening night of Carmen. It was a modern interpretation of the classic. The music was in it's original format and so we were able to enjoy the whole production although both of us would have preferred the whole thing to remain as Bizet intended. Performers, particularly the orchestra and the children were a delight. The theatre itself is worth a visit on its own. If we had the time we would have done the tour.
